Abstract

The hoe comprises a body (1) for a handle to fit, a blade and stem (2), and a hinge bolt unit (3). The blade stem fits between lugs on the underside of the body and is fixed by a hinge bolt passing through the lugs and stem. Thus fitted the stem is below the body and the blade is at the bottom of the stem. The blade is the working part of the hoe. The hinge allows the blade and stem an angular movement so that in the push position the hoe is a push hoe and when the blade and stem are moved the other way the hoe assumes the draw of Dutch hoe position. The hinge is a friction fit and eliminates slackness. When the hoe is moved in the desired direction, pushed or pulled, the blade immediately assumes the correct position for use. <IMAGE>

Description

A DUAL PUM'OSE GARDEN llOE The invention relates to a hoe for use in gardens, cultivated soil, shrubberies, and horticulture, where the aim is to reaove or kill weeds and cultivate the soil.
Generally two types of hoe are used, one is a push hoe and the other is a draw or Dutch hoe.
Both types of hoe do the Job required as far as their design allows. But for complete garden cultivation and removal of weeds both types of hoe are required. however to work the soil using two hoes is awhçard and time consuming. One hoe is use while the other hoe lies on the ground waiting use. One is put down, the other picked up for use and visa versa.
The hoe described here will remedy the drawbacks of using two hoes - aslit is immediately avxlilahle for use as a draw hoe or as a push hoe.
When in use as a draw hoe and then the user requires the push hoe modes this is simply achieved by pushing the hoe blade into the soil so that the blade is moved into the push hoe position. Hoeing can be done without the blade moving about in the particular mode chosen, due to the friction fit of the blade stem in the hinge.
When the draw hoe position is required the user pulls the blade into the soil and this pulls the blade into the draw hoe position.
The body (1) is a hollow tube which will accept the handle. One end is blanked off and two lugs are on the underside of the body. The blade (2) has a stem which is at 90 degrees to the top surface of the blade. The stem of the blade fits between the lugs on the body and both parts have holes to accept the hinge bolt (3).
Thus the blade and stem are hinged at the lugs on the hoe body, such that an angular movement is allowed so that the push hoe is at one end of the movement and the draw hoe at the other end of the movement.
The hinge bolt is fitted with a tab washer so that the bolt cannot slacken off with movement of the blade and stem on the bolt.
A nyloc nut secures the hinge bolt and provides adjustable friction fit to the stem between the lugs of the body. The adjustable friction fit allows the user to decide the tightness of the hinge joint for his own use.
All parts are stainless steel and cannot rust, neither can tie hinge seize up through neglect.

Claims (3)

  1. The hoe is basically three parts, (1) is the hoe body which accepts the handle.
  2. (2) is the blade and stem, the blade being the working part of the hoe.
  3. (3) is the hinge bolt unit, comprising hinge bolt, tab washer and nyloc nut.
The blade stem fits between the lugs on the underside of the body and hinges on the bolt which fits through the lugs. The tab washer restrains the bolt head so that it cannot turn due to the blade stems angular movement on the bolt. The nyloc nut tightens the lugs of the body onto the stem to provide the required friction fit.
The nyloc nut resists shock and vibration so it cannot slacken off.
