Abstract
An article supporting device comprises a tubular member (1) to which a corkscrew shaped member (2) is fixed by welding (3) and (4). The corkscrew member (2) extends axially from one end of the tubular member (1), the internal diameter of the corkscrew, corresponding to the internal diameter of the tubular member. A T-shaped handle (5) is welded to the other end of the tubular member to assist in the rotation of the device, to screw the corkscrew member (2) into the ground (6). A knurled knob (9) having a screw-threaded pin (8) is threaded into a nut (10) and passes through a hole in the wall of the tubular member to engage and lock the handle of an article, for example, an umbrella in the supporting device. <IMAGE>
Description
AN ARTICLE SUPPORTING DEVICE
This invention relates to an article supporting device, more particularly but not exclusively, for supporting a fisherman's umbrella.
When fishing at a riverside in wet weather the fisherman often seeks shelter from an umbrella. This creates a problem for the fisherman of having to support the umbrella while casting a line or winding in a catch. One solution adopted is to support the umbrella while in an open position, by propping it against a rock or tree on the river bank with the disadvantage that a strong wind can blow the umbrella away.
It has already been proposed to fix the handle of the umbrella in a pointed metal support which support is staked in the ground. This known support has the disadvantage that the ground on the river bank is usually soft and wet and does not allow for a secure staking of the umbrella support sufficient to hold the open umbrella in a firm upright position.
An aim of the present invention is to provide an improved article supporting device which overcomes the above mentioned disadvantage.
According to the present invention there is provided an article supporting device comprising a tubular member with a corkscrew shaped member extending axially from one end thereof and means provided at the other end to assist the rotation of the corkscrew shaped member.
Preferably, the means to assist the rotation of the corkscrew shaped member is a T-shaped handle.
Conveniently, the article is secured in the tubular member by a screw-threaded pin passing through a threaded hole in the wall of the tubular member.
In a preferred construction the article supporting device is made of an aluminium alloy.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an article supporting device, according to the invention;
Figure 2 is a cross-section taken along the line 2-2 of
Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a cross-section taken along the line 3-3 of
Figure 1; and
Figure 4 is an elevation, drawn on a reduced scale, of an umbrella supported in the ground by the article supporting device shown in Figure 1.
The article supporting device comprises a tubular member 1 of an aluminium alloy to which a corkscrew shaped member 2 is fixed by welding 3 and 4 at the upper and lower ends thereof. The corkscrew shaped member 2 extends axially from one end of the tubular member 1 and is preferably made of an aluminium alloy to reduce the weight of the device while providing a sturdy rigid support for the article. The internal diameter of the corkscrew shaped member 2 corresponds to the internal diameter of the tubular member 1 to permit the straight shaft or handle of the article to pass through the tubular member 1 into the corkscrew member 2 providing a further leverage for the shaft of the article.
The other end of the tubular member has a T-shaped handle 5, made of a similar aluminium alloy rod material to the corkscrew member, which is welded to the end of the members 1 and 2. This handle is used to rotate the article supporting device as a turn-screw assisting the penetration of the corkscrew end of the device into a ground supporting surface 6 as shown in Figure 4.
The article, for example, an umbrella 7 can be secured by its handle in the tubular member 1 by a screw-threaded pin 8.
This pin has a knurled knob 9 at its outer end by which it is gripped and screwed into a nut 10 welded to and surrounding a hole formed in the wall of the tubular member 1.
To use the device the handle 5 is gripped and the corkscrew shaped end 2 is screwed into the ground 6 until the lower end of the tubular member 1 engages the ground surface. The handle of the umbrella 7 is located in the tubular member and secured therein by screwing in the knurled knob 9 to engage the screw-thread pin 8 with the handle.
The improved article supporting device has a number of advantages over existing ground supporting devices in that it can penetrate hard ground without the need for hammering it into the ground. The corkscrew shaped end can avoid or displace any pieces of flint or other stones which may be in the path of a conventional stake.
Various modifications may be made to the article supporting device described, for example, the knurled knob can be replaced by other securing means such as a turn-key.
Similarly, the material from which the device is made may be any suitable metal which is non-corrosive or coated with a plastics material to protect it from corrosion and to assist in the easy cleaning of the device.
Although the article supported by the device is described as a fisherman's umbrella, it will be obvious that it has many other uses such as a tent peg to secure the guy-ropes of a tent or other awning, by golfer's to support a golf umbrella, or even as a ground supporting device for posts as may be used in fences or other temporary enclosures or barriers.
