Abstract
An exercise bar comprises means 1 which hook over the top jamb or architrave 7 of a door frame, a cross bar 3 connected thereto which spans the width of the door frame and abuts the door uprights, and a pull-up bar 6.
Description
EXERCISE BAR
This invention relates to an exercise bar.
A suspended horizontal bar is commonly used in physical exercise to strengthen muscles in the upper body. This exercise is carried out by gripping the bar, which is mounted at arms reach above the head, with both hands gripping the bar the body is lifted by bending the arms to a point where the head of the user reaches a point adjacent to the level of the bar, this exercise is commonly called a pull-up.
Although this exercise is popular, the facility is limited to the gymnasium. An exercise bar which could be used at home or at work would normally entail substantial fixings to the ceiling, brick wall, or door frame. A suitable fixing would normally resuld in considerable disturbance to existing decor and would limit the bar to be used in one specific area only.
According to the present invention a frame commonly of tubular steel construction locates in a door opening, the geometry of the frame is such that the horizontal bar which supports the body weight is set in a position above the level of the door allowing the frame to be easily fitted and removed without the need for permenant fixings or special tools.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be shown by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which :
Figure 1 Shows a section through a door opening, with an end view showing the position in which the frame is fitted.
Referring to the drawing, a tubular steel frame is shown as a fully welded construction, this could equally be in the form of a collapsable design to aid storage and transportation.
An angle iron bar 1 hooks over the top architrave of the door frame 7 giving partial support to the exercise bar.
The support bar 1 could alternatively be two seperate pieces connected one at each top end of curved arms 2 to give the same action.
The horizontal bar 3 is sufficient in length to bridge the door opening, and for the ends of the bar to rest securely against the two vertical sides of the door frame.
The curved members 2 connect the top frame support 1 with the horizontal bar 3. The connecting bars 5 are attached to the horizontal bar bar 3 these are sufficient in length to extend the height of 6 above the vertical height of the door opening.
The bracing bars 4 are connected between members 2 and 5 to eliminate any twisting action which may occur at the intersection of members 2 and 3.
The horizontal bar 6 is securely attached to the ends of connecting bars 5, the horizontal bar 6 should be of suitable length for the user to grip with both hands held at shoulders width apart.
As the downward pull is applied to bar 6 the angled member 1 is push downwards and inwards towards the wall 8 and at the same time the horizontal member 3 is pushed downwards and inwards towards the wall from the opposite direction.
The two opposing forces give sufficient grip on order that the full body weight can be suspended from the horizontal bar 6.
Claims (2)
1 An exercise bar comprises a frame which is suspended from a door
opening by one or more members which hook over the top
architrave of a door frame, a horizontal bar bridges across the
door opening to rest against the front face of the door opening
with two bars attached which connect to an additional horizontal
bar which is used to carry out exercises.
2. An exercise bar substantially as described herein with reference
to figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings.
