Abstract

The retention of tar as compared to the retention of nicotine is increased by providing (a) cigarette filter paper carrying methoxypolyethyleneglycol and (b) a tobacco smoke filter comprising paper gathered and held in rod form, the gathered paper carrying methoxypolyethyleneglycol. The paper and filter can also comprise activated carbon and menthol.

Description

PAPER FILTERS The present invention relates to tobacco smoke filters made of paper. These are well known as filters, or components of filters, mainly for cigarettes but also for pipes, cigars etc.
The interaction of tobacco smoke with filters depends on the nature of the smoke and the composition of the filtering medium.
Thus individual compounds or groups of related compounds may be retained by the filter selectively, i.e. to a greater or lesser extent than other components of the smoke.
For example, with alkaline smoke from air-cured tobaccos, cellulose acetate filters have a greater percentage nicotine retention (NR) than tar retention (TR), i.e. the TR/NR ratio is generally less than 1. The reverse is the case with acidic smoke from flue cured tobaccos where the TR/NR ratio is generally greater than 1.
The TR/NR ratio of paper filters made with pure cellulose is usually 1 or slightly less for acidic smoke.
Neither cellulose acetate nor paper filters have significant effects on the vapour phase of smoke.
It is useful to have a means of adjusting TR/NR ratios of filters and to provide means for selectively retaining vapour phase components of the smoke in order to optimise filtration characteristics according to tobacco blend, to meet the smoking characteristics required by cigarette designers.
We have found that the presence of methoxy polyethylene glycol (MPEG) in paper filters increases the TR/NR ratio with smoke from the mixture is preferably at least 650 and its melting or softening point at least 20 C.
Various examples of cigarette filters according to the invention are summarised in the following Tables. The MPEG employed in each case was MPEG 650 (i.e. of 650 average molecular weight).
In Table 1 the filters were "Myria" (Trade Mark) creped paper gathered into circular rod form in standard plugwrap, each filter rod being 15mm long and of 24mm circumference; the Myria paper was loaded before rod formation with the indicated amounts (in weight percent of the paper) of MPEG 650. The filters of Table 2 differ from this only in being 20mm long. In Table 3 the filters are of dual construction, each having a 16mm long Myria rod of the Table 1 type held in longitudinal abutment with a 6mm long NWA rod by means of a common combining plugwrap, to give a filter 22mm long and 24.8mm in circumference; the NWA (non-wrapped acetate) section is a rod of gathered and bonded crimped cellulose acetate tow; MPEG is incorporated only in the Myria section and the percentage quoted is again based on the weight of paper.Table 4 shows for cigarettes provided with filters as in Table 3, the yields (in mg per cigarette) of total particulate matter (water-nicotine free) and of nicotine, and also the tar/nicotine yield ratio; in the dual filters of Tables 3 and 4, the NWA segment is disposed at the buccal end and the Myria segment towards the tobacco. In Table 5 the filters are of the Table 1 type but with the addition of activated carbon to the paper, the filters being 16mm long and 24.65mm in circumference; the MPEG and activated carbon content are quoted in mg per filter and the Table quotes the retention of important vapour phase components.
The yield and retention values quoted in Tables 1 to 5 are all for flue cured tobacco, i.e. acid smoke.
