Abstract

229,805. Slingsby, W. Dec. 28, 1923. Ball-and-socket joints.-Relates to a construction of joint for flanged pipes, &c., which is so arranged that, whether the coupled pipes are in alignment or are inclined to each other, the connecting bolts are always subjected to pure tensile strains. In one form, in which the pipes k, e are provided with flanges h, c respectively connected by bolts a and nuts d, the heads of the bolts and the nuts are provided with convex surfaces f<1>, f, Figs. 5 and 6, adapted to engage concave recesses in the flanges, while the bolt holes of the flanges are tapered as shown in Fig. 1. In a modification, the convex surfaces f<1>, f may be formed on separate washers b, the bolt head and nut being plain; alternatively, both the convex and concave surfaces may be formed on separate coacting washers.
