Abstract

Worm wheels.-In worm wheels of the kind in which the teeth consist of rotatable pins or sleeves, pins 3, Fig. 1, are supported on ball bearings 6, 9 in radial recesses in the wheel rim 1, the balls 9 engaging a groove 8 in the pin and also the end of a tapered sleeve 10, which fits into the recess and is forced inwards to keep the pin in position by tapered pegs 13 driven laterally into the rim. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the pins are supported by roller bearings 23, 27 and by a rounded end 31, and are retained in position by a cross-peg 29 engaging a groove 28 in the pin. Plain bearings, one of which may be curved in axial section, may be used. The pin may be replaced by a sleeve of required tooth form turning loosely on a fixed radial pin secured by a cross-peg.
