Description

TITLE Golf Training Aid The invention relates to a golf training aid.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a simple means enabling the user to keep his or her head bent down over a ball during the swing of a golf club and thereby avoid any involuntary upward movement with consequent loss of concentration. A verbal instruction to keep one S head down is not always easy to follow in practice when the head is allowed unrestricted movement and there is no guide line to help the golfer achieve the necessary instruction throughout the effective movement of a golf swing.
According to the invention there is provided a golf training aid comprising a rigid rod or tube, means for securing one end of the rod or tube to the head or headgear of a user so that it extends in a substantially horizontal direction away from the front of the user, and means for securing a string or cord to the other end of the rod or tube, the string or cord being attached to a ball or other article adapted when in use to be struck by a golf club when the ball or other article is resting on the ground and the head of the user is bent down at a certain distance above the ball or other article.
Since with this invention the head of the user is connected to the ball or other article the head will more readily stay down and so avoid an involuntary upward movement. This follows because the user is positively concentrating on not moving the ball or other article.
Preferably the length of the string or cord is made adjustable and preferably the length of the rod or tube is adjustable, for instance the said rod or tube may take the form of a telescopic tube. The said rod or tube may be made of a plastics material and suitably the ball or other article may be made of a plastics material.
In one advantageous form of the invention the end of the rod or tube is secured to a skull cap to be fitted over the head of the user, and in another advantageous form the rod or tube is secured to a head band provided with a visor, preferably the head band is provided with rneans for adjusting the size of the head to suit the wearer.
By way of example only preferred forms of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, wherein Figure 1 shows a golf training aid in use, Figure 2 shows in perspective a similar device to that of Figure 1 employing a visor with a head band instead of a skull cap, Figure 3 shows one means for varying the size of the head band.shown in Figure 2 to suit the wearer, and Figure 4 shows another means for ensuring a tight fit for the head band shown in Figure 2.
There is shown a tube 2 of light plastics material extending in a substantially horizontal direction away from the front of the user. The tube 2 is part of a telescopic assembly of tubes arranged to form a skull cap 1. A cord 4 hanging vertically downwards is fixed to the tube 2 at 3 and a light plastics ball 5 is fixed to the end of the cord 4. The drawing shows a user 7 in an appropriate position to strike the ball 5 with a golf club 6. The cord 4 may be provided with about one inch of slackness. The purpose of the inch of slackness is to allow for some slight rotation of the head of the user 7 during the back swing during which some of the slackness will be taken up but not enough to move the ball 5 or lift it off the ground.
Figure 2 shows a modified form of device similar to that of Figure 1 but employing a visor 19 with a head band 11 instead of skull cap 1. A telescopic tube 12 is shown which is fixed to the head band 11 at 16. A cord 14 is fixed to the tube 12 at 13 and a light plastics ball 15 is fixed to the end of the cord 14. To ensure a suitable tight fit of the head band 11 to suit the wearer, the means of Figure 2a or Figure 2b may be adopted. Figure 2a shows an adjustable strap 17 and Figure 2b shows an elastic strap 18.
