Abstract

An axle drive unit comprises a crown wheel (24) and pinion (25) assembly, with the crown wheel connected to a differential gearing housing outputs on an axis extending transversely of the axis of an input shaft on which the pinion is provided, has a housing comprising two parts (11, 12) joining one another at a joint face which is perpendicular to the axis (16) of the differential gearing outputs, and bearings (17 - 20) supporting the differential in the housing are located one in each housing part (10, 12). An arrangement is also discussed wherein the joint face of the housing parts is in a plane containing the differential axis and each of the bearings supporting the differential are located partly in one housing part and partly in the other housing part. <IMAGE>

Description

AXLE DRIVE UNIT This invention relates to an axle drive unit comprising a housing containing a crown wheel and pinion assembly of which the pinion is provided on an input shaft rotatable about an axis and the crown wheel is connected to a differential gearing having two outputs on an axis extending transversely of the axis of the input shaft, the outputs extending in opposite directions and being connected to respective universal joints for connection to half shafts, wherein the axis of the input shaft is offset from the differential gearing so that it extends generally between the differential gearing and one of the universal joints.
In one embodiment of axle drive unit according to the invention as described hereafter, the housing comprises two parts which join in a plane which extends generally perpendicular to the axis of the differential gearing and its outputs. The differential gearing and its outputs are supported by bearings of which the bearing at one side of the differential gearing is supported in one of the housing parts and the bearing at the other side of the differential gearing is supported in the other housing part. The pinion and input shaft are support in bearings in a further housing part which is itself detachable from one of the said housing parts.
In a further embodiment of the invention described hereafter, the housing comprises two parts which join in a plane containing the axis of the differential gearing and its outputs. The bearings by which the differential gearing and its outputs are supported are then received in respective seatings each of which is partly provided in one of the housing parts and partly provided in the other housing part. The pinion and input shaft are supported in a further housing part, as in the first embodiment of axle drive unit described herein.
In both these axle drive units according to the invention, a relatively simple arrangement for supporting the differential gearing and its outputs in the housing parts is achieved, facilitating assembly without requiring the use of additional supporting parts within the housing.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic section through one embodiment of axle drive unit according to the invention; Figure 2 is a section through a further embodiment.
Referring firstly to Figure 1, the axle drive unit there illustrated comprises a housing 10 which is in two parts 11, 12 respectively. The housing parts meet at a planar flanged joint 13, held together by bolts as 14.
The housing 10 receives a differential gearing of known type and therefore shown in outline only at 15. The differential gearing is supported, for rotation about an axis 16, by a taper roller bearing assembly 17 at one side and another taper roller bearing assembly 18 at the other side. The outer race of the taper roller bearing assembly 17 is received in a cylindrical seating 19 in the housing part 11, and the outer race of the taper roller bearing assembly 18 in a seating 20 in the housing part 10.
The differential gearing 15 has an output at each side thereof, that at the side of the bearing assembly 17 not being shown but it would extend through a generally tubular extension 21 of the housing part 11 to a universal joint, not shown, for connection to a halfshaft. The output at the opposite side of the differential gearing is also not shown in detail, but extends through the housing part 10 by way of a bearing and oil seal arrangement at 22 to a universal joint of the constant velocity ratio type shown in outline at 23.
A crown wheel 24 is connected to the carrier of the differential gearing 15, and meshes with an input pinion 25 on the end of an input shaft 26. The input shaft 26 is supported by bearing assemblies 27, 28 within a further detachable housing part 29 which meets the housing part 10 at a flanged joint 30 and is secured thereto by bolts as 31.
It will be noted that the axis (32) of the input shaft 26 passes generally between the differential gearing 15 and the universal joint 23 connected to one output thereof. The axis 32 does not have to intersect the axis 16 of the differential gearing and its outputs: it may be vertically spaced therefrom.
Referring now to Figure 2 of the drawings, this shows an axle drive unit which has the same main operative components of a differential gearing 40, crown wheel 41, and input pinion 42 on an input shaft 43, and a constant velocity ratio universal joint 44 connected to one output of the differential gearing 40. The differential gearing is supported by bearing assemblies 45, 46 for rotation about an axis 47 within the housing of the unit. The housing is of different construction from that of the Figure 1 embodiment, and comprises two housing parts 48, 49 which meet at a joint, not shown, a plane which also contains the axis of rotation 47 of the differential gearing. The housing part 48 is provided with semi-cylindrical seatings 50, 51 for the outer races of the bearing assemblies 45, 46, and the housing part 59 is provided with complementary semi-cylindrical seatings 52, 53 respectively for the outer races of the two bearing assemblies.
The arrangement of further housing part 54 in this embodiment, which has a flanged connection 55 to the housing part 49 and rotatably supports the input shaft 43, is substantially the same as in the embodiment of Figure 1.
