Abstract
Dish shaped tiles have inturned lips 7 on their edges to assist in bonding to a mortar. All edges are rounded. Groups of tiles are interconnected by frangible connectors 5 which also act as spacers. <IMAGE>
Description
" ARRANGEMENT FOR A SURFACE COATING
The present patent refers to an arrangement for a surface coating, by improving the surface structure and finish and also the surface resistance against a plurality of external agents.
The coating described hereinafter is approximately made for use in the coating of internal walls of swimming-pools,bathrooms, kitchens, butcher's shops, slaughterhou ses and meat stripping rooms, medical centers and other hospital facilities and generally any surfaces designed or exposed to remain in a restricted or lengthy contact with different types of liquids.
The characteristics of the arrangement being the object of this patent are firstly to ensure a practically perfect structure of the coated surfaces, the possibility of having the surface cleaned whenever is required1 and the assurance against any accidents caused by other types of coatings. How easy can it be applied, the difficulty of its casual stripping and the posibility of its adaptation to several geometrical configurations of the coated surfaces is also emphasized.
This arrangement essentially comprises a plurality of mutually identical members, each adopting the shape of a variable configured tile but preferably a regular or semi-regular geometrical shape will be adopted with peculiarly shaped peripheral ledges to ensure the positioning of the tile by means of a mortar layer previously applied to the surface to be coated.
The use of this arrangement for a coating to be disclosed hereinafter in the cases like the coating of swimming-pools will remove the frequent cases of injuries caused by the known mosaic fragments used so far,the vitreous nature and delicate structure of which on being broken originated the presence of cutting edges whereas in other cases, -the stripping of the mosaic pieces accounted for a reduction in the hygienic and aesthetic characteristics of the swimming-pool walls or the coated structural portion.
To make this disclosure clearer, some drawings are annexed to this description wherein only by way of illustrative and non-limitative example,an embodiment of this arrangement for a surface coating according to the principles of the claims has been shown.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 shows a coated surface by means of the disclosed arrangement with four of its components drawn in a continuously line whereas the remainder appears with fine dash-dotted lines, the illustrative shape pertaining to a preferred embodiment.
Figure 2 is a cross-section of a vertical plane shown Il-I I in the previous drawing of two components of the coating made up with the arrangement which is the object of the present Patent The members numerically referenced in the drawings pertain to the parts shown below.
The disclosed coating consists in the placing leaned to the wall -1- to be coated, of a plurality of members-2- showing some geometrical configured tile shape. This shape can be squared, rectangular, rhombic, triangular, hexagonal, rhomboidal or else with the single condition that as a member it is engageable with another one so that with their association is completed the coating of the required surface.
The case illustrated in the drawings, in a squared shape for members-2- suitable enough for the coating of swimming-pools and walls of any enclosures where hygienic activities, handling of food and similar are performed is taking the shape of a flattened box of small depth with respect to the edge length and this edge is showing throughout its periphery a rounded-3- whereas the apexes-4- are appearing also rounded.
Advantageously the members-2- can be manufactured in plastic material using the moulding and injection processes and can be exhibited as groups making up more sizeable tiles, for instance, in the order of 30 x 30 cm, all this accounting for a great number of members-2- for each of said groups. The different members -2- are originally engaged by means of some bridge-shaped rims -5- between the edges of the contiguous pieces, these rims being of relative strength and its breakage is allowed when specifically required if two or more members-2- shall be separated from the remainder of the members. Thus from a group or tile of the cited type set up with the association of multiple.members-2- , lower sized groups or tiles can be obtained and consequently a lower number of members in accordance with the characteristics of the coating to be made.
The side faces-6- of the members-2- which are completing the structure of the flatened box, a characteristic of said members, are showing at their edges some internal burrs -7- which will make easier the assembly and holding of the members-2-in the surface to be coated. With this purpose a mortar layer, for instance, white plaster, cement grout, size or equivalent material is arranged over the surface and the members-2- are then immediately incorporated, the access of the mortar parts inside the body of the flattened box is obtained and the latter box shaped by each of the members-2-, these mortar parts getting into with respect to the internal ledges-7- and a holding is being produced which positionally keeps the coating members. The coating remains really secured with a continuity assurance against the casual stripping of the members-2-.
The coating based on the disclosed arrangement in addition to be slight because of the properties of the plastic material used in the manufacture of the members-2- is also showing an excellent scratching and impact strength and to other external agents, high and low temperatures are perfectly withstood and due to the properties of the plastic material it can be manufactured in several colours, all that originating a remarkable aesthetic effect.
Claims (4)
1.- Arrangement for a surface coating, essentially characterized in that it is made up with an elementary box-shaped member defined by a regular geometrical shaped face and projected faces from the former, and exhibiting externally its rounded edges and apexes while the edges of the side faces internally are showing some burrs which help in the positioning of the component to the surface to be coated with prior application of a mortar layer on the latter.
2.- Arrangement for a surface coating according to claim l,characterized in that the disclosed and claimed component is shown in groups of multiple units, each of which is linked to adjacent sides of contiguous components by means of reduced strength,bridge-shaped rims, keeping up its relative position when performing the coating with the group of multiple units and optionally allowing the unit separation if required, according to the characteristics of the surfaces to be coated.
3. A tile so-shaped that in use it can c.ontain the material used for adhering it in its operative position and also provide a key for the material.
4. A tile substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
