Abstract
A modular light strip consists of a printed circuit board 2, on which are mounted a socket 1, lamp holders 3 (containing light sources 4) and a plug 5. The strips may be connected together to form a strip of the required length. Electrical power is applied to the strip via a mating socket and lead. The light sources are connected in parallel with the power supply and therefore the individual strips may also be cut to the required length. <IMAGE>
Description
MODULAR LIGHT STRIP
This invention relates to a modular light strip.
Light tubes consisting of a clear plastic tube containing miniature lamps have been available for some time. One use for such tubing is in specially designed step edgings, which have a recess to accomodate the tube. Light tubes have certain disadvantages, lamp replacement can only be undertaken by trained personnel using specialist tools and each tube has to be manufactured to the exact length required. A modular system of standard length light strips using plug-in lamps, which may be interconnected and cut to form a continuous strip of the required length would overcome these problems.
According to the present invention thereis provided a modular light strip comprising a printed circuit board, containing equally spaced lamp holders to accomodate plug-in light sources. At one end of the strip is a plug at the other a socket. These enable the strips to be connected together both electrically and mechanically and to provide a connection to the power supply via a lead with a mating plug or socket.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figures shows a top view of the modular light strip showing the relative positions of the socket, lamp holders, light sources and plug on the printed circuit board.
Figure 2 shows a side view of the modular light strip.
Figure 9 shows the reverse side of the modular light strip indicating the copper tracks.
Figure 4 illustrates the interconnection of the light strips with the power supply lead in position.
Figure 5 shows the electrical circuit of the modular light strip system.
Figure 6 indicates an application of the modular light strip system when used in,conjunction with a PVC step edging.
Figure 7 indicates an application of the modular light strip system when used in conjunction with an aluminium step edging.
Refering to Figs 1, 2 & 3 the modular light strip consists of a printed circuit board 2, on one side of which are positioned the socket 1, lamp holders 3 ( containing light sources 4 ) and a plug 5. The legs 6 of these components pass through holes in the printed circuit board 2 and ase soldered to copper tracks 7.
The modular light strips may be connected together as shown in Fig 4 to form a continuous strip. A socket with integral lead 8 which mates with plug 5 applies power to the circuit.
Fig 5 shows the electrical circuit of the modular ligilt strip, the light sources are connected in parallel across the two copper tracks 9. This means that the strip may be cut at any position to produce the required length, without affecting the operation of the remaining light sources.
The power applied to the circuit may be A.C. or D.C..
Fig 6 shows the modular light strip used in conjunction with a PVC step edge extrusion 10. The modular light strip fits into a recess 11 in the front of the step edge and is held in place by a transparent clip-in cover 12.
Fig 7 shows the use of an alternative aluminium step edge extrusion 13.
An insulating channel 14 is placed into the front recess to prevent the copper tracks of the strip shorting to the metal step edge.
The light sources 4 in the example referred to above are incandescent filament lamps.
Claims (2)
1 A modular light strip comprising a printed circuit board, containing equally spaced lamp holders to accomodate plug-in light sources. At one end of the strip is a plug at the other a socket. These enable the strips to be connected together both electrically and mechanically and to provide a connection to the power supply via a lead with a mating plug or socket.
The connectors allow the light strips to be connected together to form a continuous strip. The light sources are connected in parallel within the circuit and therefore individual strips may be cut to produce a strip of the required length.
2 A modular light strip as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the light sources: es are neons with suitable voltage dropping resistors or light emitting diodes with voltage dropping resistors for D.C. operation and rectifier diodes for a.c. operation 3 A modular light strip substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1-7 of the accompanying drawing.
