Charging. - The method of the parent Specification is used for providing a compressed charge in the boxes or containers by which the charge is separately fed to the oven. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1 the bunkers a are formed with a discharge orifice c of approximately the same dimensions as the horizontal cross section of the charging-box b, so that the coal during its free fall will acquire sufficient velocity to form a compact mass in the box. Alternatively the ordinary small discharge orifices may be retained, and an intermediate container provided having a controlled orifice corresponding with the cross section of the box. The velocity of the falling charge may be increased by the use of mechanical projectors.
