Abstract

Means for converting a headlamp designed for driving on one side of the road so that it becomes suitable for use on the other side comprise pairs of trapezias of translucent, flexible, adhesive backed plastics material, affixed to headlamps. The converters may be coloured amber or be refracting.

Description

Headlamp Converters This invention relates to means for converting a vehicle headlamp beam designed for driving on one side of the road such that it becomes suitable for driving on the opposite side of the road.
Prior proposals include blanking out part of the beam with opaque material fitted to the headlamp such prior art proposals suffer from a number of disadvantages. First the opaque material significantly reduces the total amount of light illuminating the road in front of the vehicle.
Secondly if it is desired to convert the beam colour to amber, which colour is preferred or mandatory in some countries, it is necessary either to paint the headlamp glass or to cover the exposed area with a coloured film.
According to the invention there is provided means for diffusing a preselected portion of a dipped headlamp beam, the diffusing means being applied to the exterior surface of the lamp and the preselected portion being that portion of the beam which would otherwise dazzle on-coming drivers on the opposite side of the road.
In one embodiment of the invention the diffusing means is a sheet of flexible plastics material having an adhesive backing, the sheet being shaped to define, or having delineated thereon, a translucent area of generally trapeziodal shape. After cutting the translucent area to the required size and peeling away a release backing, the translucent material is adhesively bonded to that portion of the headlamp lens which produces the upwardly inclined edge portion of the dipped beam. Alternatively the sheet could be face cut so that it is peeled from a backing sheet and trimmed to size when applied to the lens.
The diffusing means may be tinted, for example amber, so that the beam is coloured obviating the need for painting the headlamp or covering it with a large sheet of material. Preferably the diffusing means is capable of transmitting at least 85 & preferably at least 90% and especially at least 95% of at least one wavelength.
The device of the invention is superior to knowp opaque, devices in that less light is wasted. In a preferred embodiment the diffusing means is prismatic or is in the form of a fresnel lens so that the beam is refracted as well as diffused so that the light output is utilised even more fully.
One example of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which the sole figure illustrates a sheet of flexible translucent plastics material having two pairs of opposite-handed generally trapezoidal shapes delineated thereon, each pair comprising a first trapezium lOa, 10b in full outline and a second opposite-handed trapezium lla, llb in dashed outline. One side of the translucent material is coated with pressure sensitive adhesive and provided with a release backing.
The illustrated sheet is sold as a universal headlamp converter kit with instructions for cutting out either the left or right-handed pairs of trapeziums 10, 11 depending on whether the lamps were to be converted for use on the right-hand side or left-hand side of the road.
Each trapezium 10, 11 has a base line 12, 13 which is aligned with a corresponding base line on the headlamp lens. The remaining part of the trapezium may then be cut, for example along the guide lines 14, 15 or 16 (or 17, 18, 19), to suit the size and/or type of headlamp so that only the relevant part of the headlamp beam is diffused.
