Description
Title: System for fishing
Description of Invention
This invention relates to a system for fishing particularly to assist fishermen in the correct selection of fishing lures.
Fly fishermen, when in competition, are required to record the kinds of fishing lures which they use. Whilst the range of lures available is very broad, the number of lures which are likely to be used on any one fishing occasion are relatively small. The present invention provides a system which aids the fisherman by conveniently identifying the lures which may, for example, be selected from a large number of available lures, for use on any given fishing occasion.
Moreover, a fisherman not in competition may wish to record, for his own interest, data concerning the kinds of fishing lures used on a particular occasion.
According to a first aspect of the invention I provide a system for fishing comprising, in combination, a container for containing different kinds of fishing lure means, and a reference means, the container having retaining means for releasably retaining the lure means, and the reference means displaying representations of the various kinds of lure means which, in use, are to be contained in the container, the representations each having a unique marking corresponding to a marking of one of the retaining means which retains the lure means shown by the respective representation.
According to a second aspect of the invention I provide a system for fishing comprising, in combination, a container for containing different kinds of lure means and a reference means, the container having retaining means for releasably retaining the lure means in an orderly arrangement, and the reference means displaying in an orderly manner, representations of the various kinds of lure means which, in use, are to be contained in the container, the ordering of the representations displayed by the reference means, in use, being related to the ordering of the lure means in the container.
In each case, the fisherman may select a small number of fishing lures which he will wish to use on a particular occasion and put them into the container. The reference means may then be used to identify the particular lures chosen.
According to a third aspect of the invention I provide a container for containing fishing lure means the lure means being releasably retoined, in an orderly fashion, in the container by a retaining means which comprises a bed of resilient material which has provided therein a plurality of slits into each of which a hook portion of a lure means may be inserted, the slits being of narrower width than the widths of the hook portions, so that the hooks are releasably gripped by sides defining the slits, there being a marking adjacent each slit to uniquely identify that slit.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:
FIGURE I is a perspective view of a container for fishing lures of a system in accordance with the invention and an enlarged broken away portion which illustrates hidden features thereof,
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of a reference means for use in a system in accordance with the invention,
FIGURE 3 is perspective view of a master container for use in a system in accordance with the invention.
Referring to the drawings a container I comprises a rigid box made of, for examples, metal or plastics, having a base 2 and a lid 3.
The base 2 and lid 3 each house a retaining means 4 which comprises a bed 5 of resilient material, and an overlying plate 6.
The resilient bed 5 preferably comprises a pad of suitable foam rubber but alternatively it may comprise a soft plastics material or a combination of materials.
The resilient bed 5 provides a plurality of slits 7 therein into each of which a hook portion of a fishing lure 8 releasably may be inserted, the slits 7 being of narrower width than the width of the hook portions such that the hook portions are gripped by sides defining the slits 7.
In this way the lures 8 are each releasably retained in the container I in an orderly arrangement.
The overlying plate 6 has provided therein apertures 9 which overlie the slits 7 provided in the bed 5.
A plurality of markings 10 are also provided, one unique marking being provided adjacent each slit 7 to identify each slit 7 by the given marking 10.
In the embodiment shown in Figure I the markings 10 comprise numbers but it will be appreciated that letters of the alphabet, Greek characters or any other suitable markings may be used instead, or even just a colour code marking uniquely to identify each slit.
The container I is preferably of such dimension as to fit conveniently into a pocket of a garment or into a small bag.
In the embodiment shown in Figure I the beds 5 of the lid 3, and base 2 are both subdivided into different sections so that a plurality of different kinds of lure means 8 of the same type, i.e. lures, nymphs, dry flies or wet flies, can be contained in each of the sections. Any alternative arrangement could be provided for retaining the lure means 8 in an orderly fashion.
If desired, the retaining means 4 may be made removable from and replaceable in the base 2 and/or lid 3 to permit of using different retaining means 4 which each provides different numbers of slits 7 and apertures 9 within a single container I depending on the number of lures required for a particular fishing occasion.
Figure 2 shows an embodiment of a reference means II which comprises a plurality of sheets of material 12 contained in a booklet or loose leaf file 13.
Each sheet 12 presents a plurality of areas 14, in each of which a representation 15 of a kind of fishing lure means is provided.
The sheet 12 provides markings l ó adjacent each representation 15 some of which correspond with the markings 10 adjacent the slits 7 of the retaining means 4 of the container I so that a representation 15 in a given area 14 marked by a particular marking 16 may be used to identify a lure means 8 in the container I.
The representations 15 of the fishing lures 8 comprise coloured photographs or illustrations of the lure means and names by which they are normally identified.
In Figure 3, there is shown a master container 20 which is able to contain a large number of different kinds of fishing lure means. The master container 20 comprises a base 21 and a lid 22, each having retaining means for retaining the fishing lure means. The lid 22 is subdivided into three sections 23,24,25, each section containing a plurality of different kinds of lure means of the same type.
The base 21 too is subdivided, but into two sections 26,27. The sections 23-26 each have a retaining means 30 substantially similar to that of the container I shown in figure 1, i.e. slits 31 in a bed of resilient material, but section 27 comprises a plurality of compartments 28, and a lid 29, which retains the lure means in the compartments 28.
Each slit 31 and compartment 28 have a marking M associated with it which is a number.
In use, when a fishing expedition is planned, the fisherman selects, from the master container 20 which may contain for example up to 193 fishing lure means 8, the fishing lure means which he anticipates he may wish to use on that particular expedition. These are then transferred to the container 1.
As each lure means 8 is selected and transferred to the container I corresponding markings may be placed next to the representation 15 of that lure means 8 in the reference means II and next to the associated slit 7 in the box I.
In one example, the reference means II contains the representations of all the different fishing lure means 8 of the master container 20 and each representation is marked with the same marking as the respective slit is marked within the master container. Simply, where a fly for example is transferred to the container I a marking is made adjacent the respective slit 7 in container I corresponding to the respective markings of the reference means and the master container.
For example, if the "cinnamon" fly marked "166" in the master container 20 and the reference means II is transferred from the master container 20 to the container 1, "166" is written in a space 40 adjacent the slit 7 in which it is retained.
Thus the fisherman is always able to identify the fly in the slit marked "166" as being "cinnamon" by reference to the reference means 11.
Conveniently the subsections of the container I correspond in colour to the subsections 23 to 27 of the master container, or at least some of them, so that fishing lure means 8 of the same type are grouped together.
For example, the section in the master container which contains dry flies may be coloured similarly to the section in the container I in which dry flies are placed.
In another arrangement, the fisherman need not carry around a reference means II containing representations of all 193 of the fishing lure means 8, but the fisherman may make up a reference means of the fishing lure means 8 he most often uses.
To achieve this, for example, there may be provided a catalogue of all the fishing lure means of the master container 20, from which representations of the fishing lure means 8 may be extracted, and placed in the reference means 11. To achieve this, the representations may be peelable from the catalogue and stuck to a page of the reference means. Thus corresponding markings may be provided by the representations in the reference means II and to the slits 7 of the container I to enable the fishing lure means 8 to be identified.
In another embodiment, the order of the representations in the "made up" reference means may be mimicked in the container I so that it is not essential to provide the reference means II and container I with markings.
Throughout this specification, by fishing lure means, I mean any fly or lure or any other artificial bait which has a hook portion for catching fish.
The features disclosed in the foregoing description, or the following claims, or the accompanying drawings, expressed in their specific forms or in terms of a means for performing the disclosed function, or a method or process for attaining the disclosed result, or a class or group of substances or compositions, as appropriate, may, separately or in any combination of such features, be utilised for realising the invention in diverse forms thereof.
