Abstract

A plastic strap has a single hole (2) at one end to fit over the earth pin of a 13 amp plug. Two holes (3, 4) are provided at the opposite end to fit over the live and neutral pins once the strap has been formed into a loop, thereby creating a handle. A slot (9) is provided for the appliance flex to pass through. <IMAGE>

Description

ELECTRTC PLUG REMOVAL AID This invention relates to a device attached to an electrical plug to aid the removal of the plug from an electrical socket.
By design, 13 amp plug tops exhibit resistance to withdraw from appropriate supply sockets for safety reasons. This resistance sometimes makes it very difficult for certain groups of people to remove them, i.e. elderly people or people with a disabling condition such as arthritis. For some of these people it is difficult to grip the plug top with enough force to enable it to be withdrawn.
Plug tops with integral hooks or rings to create finger holds are known, however, they are relatively expensive, do not provide a large enough hand hold and are obviously dedicated to the appliance to which they are fitted According to the present invention there is provided a device to aid the removal of electrical plug tops from their appropriate sockets easily and safely. A large hand hold is provided. It is simple in design, inexpensive to produce and can be fitted to any existing 13 amp plug top. It can be moved from one plug to another. The plug top does not need to be taken apart nor does there need to be any alteration, disconnection etc of the plug top wiring.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a plan view of the device before fitting to a plug top.
Figure 2 illustrates the device as fitted to a plug top.
Referring to the drawings the device comprises a strip of flexible electrically insulative material 1 with holes 2.3.4. of a suitable size and suitably positioned so as to fit over the three pins 5.6.7. of a 13 amp plug top 8. A slot 9 is provided to enable the appliance cable 10 to pass through the device 1. A cut 13 in the material enables the device to be fitted to the plug top 8 without disturbing the appliance connections.
In order to fit the device, hole 2 is positioned over pin 5, the device 1 is then bent round as shown in fig. 2 subsequently passing the cable 10 through the cut 11 into the slot 9 and finally positioning holes 3 and 4 over pins 6 and 7. The flexible insulative material is of a thickness such that it affords sufficient strength without affecting the function in any way of the plug top and the socket into which it is inserted. Examples of such material are Cast Polyester film and Unplasticised Polyvinyl Chloride. A material thickness of 0.40mm is preferred but this will vary according to the specific material used.

Claims (2)

1. A device to aid the removal of electrical plug tops from supply sockets, comprising a strip of electrically insulative flexible material to form a substantially circular hand hold and provided with appropriate hole/holes at each end to facilitate fitting over the pins of such a plug top. Additionally, a slot is provided to enable the electrical flex from the plug top to pass conveniently through the device.
2. A device to aid the removal of electrical plug tops from supply sockets substantially as described herein with reference to figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings.
