Abstract
A lintel, pre-fabricated from two or more elements so that it has a camber. When the lintel is in service it is subjected to both transient and permanent loads which cause it to deflect. The amount of camber is pre-set to be equal, but opposite to the amount of deflection to be expected from the permanent load. When the permanent load is applied the lintel is caused to deflect but the deflection due to the permanent load is effectively zero. Thus the lintel may be constructed from materials which have a lower modulus of elasticity than would otherwise be allowable, eg. from webs 1 and upper and lower flanges 2, 3. <IMAGE>
Description
LOW MODULUS OF ELASTICITY LINTEL
This invention relates to a low modulus of elasticity lintel.
Lintels are a form of beam used to support the masonry above an opening in a wall. They are required to deflect not more than a limited amount and, of course, not to fail under the imposed load. The most commonly used material is steel which has a high modulus of elasticity. The use of materials with a low modulus of elasticity are generally uneconomic as they require the use of too much material to achieve the deflection requirement.
According to this invention a low elastic modulus lintel comprises linear elements which when assembled while one or more of the elements is deflected, form a cambered structural shape which will deflect to a linear form when a particular dead load is applied.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig 1 shows in perspective the lintel;
Fig 2 shows the individual elements.
Referring to the drawing the lintel comprises webs 1, a top flange 2 and a bottom flange 3 which are securely joined together by for example an adhesive. During the assembly of the elements the flanges are bent to a pre-determined deflection such that the assembled lintel has a camber. The amount of camber is predetermined to suit the permanent load to be encountered in service.
