Abstract

Apparatus for producing animal feed comprises as shown silos (2) for storing ingredients in granular form and storage tanks (24) for storing ingredients in liquid form. Augers (3) deliver the ingredients to a hopper (4) where they are in turn delivered to a grinder (5) for grinding into powder form. A blower conveyor (9) delivers the ground material to a hopper (12) from where it is metered through a metering means (19) into a mixing tank (18). The liquid ingredients are dispensed into the mixing tank (18) from the tanks (24). Hopper (29) and auger (30) are provided for delivering other ingredients. Water may be delivered through line (27). An agitator is provided in the tank (18) for mixing the ingredients. <IMAGE>

Description

A METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR PRODUCING ANIMAL FEED The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for producing animal feed and the invention also relates to animal feed when produced according to the method and/or apparatus.
In the production of animal feed, it is normal to store the various ingredients of the animal feed in separate storage silos, the ingredients may be in powder, granular and/or particle form, and liquid form. In general, the powder or granular form ingredients are stored in silos, while the liquid form ingredients are stored in liquid storage tanks. In the manufacture of the animal feed, it is normal to transfer the granular ingredients into a mixing tank, where they are thoroughly mixed. The thoroughly mixed ingredients are then delivered to a grinder for grinding into powder form, and in turn the ground powder material is metered into a mixing tank, where it is mixed with the liquid material. The problem with these known methods of producing animal feed is that they tend to be relatively time consuming and relatively expensive.A particular amount of time is spent in the various mixing stages, which slows down the production of the feed and furthermore, because of the relatively high energy requirement of mixing, the energy requirement for producing animal feed using known methods tends to be relatively high.
Where is therefore a need for a method and apparatus for producing animal feed which overcomes these problems.
The present invention is directed towards providing such a method and apparatus.
According to the invention, there is provided a method for producing animal feed from a plurality of ingredients comprising the steps of storing some of the ingredients in granular or relatively large particle form in separate storage containers, delivering the granular form ingredients from the storage containers into a first storage hopper, delivering the granular form ingredients from the first storage hopper into a grinder, grinding the granular form ingredients substantially simultaneously to a powder consistency, delivering the ground ingredients into a second storage hopper, metering the ingredients from the second storage hopper into a mixing tank, delivering at least one ingredient in liquid form into the mixing tank, and mixing the liquid and powder ingredients in the mixing tank.
Preferably, the method further includes the step of storing at least some of the liquid ingredients in storage tanks. Advantageously, the ingredients in granular form are selected from any one or more of the following ingredients, barley, wheat, tapioca, fattymaize and soya bean, and preferably, the ingredients in liquid form are selected by any one or more of the following ingredients, whey, water and soya oil.
In one embodiment of the invention, the materials in granular form constitute between 5% to 35% of the animal feed by weight. In another embodiment of the invention, the ingredients in granular form constitute between 16% to 26 o of the animal feed by weight.
Preferably, the ingredients in granular form constitute 22% of the animal feed by weight.
In another embodiment of the invention, the ingredients in liquid form constitute between 65% to 95% of the animal feed by weight. Preferably, the ingredients in liquid form constitute between 74% to 84% of the animal feed by weight. Advantageously, the ingredients in liquid form constitute 78% of the animal feed by weight.
In one embodiment of the invention, the ingredients in granular form are ground for a period of time in the range of from ten minutes to thirty minutes per tonne of material. In another embodiment of the invention, the ingredients are mixed in the mixing tank for a period of time in the range of from five minutes to thirty minutes.
Additionally, the invention provides apparatus for producing animal feed from a plurality of ingredients according to the method of the invention, the apparatus comprising a plurality of storage containers to store ingredients in granular form separately, first conveying means to convey the ingredients in granular form from the storage containers to a first storage hopper, a grinding means for grinding the granular material to a powder consistency and means for delivering the granular ingredients from the first storage hopper to the grinding means, second conveying means for delivering the ground ingredients from the grinding means to a second storage hopper, metering means for metering the ground ingredients from the second storage hopper into a mixing tank, means for delivering ingredients in liquid form into the mixing tank and means for mixing the ingredients in the mixing tank.In one embodiment of the invention, the first conveying means comprises a plurality of individual auger conveyors, one auger conveyor associated with each storage container. In another embodiment of the invention, the second conveying means comprises a blower conveyor.
Advantageously, the metering means is provided by a metering container, the metering container having a base member pivotal from a closed position to an open position to release a metered quantity of material from the metering container when the metering container contains a certain predetermined quantity of material.
Further, the invention provides animal feed produced according to the method of the invention. The invention also provides animal feed produced from the apparatus according to the invention. Furthermore, the invention provides animal feed produced according to the method of the invention from the apparatus of the invention.
The invention will be more clearly understood from the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof, given by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a schematic representation of apparatus according to the invention for producing the animal feed also according to the invention, and Fig. 2 is a flow chart illustrating the steps employed in the method for producing the animal feed.
Referring to the drawings, apparatus according to the invention indicated generally by the reference numeral 1 for producing animal feed is illustrated in Fig. 1.
The apparatus 1 comprises a plurality of storage containers, namely four silos 2 for storing ingredients in granular or large particle form. Auger conveyors 3, one conveyor 3 associated with each silo 2, deliver the granular ingredients from the silos;2 to a first storage hopper 4. A grinding means provided by a grinder 5 for grinding the granular ingredients into powder form receives the granular material through a chute 7 from the hopper 4 and through an inlet 8 in the grinder 5. A pipe 9 from an outlet 10 of the grinder 5 forms a blower conveyor to deliver the ground powder ingredients from the grinder 5 into a second storage hopper 12. A blower motor 14 delivers air through a pipe 15 and inlet 16 into the grinder 5 for blowing the powder ingredients through the pipe 9. A 3mm screen (not shown) is provided in the outlet 10 from the grinder 5 to retain particles greater than 3mm in the grinder 5 for subsequent grinding. A flap valve 17 closes the inlet 8.
The powder ingredients are delivered from the hopper 12 into a mixing tank 18 through a metering means, in this case provided by a metering container 19 mounted at an outlet 20 of the hopper 12. The metering container 19 comprises a housing 21 with an open base, a base member 22 which is pivotal on a pivot shaft 23 closes the open base of the housing 21. When the metering container 19 contains a certain predetermined quantity of ingredients, the base member 22 pivots to open, the container 19 thus dispenses a metered quantity of the powdered material into the mixing tank 18. A closure member 13 closes the outlet 20 of the hopper 12 when the metering container comprises the predetermined quantity of ingredients and until it has discharged into the mixing tank 18. Ingredients in liquid form are stored in liquid storage tanks 24, and piped through pipes 25 into the mixing tank 18.
Valves 26 on the pipes 25 allow the liquid ingredients to be metered into the mixing tank 18. A stirrer (not shown) is provided in the mixing tank 18 for mixing the ingredients. An outlet 28 from the mixing tank delivers the mixed animal feed in liquid form from the tank 18 for use. A valve 34 opens and closes the outlet 28. A storage silo 29 is provided for storing another ingredient for the animal feed and an auger conveyor 30 delivers the ingredient from the silo 29 directly to the mixing tank 18.
Water is delivered into the mixing tank 18 through a pipeline 27 and a valve 33.
A level sensor (not shown) is provided in the mixing tank 18 to monitor the level of ingredients in the tank.
Referring now to the flow chart of Fig. 2 the steps of the method for producing the animal feed are illustrated. In this particular example, the animal feed is pig feed and comprises the following ingredients.

The liquid ingredients are stored in the liquid storage tanks 24. The method for producing the animal feed is as follows. The granular ingredients are conveyed substantially simultaneously through the auger conveyors 3 into the first storage hopper 4 with the flap valve 17 closing the inlet 8. When the storage hopper 4 is full, the augers 3 are switched off.The flap valve 17 opens the inlet 8 to deliver the granular ingredients into the grinder 5 until the grinder has been filled to a predetermined level, in this case until 1 tonne of material has been delivered into the grinder -5. The grinder 5 is then activated and the material ground into powder form for twenty minutes. The blower motor 14 is then activated to convey the powder material through the conveyor pipe 9 into the second storage hopper 12.
When the grinder is empty, it is then recharged with granular material from the storage hopper 4. This process continues until all the ingredients in the hopper 4 have been ground. While the grinding process is continuing, the powder material is being metered from the storage hopper 12 through the meter container 19 and dispensed into the mixing tank 18. The liquid ingredients are also being delivered into the mixing tank 18. The agitator (not shown) continuously mixes the ingredients as they are being dispensed into the mixing tank 18. When a full batch of the ingredients have been dispensed into the mixing tank 18, the ingredients are mixed for a further ten minutes to ensure thorough mixing of the ingredients. The animal feed in liquid form is then dispensed through the outlet 28 of the mixing tank 18 and the mixing process is repeated with a fresh batch of ingredients.
It has been found that adequate grinding is achieved by grinding the material in granular form in the grinder 5 for approximately twenty minutes per tonne.
Where desired, soya bean maybe stored in the storage silo 29 and may be delivered into the mixing tank 18 directly through the auger 30. Suitable metering apparatus is provided in the auger 30 for metering a desired quantity of soya into the mixture. In general, soya bean is only mixed into the mixture when the nutritional content of the mixture with the ingredients from the silos 2 and liquid storage tanks 24 is inadequate. In which case, only a sufficient quantity of soya bean is added to bring the nutritional value of the mixture up to the desired level. In practice, it has been found that a mixture which comprises ingredients to the proportions set out above should not require the addition of soya bean from the silo 29.However, where the quantity of fattymaize or tapioca is reduced, it has been found necessary in certain cases to add in a small quantity of soya bean from the silo 29 to bring the nutritional value of the animal feed to a desired value. The desired nutritional value of a pig fattening ration is not less than 16/o protein, 1% lysine and 3.lao digestable energy, and it has been found that the pig feed of this example, made according to the invention complies with these requirements.
The method and apparatus for producing animal feed according to the invention has many advantages.
However, the main advantage is that it overcomes most of the problems of prior art methods and apparatus in respect of mixing time and relatively high energy consumption. In fact, it has been found that by using the method and apparatus according to the invention, the energy requirement for mixing a given quantity of animal feed with a given nutritional value has been reduced by 25at. Furthermore, the total production time required in producing a batch of animal feed according to the invention has been reduced by 30ó over the fastest known method and apparatus.
This, it will be appreciated is a significant development over known prior art methods and apparatus. In fact, it has been brought about by virtue of the discovery of the inventors that by providing the apparatus according to the invention adequate mixing of the ingredients can be achieved by mixing them only once in the mixing tank. By virtue of the fact that the ingredients are conveyed substantially simultaneously from the silos 2 into the first storage hopper 4, relatively adequate mixing of the ingredients is achieved in the hopper 4. It has been discovered that this mixing together with the additional mixing action of the grinder is sufficient and no other mixing of the ingredients is required prior to mixing in the mixing tank 18. Thus, the invention provides new and surprising results which would not have been obvious from known methods and apparatus.
While the apparatus has been described as comprising four silos, the apparatus could comprise any number of silos or other storage containers. Further, it is envisaged that other shapes and construction of hoppers and grinders could be used, and it will, of course, be appreciated that conveying means other than augers and blower conveyors could be used. Indeed, in certain cases, it is envisaged that the granular ingredients may be conveyed by a blower conveyor and in certain cases the powder ingredients may be conveyed by auger conveyors, or any other suitable conveyors.
It will also be appreciated that other metering means besides the metering container described could be used without departing from the scope of the invention.
Further, it is envisaged in certain cases that the silo 29 and auger 30 may be dispensed with if desired, or indeed, more silos 29 and 30 could be provided.
It will also, of course, be appreciated that more or less liquid storage tanks 24 may be provided and these may be connected to the mixing tank by any suitable means. Indeed, in certain cases, it is envisaged that pumps may be required to deliver the liquid ingredients from the storage tanks into the mixing tank.
Further, it is envisaged that depth marks may be provided on the mixing tank to indicate the level to which the mixing tank is to be filled with the various liquid ingredients. This would be used instead of metering the liquid ingredients through the valves 26.
Furthermore, it will be-appreciated that while specific percentages of ingredients have been described in the example just described, it will be appreciated that the ingredients may be provided in other percentages. Indeed, it will be appreciated that in many cases some of the ingredients may be dispensed with altogether, while in other cases additional ingredients may be added. However, it is envisaged, in general, that the granular ingredients will constitute in the range of 5 to 35 70 by weight of the animal feed, and in general, it is preferred that the granular material should constitute in the range of 1 6at to 26% by weight of the animal feed.
Preferably, it has been found that the granular feed should constitute 22ó by weight of the animal feed.
It has also been found that animal feed of a desirable consistency and of adequate nutritional value may be provided with the ingredients in liquid form constituting in the range of 65% to 95 % by weight of the animal feed. However, it is preferable that the ingredients in liquid form should constitute between 74 to 8470 by weight of the animal feed. In a preferred embodiment of the animal feed, the ingredients in liquid form constitute 78 by weight of the animal feed.
It will of course be appreciated that while the specific grinding time and mixing time in the grinder 5 and tank 18 respectively have been described, the ingredients may be ground and mixed for other time periods. In fact, in practice, it has been found that adequate mixing can be achieved with a grinding time in the range of ten to thirty minutes per tonne of material although preferred results are achieved when the grinding time is in the range 20 to 25 minutes per tonne of material. Adequate mixing is achieved when the mixture is mixed in the tank 18 for a time period in the range of 5 to 30 minutes and preferred results are achieved when the mixing time period is in the range of 10 to 12 minutes.

Claims (42)

1. A method for producing animal feed from a plurality of ingredients comprising the steps of storing some of the ingredients in granular or relatively large particle form in separate storage containers, delivering the granular form ingredients from the storage containers into a first storage hopper, delivering the granular form ingredients from the first storage hopper into a grinder, grinding the granular form ingredients to a powder consistency, delivering the ground ingredients into a second storage hopper, metering the ingredients from the second storage hopper into a mixing tank, delivering at least one ingredient in liquid form into the mixing tank, and mixing the liquid and powder ingredients in the mixing tank.
2. A method as claimed in Claim 1 in which the method further includes the step of storing at least some of the liquid ingredients in storage tanks.
3. A method as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 in which the ingredients in granular form are selected from any one or more of the following ingredients, barley, wheat, tapioca, fattymaize and soya bean.
4. A method as claimed in any preceding claim in which the ingredients in liquid form are selected by any one or more of the following ingredients, whey, water and soya oil.
5. A method as claimed in any preceding claim in which the materials in granular form constitute between 5% to 35% of the animal feed by weight.
6. A method as claimed in Claim 5 in which the ingredients in granular form constitute between 16/o to 26/o of the animal feed by weight.
7. A method as claimed in Claim 6 in which the ingredients in granular form constitute 22 of the animal feed by weight.
8. A method as claimed in any preceding claim in which the ingredients in liquid form constitute between 65% to 95 of the animal feed by weight.
9. A method as claimed in Claim 8 in which the ingredients in liquid form constitute between 74% to 84% of the animal feed by weight.
10. A method as claimed in Claim 9 in which the ingredients in liquid form constitute 78 of the animal feed by weight.
11. A method as claimed in any preceding claim in which the ingredients in granular form are ground for a period of time in the range of from 10 minutes to 30 minutes.per tonne of material.
12. A method as claimed in Claim 11 in which the ingredients in granular form are ground for a period of time in the range of from 20 minutes to 25 minutes per tonne of material.
13. A method as claimed in Claim 12 in which the ingredients in granular form are ground for 25 minutes per tonne of material.
14. A method as claimed in any preceding claim in which the ingredients are mixed in the mixing tank for a period of time in the range of from 5 minutes to 30 minutes
15. A method as claimed in Claim 14 in which the ingredients are mixed in the mixing tank for a period of time in the range of from 10 minutes to12 minutes.
16. A method as claimed in Claim 15 in which the ingredients are mixed in the mixing tank for 10 minutes.
17. A method as claimed in any preceding claim in which the ground material is passed through a 3 mm screen.
18. A method as claimed in any preceding claim in which the ingredients in granular form are delivered from the storage containers to the first storage hopper by an auger conveyor.
19. A method as claimed in any preceding claim in which the ground material is delivered from the grinder to the second storage hopper by a blower conveyor.
20. A method as claimed in any preceding claim in which each storage container for the ingredients in granular form is provided by a silo.
21. A method as claimed in any preceding claim in which the powder material is metered from the second storage hopper by a metering container.
22. A method for producing animal feed from a plurality of ingredients substantially as described herein with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
23. Apparatus for producing animal feed from a plurality of ingredients according to the method of any of Claims 1 to 22, the apparatus comprising a plurality of storage containers to store ingredients in granular form separately, first conveying means to convey the ingredients in granular form from the storage containers to å first storage hopper, a grinding means for grinding the granular material to a powder consistency and means for delivering the granular ingredients from the first storage hopper to the grinding means, second conveying means for delivering the ground ingredients from the grinding means to a second storage hopper, metering means for metering the ground ingredients from the second storage hopper into a mixing tank, means for delivering ingredients in liquid form into the mixing tank and means for mixing the ingredients in the mixing tank.
24. Apparatus as claimed in Claim 23 in which the first conveying means comprises a plurality of individual auger conveyors, one auger conveyor associated with each storage container.
25. Apparatus as claimed in Claim 23 or 24 in which the second conveying means comprises a blower conveyor.
26. Apparatus as claimed in any of Claims 23 to 25 in which the metering means is provided by a metering container, the metering container having a base member pivotal from a closed position to an open position to release a metered quantity of material from the metering container when the metering container contains a certain predetermined quantity of material.
27. Apparatus as claimed in any of Claims 23 to 26 in which storage tanks are provided to store the liquid ingredients separately.
28. Apparatus as claimed in any of Claims 23 to 27 in which the storage containers for the granular ingredients are provided by silos.
29. Apparatus substantially as described herein with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
30. Animal feed produced according to the method of any of Claims 1 to 22.
31. Animal feed produced from the apparatus of any of Claims 23 to 29.
32. Animal feed as claimed in Claim 30 when produced from the apparatus of any of Claims 23 to 29.
33. Animal feed as claimed in any of Claims 30 to 32 in which the animal feed is manufactured from ingredients in granular or relatively large particle form and in liquid form.
34. Animal feed as claimed in Claim 33 in which the ingredients in granular form are selected from any one or more of the following ingredients, barley, wheat, tapioca, fattymango and soya bean.
35. Animal feed as claimed in any of Claims 30 to 34 in which the animal feed is manufctured from liquid ingredients which are selected from any one or more of the following ingredients, whey, water and soya oil.
36. Animal feed as claimed in Claim 35 in which the the ingredients in granular form constitute between 5 % to 35 % of the animal feed by weight.
37. Animal feed as claimed in Claim 36 in which the ingredients in granular form constitute between 16% to 265 of the animal feed by weight.
38. Animal feed as claimed in Claim 37 in which the ingredients in granular form constitute 22; of the animal feed by weight.
39. Animal feed as claimed in any of Claims 35 to 38 in which the ingredients in liquid form constitute between 65% to 95% of the animal feed by weight.
40. Animal feed as claimed in Claim 39 in which the ingredients in liquid form constitute between 74% to 84% of the animal feed by weight.
41. Animal feed as claimed in Claim 40 in which the ingredients in liquid form constitute 78% of the animal feed by weight.
42. Animal feed substantially as described herein with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
