Description
Glazing Securement Arrangements
This invention relates to glazing securement arrangements, and more particularly, to securement arrangements for providing glazed panels or windows within walls of partitioning of the kind used for space dividing purposes within buildings such as in business offices.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a convenient securement arrangement for disposing and assembling glazed windows or panels within such partitioning-type structures capable of rapid assembly and disassembly, and also of enabling glazing of different types and different locations within the provided opening therefor.
In accordance with one aspect of the invention, there is provided a securement arrangement for glazing to be disposed within an opening in a partitioning-type structure, comprising an elongate partitioning panel support disposed around the opening, and having side walls directed inwardly of the opening so as to define a channel along the support; an elongate glazing chair adapted for engagement within the inwardly directed side walls of the elongate support and having at least one elongate glazing seat facing inwardly of the opening for the receipt of a glazed panel; an elongate recess located within the glazing chair outwardly of the or each glazing seat with respect to the opening; and an elongate retaining clip a first portion of which is adapted for insertion into the recess, and a second portion of which is adapted to lie alongside the edge of the glazed panel, the clip being pivotable between two positions in the first of which the first portion is unrestrained within the recess and free to be removed therefrom, and the second portion lies adjacent the glazed panel and in the second of which, the second portion is separated from the glazing panel and a resilient glazed gasket is disposed therebetween, and the first portion engages with mating parts within the recess to hold the clip in position and, via the glazing gasket, the glazed panel in secure location upon the glazing chair within the opening.
In accordance with another aspect of the invention, there is provided a method of securing glazing within an opening in a partitioning-type structure, surrounded by an elongate partioning panel support having side walls directed inwardly of the opening so as to define a channel along the support and having an elongate glazing chair arranged within the inwardly direct side walls of the elongate support and carrying at least one elongate glazing seat facing inwardly of the opening, comprising the steps of disposing a glazed panel on the glazing seat; facing up a first portion of a retaining glazing clip to an elongate recess located within the glazing chair outwardly of the glazing seat with respect to the opening, the retaining clip having a second portion lying alongside the edge of the glazed panel within the glazing opening; inserting the first portion of the retaining clip into the recess such that the clip is in a first position with the first portion within the recess and free to be removed therefrom and the second portion lying closed adjacent the glazed panel; turning the glazing clip to a second position at which the second portion is separated from the glazed panel and the first portion engages with mating parts within the recess to hold the clip in position; and inserting a resilient glazing gasket between the second portion of the clip and the glazed panel whereby the glazed panel is held by the clip via the glazing gasket in secure location upon the glazing chair within the glazing opening.
The recess within the glazing chair may be located immediately outwardly the glazing seat, and may be inclined to the normal with respect to the axis of the glazed panel. The clip may have the cross-sectional form of two arms joined generally at right angles, the arms comprising the first and second portions of the clip.
Where the recess is inclined the first portion of the clip may be inserted at an inclined angle into the recess so that the outer edge of the second portion lies loosely against the glazed panel, whereafter, on insertion of the glazing gasket between the second portion of the clip and the glazed panel, the clips turns to its second position where the second portion may lie, at its outer periphery, in line with the outer periphery of the appropriate inwardly extending wall of the elongate supports.
The first portion of the clip may be provided on its inner surface with a shoulder adapted to engage a corresponding shoulder within the recess upon the clip being turned, about the mid-point of its "L" section, to its second position on insertion of the elongate glazing gasket.
It is to be appreciated that the glazing seat may be disposed at any convenient position across the glazing chair, and can thus be located adjacent one side or the other of the opening within the partitioning.
Alternatively, glazing seats may be disposed one adjacent each side of the partitioning, so that a double-glazing system of glazed panels can be fitted within the glazing opening. Each of these various dispositions can be achieved by the simple insertion of an appropriately configured glazing chair within the support around the glazing opening.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood, embodiments thereof will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows a section through one side of one form of glazing securement arrangement according to the invention partially assembled;
Figure 2 shows the securement arrangement of Figure 1 fully assembled;
Figure 3 shows the glazing clip used in the arrangement of Figures 1 and 2; and
Figure 4 shows an alternate form of glazing chair to that used in the arrangement of Figures 1 and 2.
Referring to Figure 1, it will be seen that the glazing securement arrangement for use within a glazing opening in internal office partitioning comprises an extruded light alloy elongate support member 1 which in use is adapted to be disposed on the two sides and above and below a glazing opening. The support member is channel shaped on both sides, on one side supporting and secured to partitioning panelling 2. On the other side, facing into the glazing opening, the side walls 3, 4 of the channel-shaped support member 1 in turn support an elongate extruded light alloy glazing chair 5 extending around the glazing opening. As can be seen, the chair 5 is provided with outwardly extending feet 6, 7 which securely and closely engage with the inner side walls of the support member 1.
To one side, the glazing chair is shouldered outwardly from the glazing opening and is provided with a glazing seat 8 upon which is located the edge 9 of a glazed panel 10 adapted to fit within the glazing opening.
As can be seen, the glazed panel rests against a first gasket 11 of resilient material held in a recess 12 from the side wall 13 of the seat 8.
Beneath the glazing seat 8, the glazing chair 5 is provided with an inclined recess 14 having an internal shoulder 15 on its inward wall 16. An elongate extruded light alloy glazing clip 17 of generally "L" shaped section is provided for securing the panel 10. This is provided with a first portion or arm 18 and a second portion 19. As can be seen in Figure 1, the first portion 18 is inserted into the recess 14 until the edge 20 of the second portion 19 lies against the glazed panel 10.The clip 17 may now be turned about its mid-point towards the position shown in Figure 2 whereupon a second glazing gasket 21 is pushed into the gap between the second portion 19 of the clip 17 and the glazed panel 10 so as to locate the panel securely in position and dispose the clip such that the outer wall 22 of the second portion is in line with the outer wall 23 of the support member and the partitioning panelling 24. When turned into this disposition it is to be noted that shoulders 25, 15 of the first portion of the clip and the recess respectively engage so as to prevent the clip 11 being pulled from the recess.
As will be appreciated, the glazing chair, with its very simple and positive location within the support struts, is nonetheless readily removable, and may be replaced by alternate glazing chairs for location of the glazing panel on the opposite side of the partitioning, for example. Alternatively, as is shown in Figure 4, a glazing chair 27 may be provided of such a shape and configuration as to be adapted to accommodate glazing panels one on each side so as to provide for doubleglazing in the glazing opening. With the chair of Figure 4, as will be apparent, appropriate glazing gaskets, glazing panels, and glazing clips (not shown) can be accommodated each side of the chair.
By means of the invention we have provided a securement arrangement for partitioning glazing of flexible adaptability and a simple form readily suitable for rapid installation and removal whilst being securely and firmly locatable in the partitioning wall.
