Abstract

A cover for a container 21a of paint is provided with an aperture 20 providing one or more straight edges 24 so that the side of a brush can be drawn or stroked over the edge 24 to remove excess paint thus reducing the likelihood of drips. The paint may flow into recess 21. The cover may initially have no aperture but be made, e.g. of plastics, with lines of weakening to enable portions to be pressed in to form the aperture (Figure 4). The cover has a peripheral groove for engaging a rim 14 of a container. The cover is preferably additional to a removable lid for the container. <IMAGE>

Description

CONTAINERS MED CONTAINER CLOSURES AND COVERS This invention relates to container covers and closures and containers having such covers and closures.

According to this invention a closure or cover for a container for material to be applied has or is adapted to provide an aperture enabling in use entry into the container by a brush or other applicator when the cover or closure is associated therewith.

The closure or cover may have lines of weakening whereby one or more portions of the closure or cover can be deformed to provide said aperture.

The aperture may have opposed depending sides providing edges for engaging the applicator.

The closure or cover may have an upwardly facing annular recess spaced inwardly from the periphery and outwardly of the aperture.

The recess is for receiving said material removed from the applicator by stroking the applicator over the edge.

The invention includes a container containing such material and having such a cover or closure.

The material may be paint.

The invention may be performed in various ways and some specific embodiments with possible modifications will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a plan view of a cover for a container; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a plan view of another cover; Fig. 4 is a central section through the cover of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of another arrangement; Fig. 6 is a section on line 6-6 of Fig. 5; and Fig. 7 is a plan view of the cover in Fig. 5.

The cover 10 Fig. 1 is intended for use with a container 11, for example for paint 12 or other material, intended to be removed from the container by an applicator, for example a brush 13, or other means.

At present paint is sold in containers having a lid which when removed leaves an open mouth 14 essentially the full cross-section of the container apart from a narrow channel 15 at the rim. In use, the brush 13 is dipped into the paint in the container and may be brushed against the inner edge of the rim to remove excess paint. Paint enters into the channel and frequently flows over the rim and down the outside of the container, which is wasteful and messy. Also, if the container is partly or fully dislodged from an upright position, paint can readily flow out of the open mouth.

In the present case the cover 10, which may be moulded of plastics, has a peripheral skirt 17 and downwardly facing rim channel 18 arranged to removably embrace the rim of the container 11 for example with a firm friction grip or a snap action, the cover having a degree of flexibility in this connection. A central region 19 of the cover provides an aperture 20 enabling the applicator to enter the aperture to engage the paint.

The aperture 20 may preferably be of the same general overall shape, though of larger size, as section of the applicator; as shown rectangular for the brush.

The brush after dipping into the paint can now be brushed against one or more edges of the aperture 20 to remove excess paint. If paint flows over the side of the aperture 20, it is received in upwardly facing annular recess 21 and there is little or no tendency for the paint to flow down the outside surface 21a of the container 11.

The recess 21 is inwards of the periphery and outwards of the aperture.

The sides of the aperture 20 may have various shapes.

As shown the sides are formed by upstanding walls 22 having two inwardly and downwardly extending tongues 23 providing opposed edges 24 for engaging opposed sides of the brush.

The cover may be made initially with the aperture 20 present or the cover may initially have no aperture 20 but be formed with lines of weakening enabling portions to be bent from the general plane of the cover, to form an aperture. Thus in Figs. 3, W the cover or closure has lines of weakening 20a and aperture 20 is formed by pressing out area 30a to form portions 30, which may be inclined inwards somewhat as at 31 in the operative position. As shown, the cover 40 of Figs. 3, 4'has a central recess 41 surrounding the aperture 20 and bounded by an upwardly extending annular ridge 42. A further upwardly facing annular recess 43 is provided between ridge 42 and a peripheral ridge 44.

The cover or closure 10, 40 may also help to prevent loss of paint if the container is knocked over by providing a reduced area aperture, spaced from the rim.

The cover or closure 10, 40, if initially formed without aperture 20, could in some cases replace the present lid but preferably the cover or closure is additional to the lid, and may be provided as a separate item or be removably mounted over the lid on a container.

In a modification the cover is formed without aperture 20 and aperture 20 is obtained by removing a portion of-the cover.

The lid is preferably sized to correspond with standard size paint or like containers so that after removal of the normal container lid the lid 10, 40 can be snapped on to the container. The lid 10, 40 can conveniently be made from a suitable plastics.

Figs. 5 to 7 show another cover 50 having an external tab 51 for use in easing the cover off the rim 52 at the top mouth of container 53. As shown the rim is embraced by an outer peripheral skirt 54 and an inner wall 55. The lower end of wall 55 connects to a base wall 56 in which is formed aperture 57 which as shown is rectangular with one side edge 58 provided by the inner edge of a portion 59 bent downwards from a line 60 of weakening. Preferably as shown dotted the aperture 57 extends across base wall 56 to close to wall 55.

In some cases wall 56 may be near the top of wall 55 to provide a shallower recess for receipt e.g. of paint wiped from a brush or edge 58 or opposed edge 61.

As shown dotted at 70 Fig. 1, 7 the other side edges 71, 72 of the aperture 20, 57 may be provided by portions 73, 74 which are bent downwards. The aperture is in the base of an upwardly facing recess for receiving material removed from the applicator by stroking a side of the applicator across the edge 58 or 61.

ClAIMS

1. A closure or cover for a container for material to be applied has or is adapted to provide an aperture enabling in use entry into the container by a brush or other applicator when the cover or closure is associated therewith.

2. A closure or cover as claimed in claim 1 which has lines of weakening whereby one or more portions of the closure or cover can be deformed to provide said aperture.

3. A closure or cover as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, in which the aperture provides an edge for engaging the applicator.

4. A closure or cover as claimed in claim 3, in which the edge is straight.

5. A closure or cover as claimed in claim 3 or claim 4 in which the edge is formed on a depending portion.

6. A closure or cover as claimed in any of claims 3 to 5, in which the aperture provides opposed said edges.

7. A closure or cover as claimed in any preceding claim, having an upwardly facing annular recess spaced inwardly from the periphery and outwardly of the aperture.

8. A closure or cover as claimed in any of claims 1 to 6, in which the aperture is in the base of an upwardly facing recess.

9. A closure or cover as claimed in any preceding claim, including a peripheral groove for embracing a rim of a container.

10. A closure or cover for a container for material to be applied substantially as hereinbefore described with re-ference to and as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or Figs. 3 and 4, or Figs. 5 to 7, of the accompanying drawings.

11. A container containing material to be applied and having a closure or cover as claimed in any preceding claim.

12. A container as claimed in claim 11 in which the material is paint.
