Abstract

A cover assembly for a drain pipe for liquid waste incorporates a non-return valve which controls the flow of liquid through a waste discharge opening connected to the drain pipe. The valve includes a valve element which is biassed into an upper closed position by means of a spring, which valve element is subject to an opening force by liquid waste collecting on it. When the force exerted by the liquid exceeds the spring biassing force the valve opens to allow liquid to drain into the pipe. <IMAGE>

Description

A DRAIN COVER ASSEMBLY This invention relates to a drain cover assembly and more particularly to such an assembly for a drain or other waste pipe or the like.
It is known to provide existing drains with apertured covers through which liquid waste can flow to a drain pipe which may be shared by numerous users, for example in multistorey apartments. The drain covers do not provide an effective barrier to entry of pests which find access through the drain pipe. A further difficulty is backs low of waste through the drain cover when the main pipe is choked.
It is an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate the aforesaid disadvantages.
According to the present invention there is provided a cover assembly for a drain or like pipe for liquid waste, comprising an apertured outer cover, a waste discharge opening below said cover and adapted to connect with said pipe, and a non-return valve controlling said opening such that waste can drain into said pipe but no return flow therefrom is permitted. The non-return valve also acts as an effective barrier to entry of pests via the waste pipe.
The invention will now be further described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 is a vertical section of one embodiment of cover assembly in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a section on line II-II in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a plan view from the top in Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings, a cover assembly generally indicated at 1 fits into the top of a drain pipe 2. The cover assembly has a hollow cylindrical body 3 with a square top flange 4 and a circular cover 5 with apertures 6. The cover 5 seats flush with the flange 4 on a step 7 at the upper end of the body 3. At one side of the flange 4 is an enclosed hinge pin 8 engaged by lugs 9 fixed to the underside of a support arm 10 of the cover 5.
Fixed within the cylindrical body 3 is an insert 11 comprising a cylindrical wall 12 crossed by a diametral rib 13 with an apertured central boss 14 above a circular aperture 15 defined by a radially inwardly projecting shelf 16 integral with the cylindrical body 12. The inner edge of the shelf 16 provides a sealing lip 17 for a circular valve element 18 mounted on a control stem 19 projecting through the boss 14 and terminating at its upper end in a washer 20 and adjusting nut 21 retaining the upper end of a compression spring 22 of which the lower end is received in the boss 14. The spring assembly is covered by a cap 23 which is a push-fit on the boss 14. The pressure of the spring 22 serves to lift the valve element 18 against its seat 17 thereby closing the opening 15. Adjustment of the nut 21 serves to control the pressure of the spring 22.
Liquid waste draining through the cover 5 will thus collect in the chamber above the valve element 18 until the pressure exerted thereon by the collected liquid overcomes the closing force of the spring 22 whereupon the valve element 18 moves downwardly to permit drainage through the opening 15.
The spring 22 will then restore the valve element 18 to its seated position.
It will be appreciated that the valve element 18 provides an effective barrier to entry of pests from the drain pipe 2 and at the same time avoids backs low of liquid from the pipe.

Claims (4)

1. A cover assembly for a drain or like pipe for liquid waste, comprising an apertured outer cover, a waste discharge opening below said cover and adapted to connect with said pipe, and a non-return valve controlling said opening such that waste can drain into said pipe but no return flow therefrom is permitted.
2. An assembly as claimed in claim 1, wherein the non-return valve comprises a valve element spring-biassed upwardly into a closed position in which it is subject to an opening force by liquid waste collecting thereabove, the valve element remaining closed until the opening force overcomes the spring biassing force.
3. An assembly as claimed in claim 2, wherein the spring biassing force is adjustable.
4. A cover assembly for a drain or like pipe for liquid waste, substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
