Abstract

A software remote controller and security device consists of 1) a battery-operated remote-control handset (Fig 1) with its relevant circuitry, sending an infra-red/ultrasonic/radio signal to 2) a remote-control receiver and signal processor (Fig 2) connected to RS232 communication port of a micro-computer to control the flow of programmes. <IMAGE>

Description

SOFTWARE REMOTE CONTROLLER AND SECURITY DEVICE A method of controlling the operation of software running on a micro-computer by means of a remote control handset linked by infra-red, ultrasonics or radio signal to a device plugged into that micro-computers standard RS-232C serial interface.
Figure 1 - Shows a battery remote-control handset emitting in this example infra-red signals giving a unique function or identity to each key that is pressed.
Figure 2 - Shows the receiving device, the function of which is to convert the received information to an 8-bit parallel data word which is then recoded into serial form for transmisssion to the computer conforming to the EIA RS-232C standard for serial data transmission.
Two separate control handsets may be in use at the same time although not simultaneously.

Claims (8)

1) Software remote controller and security device means a remote control numeric keypad.
2) as claim (1) wherein devices used for remote control data entries.
3) as claim (2) wherein device is used for security control and password entries.
4) as claim (3,2) wherein device is used for operation control of software packages i.e. (cursor key, function key and mouse).
Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows 1) Software remote controller and security device means a remote control numeric keypad.
2) As claim (1) wherein device is used for remote control data entries.
3) As claim (2) wherein device is used for security control and password entries.
4) As claim (3/2) wherein device is used for operation control of software packages i.e cursor key, function key and mouse.
5) As claim (2) wherein each key on the remote keypad can be assigned to generate a particular code or a series of successive codes for a single keypress by means of translational software which stays memory resident in the host computer and which enables the use of the remote keypad or the standard computer keyboard at will.
6) As claim (3) wherein in addition to only the data being sent from the remote keypad a code is added to enable only a unique remote keypad to be recognised by a particular receiver/processor for security purposes.
7) As claim (4) wherein remote handset contains a device to indicate a required cursor movement direction, dependant upon the angle at which the remote handset itself is to the horizontal in one of four only directions. This indicated direction is then coded into one of four codes and is transmitted when a particular key is pressed on the handset.
8) As claim (2) wherein remote handset maybe connected to other data input devices i.e Bar code readers in order to make those devices also remotely operable
