Abstract

The leaf and litter collection tool comprises a tool handle 12, a head assembly 10 complete with a matrix of spikes 11 and a tool head cover 13 with holes to match the positions of the spikes, the head assembly and cover being releasably connected. Spring actuated version Between the tool head assembly and head cover is located a spring device which thrusts the two units apart, upon the release of a catch mechanism, causing the spikes to be fully retracted. The tool is engaged by pressing it to the ground until the head cover is locked into position by the catch mechanism and is then ready to be used to collect leaves and litter. Manually actuated version The tool is manually actuated using a mechanical lever/linkage device causing the spikes to protrude through the head cover upon tool engagement and retract upon disengagement. <IMAGE>

Description

LEAF AND LITTER COLLECTION TOOL This invention relates to a leaf and litter collection tool.
Fallen leaves and litter can be a constant problem in gardens, parks or other similar areas and can lead to considerable effort being frequently expended to clear them. The leaf and litter collection tool detailed herein is intended to provide a simple, light and cost effective device suitable for single-handed operation whilst enabling large areas to be cleared relatively quickly.
In addition to the main purpose of this device it is intended that it may also be used to aerate lawns, either specifically, or simultaneously when collecting leaves and litter.
According to the present invention there is provided a leaf and litter collection tool comprising three parts: the tool head complete with a matrix of spikes, the handle and the tool head cover; the cover being adapted to allow the spikes to protrude through its body when the tool is engaged and to act as a safety cover when it is not in use. The tool head and cover are releasably connected and adapted to enable disengagement by means of manual actuation, simple spring actuation against the static portion, or other suitable means.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows in perspective, the tool when engaged.
Figure 2 illustrates in section, the tool head assembly when engaged; and Figure 3 illustrates in section, the tool head assembly when disengaged.
OPTION 1 - SPRING ACTUATED HEAD COVER.
Referring to the drawings, the tool comprises a head assembly 10 complete with a matrix of spikes 11 connected to a handle 12, and to this a tool head cover 13 is releasably connected by, for example bolts, catches or similar means (not shown).
Between the head assembly and head cover is located a spring device (not shown) providing a means to thrust the two units apart causing the collected matter to be dropped. Engagement and disengagement of the tool will be achieved by a catch, or similar means (not shown).
In order to engage the tool it shall, typically, be pressed to the ground causing the spikes to protrude through the head cover, the spring device to compress and the catch to lock into position. Whilst the tool is engaged it is used to pick up leaves and litter.
In order to disengage the tool, the catch shall be caused to release by means of a button or similar means (not shown) acting upon it; The spring device being suitably sprung causes the head cover to be projected to a mechanical stop (not shown) at which point the spikes are fully retracted causing the collected matter to be dropped.
OPTION 2 - MANUALLY ACTUATED HEAD Referring to the drawings, the tool comprises a head assembly 10 complete with a matrix of spikes 11 connected to a handle 12, and to this a tool head cover 13 with a mechanical lever / linkage device (not shown) is releasably connected by, for example bolts, catches or similar means (not shown).
Engagement and disengagement of the tool will be achieved by the operation of the mechanical lever / linkage device.
In order to engage the tool, the head cover lever / linkage device shall be operated so that the spikes protrude through the head cover and a pin, catch or other similar means (not shown), used to lock the head assembly in this position.
Whilst the tool is engaged it is used to pick up leaves and litter.
In order to disengage the tool, the catchment device shall be released and the head cover lever / linkage device operated to retract the spikes causing the collected matter to be dropped.

Claims (6)

1 A leaf and litter collection tool comprising three parts: the tool head complete with a matrix of spikes, the handle and the tool head cover; the cover being adapted to allow the spikes to protrude through its body when the tool is engaged and to act as a safety cover when it is not in use. The tool head and cover are releasably connected and adapted to enable disengagement by means of manual actuation, simple spring actuation against the static portion, or other suitable means.
2 A leaf and litter collection tool as claimed in Claim 1 wherein a sprung movement is provided to thrust the head cover from the tool head upon disengagement of the catch.
3 A leaf and litter collection tool as claimed in Claims 1 & 2 wherein catchment means is provided to arrest the movement of the head cover whilst the tool is in the engaged position.
4 A leaf and litter collection tool as claimed in Claim 1 wherein manual means of actuation is provided to enable engagement and disengagement of the tool.
5 A leaf and litter collection tool as claimed in Claims 1,2,3 & 4 wherein the head cover acts as a safety cover when the tool is not in use, to protect against personal injury from the spikes and also to protect the spikes against accidental damage.
6 A leaf and litter collection tool as described herein with reference to figures 1-3 of the accompanying drawings.
