Description
Specification
Lamp Mounting
This invention relates to a lamp mounting.
According to the invention, there is provided a lamp mounting comprising a bracket having means for mounting a lamp thereon, and at least one permanent magnet fixedly secured to the bracket for enabling the bracket to be attached to a supporting member of magnetically susceptible material.
The bracket in accordance with the invention is especially intended for use on building sites or analogous industrial environments, where there is often a requirement to mount floodlights or equivalent powerful and mains operable lamps to girder work, the jibs or like parts of cranes, etc., but drilling or other working or deformation of the girder, crane jib, etc., to establish a lamp mounting point is neither desirable nor permissible.
A preferred bracket is of a T-shape or an L-shape, which is intended to be mounted with one limb vertical at the back and one limb extending generally horizontally forwardly from the vertical back limb. In this preferred bracket, two or more limpet magnets are secured on the rear face of the vertical limb, and the front end of the forwardly extending limb has a vertical swivel bolt mounting for an upstanding
U-shaped member, the floodlight or other lamp being mounted between the upper ends of the arms of the U-member for tipping forwardly and downwardly or rearwardly and upwardly about a generally horizontal pivot axs. With this arrangement, the lamp can be rotated through up to 360 degrees about the vertical swivel bolt mounting and adjustably tipped within a wide angular range of 90 degrees or more about the horizontal pivot axis.
The swivel and pivot mountings may hold the lamp in an adjusted position by friction, by tightening of the pivot bolts, or in any other convenient way.
The lamp has a lead cable freely suspended therefrom and terminated with one part of a plug and socket, for enabling a power line to be connected thereto.
It is an advantage of employing two or more limpet magnets in vertical line that the lamp bracket is difficult to detach from its supporting girder or the like with a downward pull, as for example if the trailing power line is inadvertently fouled and tugged, but is relatively easy to detach with a sideways twist.
The lamp bracket may be made of steel or any other convenient structural material.
As mains power, typically a 110 V supply on a building site, for example, is available at the lamp, at least one electromagnet may be provided to hold the bracket, in addition to the at least one permanent magnet. The use of electromagnets alone is clearly undesirable, due to risk of damage and injury te personnel if, for example because of a power failure or the like, the lamp falls from its support when the electromagnets switch off.
From the foregoing description, it will be appreciated that the invention also extends to a lamp mounting/lar.p combination.
Thus, according to another aspect of the invention, there is provided a lamp mounting which comprises a bracket means supporting a mains-operable lamp thereon for angular adjustment about two axes at right angles, the bracket means including a base member having at least two permanent limpet magnets fixedly secured on its rear face, the arrangement being such that when the base member is attached to a magnetically susceptible support member with the permanent magnets arranged generally in vertical line, the axes about which the lamp is adjustable are disposed generally vertically and horizontally.
The lamp mounting in accordance with the invention is exemplified in the following description, making reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a complete lamp mounting including an
adjustably supported floodlight; and Fiaures 2 and 3 show modified bracket constructions.
Referring to Figure 1, the illustrated lamp mounting comprises a T-shaped bracket 10, for example of steel, having a vertical back limb 12 and a forwardly extending limb 14.
Limpet magnets 16, 18 are secured to the rear face of the back limb. A swivel bolt mounting 20 at the forward end of the limb 14 supports an upstanding U-member 22. A floodlight 24 is mounted between the upper ends of the arms of the
U-member 22 by means of pivot bolts 26. In use, the floodlight 24 is supplied with power through 2 trailing connecting lead 28 terminated with a socket 30 for enabling its connection to a mains power line.
The lamp mounting of Figure 1 is depicted in the orientation in which it is intended to be magnetically attached to a girder or other magnetically susceptible support member, more especially but not exclusively on a building site.
The lamp can be swivelled through 360 degrees about the vertical pivot axis defined by the mounting 20 and tipped through a range of 90 degrees or more about the horizontal pivot axis defined by the mounting bolts 26. The lamp can be maintained in a chosen position of adjustment due to friction in the pivot mountings or by tightening the mounting bolts.
When magnetically attached to a support in the orientation shown, the lamp is readily detachable by a sideways twist but is not readily pulled down with a vertical tug, for example an inadvertent tug on the trailing power line.
Figure 2 shows a modified mounting bracket again of a Tshape, with a vertical limb 32 carrying three limpet magnets 34, 36, 38 in vertical line. The forwardly extending limb 40 is braced by a strut 42.
Figure 3 shows another modified mounting bracket. This bracket is of L-shape, with two limpet magnets 44, 46 on its vertical limb 48. The horizontal limb 50 extends forwardly from the bottom end of the vertical limb 48.
It will be appreciated that various modifications of the above described arrancement are possible within the scope of the invention. For example, the bracket means may include a back support plate carrying a two-dimensional array of permanent magnets. It is also practicable te devise a bracket means for adjustably carrying more than one floodlit or other lamp.
