Abstract

A radome with high temperature properties for a projectile comprises a synthetic material core (1) and an inner and an outer thin-walled covering layer (2, 3). The core (1) is made of polyimide needle felt and the layers (2, 3) of the thermosetting or thermoplastic matrix or polymer materials unaffected by high temperature, the core (1) and the layers (2, 3) being firmly connected together without a heterogeneous adhesive substance. <IMAGE>

Description

RADOME The present invention relates to a radome for a Projectile.
Known radomes may have, for example, a core of syntactic material.
In that case it is disadvantageous that the core material is susceptible to tearing under high temperature stresses, since the core material, in consequence of a relatively high thermal coefficient of expansion, has a poor shear strength relative to its covering layers.
There is therefore a need for a radome, the mechanical, thermal and dielectric properties of which are suitable for a durable high temperature use, for example up to 3200C.
According to the present invention there is provided a radome for a Drojectile comDrising a core of polyimide needle felt and inner and outer thin-wall covering layers of high-temperature-resistant thermosetting or thermoplastic matrix or polymer material, the core and the layers being firmly connected together without use of a heterogeneous adhesive material.
A radome embodying the invention may have the advantage that gluing of the covering layers to the core is redundant. The core of polyimide needle felt can be so compacted by means of temperature and pressure that a spherically deformed material of high stiffness and low weight with good dielectric properties results. It is also of advantage that directionally dependent mechanical properties, for example hardness, elasticity and strength, as well as a low dielectric constant 8, a low loss angleS and a high stiffness, can be achieved with a core material of polyimide needle felt.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be more particularly described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, the single figure of which is a sectional view of part of a radome embodying the invention.
Referring now to the drawing, there is shown part of a radome which is constructed as a hybrid radome and which has a core 1 of polyimide needle felt as well as an inner covering layer 2 and an outer covering layer 3 of thermosetting or thermoplastic matrix or polymer materials, which can be fibre-reinforced. The fibre reinforcement can consist of endless fibres. The layers 2 and 3, which are firmly connected with the core of polyimide needle felt by a temperature-pressure process without an unlike or heterogeneous adhesive substance, can consist of thermosetting polyimide matrix material, for example on the basis of a maleimide resin, or of thermoplastic Dolyimide matrix material, or bismaleimide resins or aromatic polyimides can be used. The matrix material is preferably fibre-reinforced.

Claims (9)

1. A radome for a projectile comprising a core of polyimide needle felt and inner and outer thin-wall covering layers of high-temperature resistant thermosetting or thermoplastic matrix or polymer material, the core and the layers being firmly connected together without use of a heterogeneous adhesive material.
2. A radome as claimed in claim 1, wherein the material of the layers is a thermosetting polyimide matrix material.
3. Aradome as claimed in claim 3, wherein the matrix material is based on maleimide resin.
4. A radome as claimed in claim 1, wherein the material of the layers is a thermoplastic polyimide matrix material.
5. A radome as claimed in claim 1, wherein the material of the layers is a fibre-reinforced thermosetting or thermoplastic matrix or polymer material, a fibre-reinforced thermosetting polyimide matrix material, or a fibre-reinforced thermoplastic polyimide matrix material.
6. A radome as claimed in either claim 2 or claim 5, wherein the matrix material is bismaleimide resin or aromatic polyimide.
7. A radome as claimed in claim 1, wherein the material of the layers is polybenzimidazole polymer.
8. A radome as claimed in claim 5, wherein the fibre reinforcement comprises endless fibres.
9. A radome as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the core and the covering layers are connected together by a temperaturepressure process.
