Description

FISH BAG The present invention relates to a fish bag.
When anglers catch a large specimen of certain fish, such as carp or pike, they often need to be kept for long periods under water. For example, the fish may be caught at night and may need to be held captive until the morning when it can be weighed, photographed or shown to scrutineers.
It is important that the fish should not be harmed before being released and the present invention is concerned with a bag for holding a large fish captive under water without endangering the fish.
A fish bag according to the invention comprises an elongate sack of finely woven fabric, releasable fastening means for enabling a fish to be introduced into the sack, a rigid frame at least at one end of the sack, and means for anchoring the frame(s) in a generally upright attitude to form a tunnel.
The tunnel like formed by placing at least one rigid frame in the sack provides increased space for the fish to move without coming into contact with the walls of the sack. Furthermore, as the sack is of finely woven mesh, there is no risk of the scales of the fish becoming entangled within the fabric.
In use, the sack is placed on the bed of the waterway and the frame is anchored in such a way that the tunnel points into the tide. In this way, an adequate flow of water past the fish is ensured and a pressure is developed within the sack to inflate the walls of the tunnel. The fabric within the frame may be of a more open weave or of netting to provide for improved water circulation through the tunnel.
If desired, holes may be formed in the finely woven fabric to assist further in the circulation of water.
The releasable fastening means preferably comprise a zip fastener extending the length of the sack, to permit easy introduction and removal of the fish.
The anchoring means may comprise rings secured to the frame for receiving pegs, strings or stakes to maintain the frame or frames upright in the water.
The invention will now be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, which shows a fish bag in accordance with the invention.
The fish bag 10 in the drawings is formed of an elongate sleeve 12 of finely woven nylon. A zip fastener 14 extends along the length of the sleeve 12 and the latter is closed at its end 16 by being stitched. Small holes 15 are formed in the sleeve 10 to assist the passage of water through sleeve.
A triangular frame 18 is sewn into the other end of the sleeve 12 and is filled with a nylon net 20. The frame 18 has rings 22 at each corner. In use, the lower of the two rings are anchored to the river bed directly by means of pegs and the uppermost ring is connected by a string to a further peg to keep the frame 18 upright.
In use, the triangular tunnel for containing the caught fish is anchored on the river bed pointing into the tide. Water flowing into the tunnel through the frame 18 emerges through the sleeve 12 and flows over the fish to ensure an adequate supply of oxygen.
In this way, the fish is securely held with minimum discomfort and danger of its scales being entangled.
