Description

DECORATOR'S AID This is a wooden trestle, for use on a staircase with a set of step ladders which I've made as follows: 1. The top comprises of a piece of b" plywood, edged on the top surface with 1" x lah" laths, on the underside in the centre I' ve fitted a retainer for the leg stay.
These comprise of 2 x 5" length bars of 1' x 1" wood, with a %" gap.
2. The legs are fitted to one end of the trestle top by means of 2 x 2" folding hinges, the legs themselves are made of 3 x lid" planed wood attached together with 1 x li" cross members positioned at the top and middle of legs.
The leg stay is made from %" round bar to fit from centre of legs to centre of underside top.
3. At the other end of the trestle I've fitted a lateral clamp made from b" steel tubing. Into this fits a hand grip screw of i" round, at the other end of the hand grip I' ve fitted 2" diameter rubber suction pads which I have fastened on to the top of the trestle top with 2 x 2" studs.
To use this trestle, place at any stair level, drop leg down and lock stay into position, screw clamp into sides of staircase, place step ladder on trestle top.
I have used the above materials which were easily available to me.
However, I would like to see this design made in other materials, such as cast aluminium for light-weight, and swivel lock hinges, which would again reduce the weight, therefore making the design more portable, also adjustable feet to be more adaptable for varying size stairs. The top could be of an extendable nature for the same purpose. Maybe a lever lock would be more suitable for the easy release of the lateral suction pads. A handle could be fitted for easy carrying.
Prototype - designed and made on 7th June. i- 7 .

Claims (1)

  1. A stair trestle comprising of a flat oblong tray to provide a surface for standing a ladder or steps on.
this having one end resting on the higher tread in a clamped position by means of a lateral clamp. A depending leg attached adjacent to tray, the other end of the said oblong to rest on a lower stair tread, these are adjustable to accomodate different sizes.
    1. This leg is adjustable by means of removing the pins and sliding the adjustable legs up and down for the varying sizes of stair treads.
The end of the oblong tray which is at the upper most is clamped with a device called a Lateral Clamp, the said clamp has a removeable stop at one side and a screw that slides in and out by means of a winged nut to tension in a clamped position. The said screw and stop are inter changeable to alternate sides.
The oblong tray is fitted all round with raised sides to prevent ladders or steps from sliding off the tray. The legs are hinged at the top of the oblong tray by means of a pin, as well as the tray and leg having a stay fitted to hold the said legs and tray in a rigid position. the said stay is attached to the bottom of the tray and slotted into eye brackets attached to the leg centers. With the stay removed from the legs and folded down the legs and tray all lay parallel onto itself.
thus forming a flat stow position.
A stair trestle substantially as hereinbefore described, with reference to and as illustrated in Figures 1 of 3 of the accompanying drawings.
Amendments to the claims have been fixed as follow 1 A Stair Trestle comprising of a flat oblong tray to provide a surface for standing a ladder or steps on Fig.3 This having an end resting on the higher tread in a clamped position by means of a Lateral Clamp. A depending Leg attached adjacent to tray, the other end of the said oblong to rest on a Lower Stair Tread.
2 The end of the oblong tray which is as the upper most, is clamped with a device called a Lateral Clamp Fig.2 (8) The said clanp has screws that turn out on either side allowing it to be fastened onto the side of the upper most Tread, retaining it in a clamped position.
3 The oblong tray Fig.2 (9) is fitted all round with raised sides to prevent ladders or steps from sliding off. The legs are hinged at the opposite end to the lateral clamp on the oblong tray. To hold the legs and Tray in a rigid position they are fitted with a Stay Fig.l (6) which runs from the Legs to the under side of the Tray and held in position in a Slot in thunder side of the Tray.
