Abstract
A header beam which can be used as a primary support beam or a ground distribution beam and which, when connected to another such beam, will give a flush top and bottom flange is described. The beam has first attachment means 58a on one end snuggly engaging the web 62 of the beam and second attachment means 58b at the other end which are positioned away from the web of the beam and which extend between the flanges (56 and 57 Fig 3) of the beam. <IMAGE>
Description
IMPROVEMENTS IN AND RELATING TO A BEAM
This invention relates to a beam.
In accordance with the invention a beam has
first attachment means at one end snuggly engaging the
web of the beam, and second attachment means at the
other end of the beam positioned away from the web of
the beam and extending between the flanges of the beam.
The first and second connecting means are so dimensioned and arranged suck0 that the first attachment means of one headed beam cooperates and can be attached to the second attachment means of another headed beam.
The first attachment means preferably extends beyond the outer end of the beam, while the second attachment means does not extend beyond the other end of the beam.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of a trestling
arrangement including a number of beams in accordance
with the present invention,
Figure 2 is a side view of a strutting
arrangement using a pair of beams in accordance with the
present invention,
Figure 3 is an enlarged side view of the header beam as shown in Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a plan cross-sectional view of the
beam of Figure 3, taken along the line A-A of Figure 3, and
Figure 5 is a plan cross-sectional view of the beam of Figure 3, taken along line B-B of Figure 3.
In Figure 1, ive props 10 are shown in a heavy duty arrangement, the props 10 being connected together by a number of bracing panels 12. The head sections 14 of the props 10 are shown supporting
I-shaped header beams 16 (see Figures 3 to 5), the cross fall of which is taken up by prop heads 18, adjustable screws 20 and pivoting screw plates 22.
In Figures 3 to 5, the header beam 16 is shown in greater detail having an upper flange 18, a lower flange 20, and a web 22 interconnecting the upper and lower flanges. At one end of the beam 16, two attachment plates 24 are snuggly provided one each side of the web 22 (see Figure 3), the plates 24 extending beyond the outer end of the I-shaped beam 16, and each being provided with three holes 26. At the other end of the beam 16, two similar attachment plates 28 are also provided, however these plates 28 do not extend beyond the outer end of the I-shaped beam 16, and are positioned away from the web 2 and extend between the upper and lower flanges 18 and 20 (see Figure 5).
The attachment plates 28 are also provided with three holes 26, and the web 22 of the beam 16 is
also provided with three holes 30 in alignment with the holes 26 of the plates 28. The arrangement of the attachment plates 24 and 28 are such that the plates 24 on one headed beam 16 can co-operate and be joined to the attachment plates 28 on another headed beam 16 (see
Figure 1). The headed beams 16 can be used either as primary support beams or as ground distribution beams since they provide a flat surface on both the upper and lower flanges 18 and 20.
In Figure 2 a prop 10 is shown used for cofferdam strutting, and for long distances the strut capacity can be maintained by the addition of bracing panels 54 to reduce self weight bending. In Figure 2 the props extend between two headed beams 56 which engage the side walls of the cofferdam.
The header beams can be used as primary
support beams or ground distribution beams and will give
a flush top and bottom flange allowing freedom of position for any support members or formwork. Splice connections between beams are made using pins and beams are bolted down to prop head or base using single bolt connections.
Claims (3)
1. A beam having first attachment means at one end snuggly engaging the web of the beam and second attachment means at the other end positioned away from the web of the beam to extend between flanges of the beam.
2. A beam as claimed in Claim 1 in which the first and second connecting means are so dimensioned and arranged that the first attachment means of one beam cooperates with and ca-n be attached to the second attachment means of another beam as claimed in Claim 1.
3. A beam as claimed in Claim 1 or 2 in which the first attachment means extends beyond the outer end of the beam, the second attachment means being within the confines of the beam at the other end thereof.
