Abstract

An artist's palette comprising a base 10 for receiving deposits of oil paints and having an upstanding peripheral wall 14. The base 10 may be formed with depressions e.g. 16 for receiving the different deposits of oil paint. A depth of water may be contained over the base and the deposits of oil paint received thereon. This water prevents the oils from drying up or forming a skin so that they can be left on the palette covered by water, for an extended period. A cover is provided for fitting over the palette and onto the rim of the peripheral wall 14. <IMAGE>

Description

ARTIST'S PALETTE This invention relates to an artist's palette for use in painting with oil paints.
In using a conventional palette deposits of oil paints of different colours are placed on its surface but tend to dry and become covered in a skin if left for any length of time. This is wasteful of the oil paints, which are expensive. I have now devised a palette which in use overcomes these difficulties.
In accordance with this invention, there is provided an artist's palette comprising a base for receiving deposits of oil paints and having an upstanding peripheral wall so that a depth of water may be contained over the base and the deposits of oil paint received thereon.
If the palette is to be left for a period of time, it may be filled with water to an appropriate depth to cover the deposits of oil paint on its base. Because the deposits of oil paint are covered by the water, they are prevented from drying up or forming a skin and can be left on the palette, covered with water, for an extended period.
Oil paints are such, however, that they will not mix with the water or be affected by the presence of the water.
When the palette is to be used again, the water can be poured out and painting continued in the usual way. Alternatively, paints may be deposited on the base through the water, mixed under water using brushes and then used by dipping the brush into the paints through the water.
Preferably a cover is provided which may be fitted over the -palette and onto the rim of the upstanding peripheral wall. This may be a snap-fit, screw-fit or otherwise.
The surface of the base may be formed with depressions for receiving the different deposits of oil paints, or it may instead be plain.
The palette preferably includes a portion extending beyond the upstanding peripheral wall, which extension portion is formed with a thumb-hole for use in holding the palette and also apertures for receiving pots or other containers for e.g. oils or thinners. Such pots may be provided with lids. This apertured extension portion may be in the same plane as the base or in a parallel plane at or adjacent the top of the peripheral wall Embodiments of this invention will now be described by way of examples only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: FIGURE 1 is a plan view of an artist's palette in accordance with the invention, shown with its lid removed; FIGURE 2 is a section on the line A-A of Figure 1 but showing a lid of the palette in position; FIGURE 3 is a section through a pot for reception in an aperture of an extension portion of the palette; and FIGURE Ii is a plan view of a modified palette in accordance with the invention.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, there is shown an artist's palette having a generally flat base 10 of circular shape and having an extension portion 12 which is outside an upstanding wall 14 which runs round the periphery of the circular main portion 10 of the base The main base portion 10 may be formed with depressions, one of which is shown at 16 in Figures 1 and 2, for receiving deposits of oil paint. A circular lid 18 is pro vided and is formed with an annular grooved flange 19 around its periphery, arranged in the example shown so that the lid is a snap-fit over the rim 20 of the wall 14 in order to seal the palette.
The extension portion 12 of the palette base is formed, in the example shown, with apertures 22, each of which may receive a pot or other container, such as the pot 24 shown in Figure 3. This pot is provided with a lid 26 having an annular grooved flange 28 arranged in the example shown so that it is a snap-fit over the nim of the pot, for sealing the latter. The extension portion 12 is also formed with an oval thumb-hole 23 for use in gripping the palette with the thumb.
The palette, its lid, the pots and their lids may all be formed of plastics material by injection moulding.
It will be noted that all corners of these components are rounded for ease of handling and cleaning.
In use, as previously described, the palette is partially filled with water over its main base portion 10, the upstanding wall 14 serving to contain this water, if it is to be left for a period of time with deposits of oil paint on its base. These deposits of oil may be placed on the upper surface of main base portion 10, either in its locating depressions 16 or on its plain flat surface areas.
The palette may be left for an extended period with the deposits of oil paint provided these are kept submerged under the water. The lid 18 may be applied if desired to seal the palette when not in use and during transport.
The pots as shown in Figure 3 may be located in the apertures 22 of the extension portion 12 of the pallet base and, as mentioned previously, these pots may contain oils or thinners.
Whilst in the example shown in Figures 1 and 2 the apertured projecting portion 12 is in the same plane as the base 10 of the palette, it may instead lie in a parallel plane further up the peripheral wall 14, for example at or adjacent the top of this wall. Thus, in the modified palette shown in Figure 4, the apertured projecting portion 12 extends from the top of the wall 14, so that in effect the palette is in the form of a shallow pan with a base 10 for receiving the paints.
