Abstract

A fin fitted into a fin box in a Windsurf board provides steering. An emergency folding fin fitted permanently into a board or carried as a replacement fin can be operated when fin breakage occurs and steering of the board is lost. An emergency folding fin has a chassis 1 and pivoted arm 2 which can be unlocked unfolded and locked open. Fixed to and folded between the chassis and the pivoted arm is flexible material 3 which is stretched tight when the pivoted arm is locked open. The chassis is provided with an external keyed surface for permanent fitting into a Windsurf board and is provided with guide and catchment means for fitting into a fin box when used as a replacement fin. <IMAGE>

Description

EMERGENCY FOLDING FIN This invention relates to-an emergency folding fin for Windsurfing.
Boards used in Windsurfing are fitted with a fin in a fin box to provide steering. When breakage of this fin occurs steering of the board is lost.
According to the present invention there is provided an emergency folding fin comprising a chassis from which an arm on a pivot is unlocked unfolded and locked open. Fixed to and folded between the chassis and the pivoted arm is flexible material which is stretched tight when the pivoted arm is in the locked open position.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows an oblique projection of the emergency folding fin unfolded and in the locked open position.
Figure 2 shows an oblique projection of the emergency folding fin in the closed position.
Figure 3 shows the emergency folding fin in the locked open position revealing hidden details.
Referring to the drawings the emergency folding fin comprises a chassis 1 from which a pivoted arm 2 is unlocked unfolded and locked open by means of locking mechanisms. Fixed to and folded between the chassis and the pivoted arm is flexible material 3.
The chassis is keyed 4 externally to provide a surface by which it is fitted permanently into a Windsurf board and has guide and catchment means 5 by which it is fitted into a fin box.
To open the emergency folding fin release the pivoted arm from therear end locking mechanism (not shown) and unfold the fin until the front end locking mechanism 6 operates whereupon the flexible material fixed to and folded between the chassis and the pivoted arm is stretched tight.
To close the emergency folding fin release the front end locking mechanism and fold until the flexible material is folded within the chassis and the rear end locking mechanism operates.

Claims (4)

1 An emergency folding fin for Windsurfing comprising a chassis from which an arm on a pivot is unlocked unfolded and locked open. Fixed to and folded between the chassis and the pivoted arm is flexible material which is stretched tight when the pivoted arm is in the locked open position.
2 --An-energency folding fin for Windsurfing as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the chassis is keyed externally to provide a surface for permanent fitting into a Windsurf board.
3 An emergency folding fin for Windsurfing as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the chassis is provided with guide and catchment means for fitting into a fin box.
4 An emergency folding fin substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1 - 3 of the accompanying drawings.
