Abstract

A step-frame, for use in the erection of a demountable scaffolding tower comprises a pair of generally vertical tubular side-pole (2) connected together by cross-pieces. The upper end of each of the side-poles is provided with a preformed plastics spigot member having a lower portion (1) frictionally or adhesively retained in the side pole (2) and an upper portion. for releasably engaging in the lower part of a side pole (4) of another step frame. The upper portion preferably comprises a tapered upper end part (5) and an annular depression (6) for engagement by a locking means. An annular recess (8) assists separation of the upper pole (4) from the spigot. <IMAGE>

Description

SCAFFOLDING TOWERS This invention is concerned with improvements in and relating to scaffolding towers for use, for example, in the construction industry.
Demountable scaffolding towers of the sort of which the present invention is concerned are, basically.
constructed from so-called "step frames" or "span frames". each comprising a pair of vertical tubular side poles connected to each other by appropriate cross-pieces and/or braces. During the course of erection of a scaffolding tower from such step frames an upper frame is detachably connected to a lower frame by engagement, in the lower open parts of the side poles of the upper frame. of spigot portions arranged at the upper ends of the side poles of the lower frame. Such spigot portions have been formed by narrowing down the upper portions of the side poles themselves but this arrangement suffers from disadvantages. Thus whilst, in theory, a pair of frames to be separated should be pulled apart along a line parallel to the side poles. in practice, on a construction site, this is often not the case so that the frames and poles are subjected to unfair and possibly distorting stresses. It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved form of spigot for connecting upper and lower step frames in a scaffolding tower assembly.
Accordingly, one embodiment of the present invention provides a step-frame, for use in the erection of a demountable scaffolding tower, comprising a pair of generally vertical tubular side-poles connected together by cross-pieces, in which the upper end of each of the side-poles is provided with a preformed spigot member formed of a plastics material having a lower portion engaging in the upper part of the side-pole and an upper portion. for releasably engaging in the lower part of a side-pole of another step frame. the upper portion preferably comprising a tapered upper end part tapering towards the top of the spigot and preferably having an annular depression formed in a generally cylindrical part of the upper portion below the tapered part.
In order that the invention may be well understood reference will now be made to the accompanying drawing which is a sect ion through a spigot. and used in accordance with the invention. in position and connecting the side poles of a pair of step frames.
As shown in the drawing a spigot for use in accordance with the invention comprises a hollow generally cylindrical body, conveniently formed of a unitary moulding of a plastics material such as a polyamide. A lower portion 1 of the body engages in the upper part of a tubular side-pole 2 of a step frame (which will generally be formed of a metal such as steel or, preferably. aluminium). An integral annular collar 3 surrounds the body member 1 with its lower rim engaging with the upper end of a side-pole and its upper rim engaging with the lower end of a side pole 4 of a step frame into which the upper portion of the spigot engages. The upper portion of the spigot comprises a tapered (frusto-conical) upper end part 5 below which there is an annular depression 6 and a pair of side-pole engaging annular parts 7 separated by a longitudinally extending annular recess 8.Tapered part 5 serves to facilitate location of the spigot in the lower part of an upper side-pole and annular recess 6 allows for the engagement of locking means which may be provided in the lower part of the side-pole 4. The cylindrical parts 7, separated by recess 8, reduce the area of the upper portion of the spigot in contact with the side-pole, thereby helping to reduce frictional resistance to insertion and removal of the spigot from that pole.
Insertion and removal of the spigot is further facilitated by the flexibility of the spigot which, however, is still sufficiently stiff to serve its primary purpose of securely holding the side frames together.
As will be appreciated, the lower portion 1 of the spigot should be relatively firmly fixed in lower side-pole 2 so that on separation of the two side-poles the spigot remains in lower side pole 2. To this end, the lower portion 1 may engage in lower side-pole 2 in a tight friction fit and/or may be bonded by means of an adhesive and/or may be otherwise secured thereto.

Claims (5)

1. A step-frame, for use in the erection of a demountable scaffolding tower, comprising a pair of generally vertical tubular side-poles connected together by cross-pieces in which the upper end of each of the side-poles is provided with a preformed spigot member formed of plastics material and having a lower portion engaging in the upper part of the side-pole and an upper portion. for releasably engaging in the lower part of a side-pole of another step frame.
2. a step frame as claimed in claim 1 in which the upper portion of the spigot comprises a tapered uppered end part tapering towards the top of the spigot and has an annular depression formed in a generally cylindrical part of the upper portion below the tapered part.
3. A step-frame as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 in which the spigot has, in its upper portion, a pair of side-pole engaging annular portions. below the annular depression, and separated by an annular recess in the upper portion of the spigot.
4. A step-frame as claimed in any one of the preceding claims in which the spigot has an annular collar between the upper and lower portions, the lower rim of the collar engaging with the upper end of the side-pole of the step frame.
5. A step-frame as claimed in claim 1 substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
