Abstract

The invention pertains to a single swing jaw-type crushing apparatus. Known apparatus suffer from the drawbacks of obstructing the feed opening of the crusher and rapidly wearing down the jaw plates of the crusher. The above problems are solved by providing an apparatus comprising a stationary jaw (33), a cantilevered swing jaw (35) driven by a toggle drive system (85), and a top feed opening (41) above the crushing chamber (37) formed between the two jaws. Two lateral hinge supports (49, 51) have a horizontal hinge axis (A) which lies in a plane generally bisecting the crushing chamber, so that the top feed opening extends behind hinge axis (A). A shock-absorbing back wall (143) is positioned behind hinge axis (A). The swing jaw (35) is fabricated in three sections, an upper hinge section (53), a lower jaw section (59), and an elongated joining member (61) attaching the upper hinge section (53) with the lower jaw section (59). Rock is fed into the crusher through the opening (41) and is then crushed between the stationary jaw (33) and the swing jaw (35).
