Abstract
An existing roof may be fitted with insulation cladding panels (4) using a clamping member (10), having a hook (14), an attachment plate and a clamping plate (16). The hook is secured under an edge (8) of a roofing panel (1) and a first cladding panel is placed on the roof adjacent the clamping member, supporting it in position. A second cladding panel is then positioned adjacent the first and is attached to the clamping member. The clamping member is tightened so that the cladding panel and said roofing panel are clamped together between the hook and the clamping plate. For additional security the cladding panels may be secured to the roofing panels using adhesive.
Description
ROOF CLADDING
The present invention relates to the application of cladding to a roof of a building and more particularly, but not exclusively, to the application of insulation cladding to an existing asbestos roof.
There are three ways in which an existing roof with asbestos roof can be treated to ensure its safety. First, the whole roofing assembly may be stripped and replaced. This is costly and under current legislation it is necessary to employ a licensed contractor. Alternatively, the upper surface of the roof may be scrubbed cleaned and then sealed. This process is again relatively expensive as used cleaning fluid must be disposed at a licensed waste dump. Moreover, the cleaned surface of the roof has to be sealed using, for example, a spray-on plastics composition. The third option is to cover the roof with metal roofing panels or insulation panels and will soon become outlawed as it entails drilling through the existing asbestos roof before the panels are attached.
It is an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate the aforesaid disadvantages.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of attaching a cladding panel to a roof of a building using a clamping member, comprising the steps of securing the clamping member under an edge of a roofing panel, positioning a cladding panel on the roofing panel, attaching a cladding panel to the clamping member, and tightening the clamping member so that the cladding panel and said roofing panel are clamped together.
The clamping member may comprise a first portion for engagement with the edge of the roofing panel and a clamping plate for engagement with an edge of the cladding panel.
Preferably, a first cladding panel is placed on the roof to one side of the clamping member so as to support it in position and a second cladding panel is placed on the other side of the clamping member and is attached thereto.
The clamping member may have a fastener that is connected to the clamping plate is used to tighten the clamping plate on to the cladding panel.
Preferably the clamping plate overlies the adjacent cladding panels so as to clamp them to the roofing panels.
The cladding panels may first be glued to the roofing panels.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a roofing assembly comprising a roofing panel and an overlying cladding panel, the cladding panel being secured to an edge of the roofing panel by means of a clamping member, the clamping member being secured under the edge of the roofing panel and over and edge of the cladding panel so as to clamp the cladding panel to the roofing panel.
There may be a plurality of overlapping roofing panels with the clamping member being located under an edge of one of the roofing panels in the region of overlap, and adjacent cladding panels between which the clamping member is disposed.
The main portion preferably abuts an edge of one cladding panels and engages with the adjacent cladding panel. It may also have a plate by which it engages with the cladding panel.
The clamping member preferably further comprises a fastener by which the clamping plate may be tightened on to the cladding panel
A specific embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is sectioned side view of a roof assembly fitted with cladding in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a side view of a clamping member of the present invention;
Figure 3 is a rear view of the clamping member of figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a plan view of the clamping member of figure 2.
Referring now to figure 1 the drawings, there is shown a section of a roofing assembly having cladding fitted in accordance with the present invention. The cladding is fitted to an existing asbestos cement roof to provide both protection from the harmful effects of asbestos and thermal insulation.
The existing roof comprises adjacent overlapping asbestos roofing panels 1 of undulating configuration fitted to a purlin 2 with a hook bolt 3 as is well known. The insulation cladding panels 4 are typically composed of high density polyethylene and have a planar upper surface 5 and an underside 6 that is complementary to the profile of the roofing panel 1. Two such cladding panels 4 are shown adjacent to one another in figure 1 with their upper surfaces 5 contiguous. The abutting edges 7 of the insulation panels 4 are disposed directly above an edge 8 of the upper of the overlapping roof panels 1. In order to secure the insulation panels 4 to the roof panels 1 clamping members 10 are fitted at spaced intervals between the abutting edges 7 of the insulation panels 4.
Each clamping member 10, shown in detail in figures 2 to 4, comprises a clip 11 formed from a single bent plate of metal. The clip 11 has a main vertical wall 12 that is bent at one end at a right angle to form a horizontal connecting plate 13 and at the other end through more than 90 to form a terminal hook 14. The horizontal plate 13 has an aperture that, in use, receives a self-tapping screw 15 that carries a clamping plate 16 disposed parallel to the horizontal plate 13.
Referring back to figure 1, the cladding is assembled on to the existing roof in the following procedure. First, each clip 11 is first located on the existing roof by hooking the terminal hook 14 under the uppermost edge 8 of the overlapping roof panels 1. A first insulation panel 4 (the one on the left shown in figure 1) is then positioned in place such that its vertical edge 7 abuts the vertical wall 12 of each clip 11 so as to provide support during assembly of the cladding. The adjacent insulation panel 4 is then placed in position such that the clip 11 (and screw) is received in a vertical slot 17 in the panel 4. The clamping plate 16 is then rotated through 90 to the position shown in figure 1 where it bridges the slot 17 and overlies the upper surfaces 5 of the two adjacent panels 4. Finally, the screw 15 is tightened so that the insulation panels 4 are clamped between the clamping plate 16 and the roof panels 1.
The upper planar surface of the cladding panels may be painted with a protective rubber membrane coating.
In order to provide extra resistance against lifting wind-load beads of adhesive may be placed on top of the roof panels before positioning of the insulation panels to ensure that they are secured to the roof panels.
The invention allows an asbestos roof to be sealed easily without the need for removal and without having to treat the asbestos directly.
It will be appreciated that numerous modifications to the above described design may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims. For example, the roofing panels may be of any particular
configuration and material and may be covered with any type of cladding using the
same method and apparatus. Moreover for added security the clamping members may
be held down by straps that pass across the roof. The straps may pass through slots in
the clamping plate and looped around the last plate in a row.
