Abstract

An artefact 1 for the preparation of a grass-covered area comprises a roll of flexible sheet material 2 impregnated with grass seed 3. The flexible sheet material 2 comprises peat and/or other organic growth-promoting substances and the grass seed 3 may be evenly impregnated below the surface of the material 2 to frustrate attempts by birds to consume the seed, when the material is laid. The sheet material 2 is covered with an opaque plastics material 4 which, by the exclusion of light and/or moisture, at least retards premature germination of the grass seed 3, until the covering material 4, e.g. black coloured polythene, is stripped from the base material 2. The material 4 could be applied to each side of the sheet material 2, or as a total wrapping of a roll. <IMAGE>

Description

IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO THE PREPARATION OF GRASS-COVERED AREAS This invention relates to the preparation of grass-covered areas, such as lawns.
According to the invention, an artefact for the preparation of a grass-covered area comprises flexible sheet material impregnated with grass seed.
The flexible sheet material may comprise at least one or more organic substance, for example, peat.
The artefact may be covered with material which at least retards premature germination of the grass seed.
The invention also comprises a method of covering an area with grass, comprising laying on the area one or more of the artefacts.
The invention further comprises an area covered by the aforesaid method.
The invention also comprises any novel subject matter or combination including novel subject matter herein disclosed.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the artefact in roll form, and Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the artefact material.
With reference to Figures 1 and 2, an artefact 1 for the preparation of a grass-covered area comprises a roll of flexible sheet material 2 impregnated with grass seed 3.
The flexible sheet material of this embodiment comprises peat and/or other organic growth-promoting substances. The grass seed 3 is evenly impregnated to a depth and density depending on requirements.
Inter alia, impregnating the grass seed 3 below the surface of the material 2 frustrates attempts by birds to consume the seed, when the material is laid.
The sheet material 2 is covered with an opaque plastics material 4 which, by the exclusion of light and/or moisture, at least retards premature germination of the grass seed 3, until the covering material is stripped from the base material 2. Black coloured polythene would appear to provide a suitable material 4.
The opaque covering material could be applied to each side of the sheet material 2, or as a total wrapping of a roll of material 2.
In use, the artefact 1 is used on prepared ground. The artifact is then unrolled and the covering material removed therefrom. The exposed material 2 is spread over the prepared ground, pegged down, and watered.
The grass seed 3 is expected to grow quickly, being planted in good conditions, the roots growing through the material 2 and into the soil beneath.
The material 2 may incorporate at least one nutritious substance such as nitrogen, a phosphate or potash.
Bird repellant substances may also be incorporated.
Manufacturing the artefact in roll form makes it easy to handle.
The flexible sheet material 2 could comprise rock fibre material such as that marketed under the Mark "Rockwool".
Various grades of the invention may be provided, in order to achieve a domestic lawn, a high quality bowling green, a recreation field or a grass verge.
At the present time, one can only safely sow grass seed in the autumn or spring as it generally is too cold in the winter and too dry in the summer.
The present invention substantially extends-the grass growing times of the year.
