Abstract

A carrying handle for a disposable carton, comprises a backing strip (1) and a handle portion (2) moulded in one piece from plastics material. The handle is formed with one end of the handle portion (2) connected to the backing strip (1) and with the other end free. The free end is designed so that it can be manipulated through a slot (3) in the backing strip (1) and become trapped behind it.

Description

Improvements relating to Handles This invention relates to carrying handles for use on cardboard cartons and the like disposable cartons, for example large cartons of detergent and cartons containing bulky items such as duvets.
It is advantageous that such handles are manufactured cheaply since they are normally discarded with the cartons, are readily fitted to the cartons and do not interefere with the stacking of the cartons.
One form of handle presently in use comprises a strip of flexible plastics material forming a handle portions and whose ends pass through the carton wall and locate in a separately formed backing strip positioned behind the carton wall. The flexible strip is provided at its ends with ears, feet or the like which are manipulated through slots in the backing strip to trap the ends of the flexible strip behind the backing strip.
The present invention provides a carrying handle in which the backing strip and the handle portion are moulded in one piece from plastics material, with one end of the handle portion connected to the backing strip and the other end free, the free end being designed so that it can be manipulated through a slot in the backing strip and become trapped behind it.
A carrying handle in accordance with the invention can be readily attached to a carton wall by first feeding the handle portion through a slot in the carton wall from behind, then passing it through another slot from the front and then manipulating the free end through the slot in the backing strip.
Advantageously the slot in the backing strip extends to and is open to one side edge of the backing strip so that after moulding the handle can be withdrawn from the mould edgeways on, and the slot in the backing strip is formed by a part of the moulding tool which during the withdrawal passes through the open end of the slot so that a cored tool does not have to be used for moulding.
The invention will now be further described by way of example with reference to the accompany drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the handle in the position in which it is moulded, and Figure 2 shows a side view of the handle in its fitted position in a carton.
The handle comprises a one piece moulding of, for example polypropylene and has a backing strip 1 providing a base plate, and a handle portion 2. The backing strip 1 has a transverse slot 3 formed in it. The slot 3 extends to and is open to one side edge 5 of the backing strip 1. For strength purposes a web 4 bridges the slot at its open end and at a level below the plane of the backing strip 1. Hence a portion of the moulding tool for forming the slot 3 can pass through the open end of the slot 3 in the direction of arrow A during demoulding as the handle is withdrawn edge-on from the mould.
The length of the handle portion 2 is greater than the distance between the connection of the handle portion 2 with the backing strip 1 and the slot 3 and the handle portion is resiliently deformable to a bowed shape longitudinally as shown in Figure 2.
The free end of the handle portion 2 is provided with a foot 6 which extends in a plane which is at an angle to that of the handle portion 2 and which can be manipulated through the slot 3 when fitting the handle to a carton wall 7 (Figure 2) so that the handle assumes the form shown in Figure 2. Thus the foot 6 is has a front portion 8 which extends forwardly from the handle portion 2 and a heel portion 9 which extends rearwardly from it. To fit the foot 6 into the slot 3, the handle portion 2 is bowed and the front portion 8 threaded into the slot 3. The handle portion 2 is pressed downwardly towards the backing strip 1 to reduce the bowing and to cause the foot to slide forwards until the heel portion 9 snaps through the slot 3. The foot 6 is then trapped behind the slot 3 as shown in Figure 2.

Claims (6)

1. A carrying handle for a disposable carton, comprising a backing strip and a handle portion moulded in one piece from plastics material with one end of the handle portion connected to the backing strip and the other end free, said free end being designed so that it can be manipulated through a.slot in the backing strip and become trapped behind it.
2. A carrying handle for a disposable carton, comprising a backing strip and a handle portion moulded in one piece from plastics material with one end of the handle portion having a connection to the backing strip adjacent one end of the backing strip and with the other end free, the backing strip being provided with a transverse slot adjacent its other end and the handle portion being resiliently deformable and of a length which is greater than the distance between said connection and said slot and said free end of the handle portion being designed so that it can be manipulated through said slot and become trapped behind it.
3. A carrying handle according to claim 2, wherein said handle portion is resiliently deformable into a bowed shape longitudinally and said free end of the handle portion is provided with a foot extending in a plane at an angle to the handle portion and having a front portion and a heel portion extending forwardly and rearwardly respectively of the handle portion, whereby the foot can be manipulated through the slot in the backing strip by first locating the front of the foot in the slot and pushing it forwards until the heel portion snaps through the slot and the foot becomes trapped behind the slot.
4. A carrying handle according to any preceding claim, wherein said slot in the backing strip extends to and is open to one side edge of the backing strip.
5. A carrying handle according to claim 4, wherein a web integrally formed with the backing strip bridges across said slot at said one side edge and at a level below the plane of the backing strip.
6. A carrying handle substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
