Abstract
A cleaning composition for metals other than chrome comprises dilute hydrochloric acid, preferably in a quantity of less than 5% by volume. The preferred composition also contains less than 0.2% by volume of a detergent, less than 0.07% phosphoric acid and a trace of ammonia. The preferred method of applying such a composition to a vehicle wheel is by a brush which is used to agitate the composition in the course of application. After leaving the composition on the wheel for at least one minute, it is washed off with water.
Description
Cleaning composition
The invention relates to a cleaning composition for metals and in particular aluminium and aluminium alloys, especially for vehicle wheels.
Existing wheel cleaners have been found inefficient because they fail to remove common types of soiling, for example baked on brake dust.
The invention therefore aims to provide an improved metal cleaning composition and one which is not only efficient on vehicle wheels but also on plastics materials such as wheel trims.
According to the present invention, the metal cleaning composition, especially for vehicle wheels of aluminium or aluminium alloy but not for chrome-plated articles, contains diluted hydrochloric acid. It has been found that a content of less than 10% by volume of hydrochloric acid is desirable, preferably between 3% and 6%.
In one form of the invention, the cleaning composition contains, all by volume, less than 5% hydrochloric acid, between 0. 1% and 0.3%, preferably less than 0.2%, of a detergent, between 0.05 % and 0.08%, preferably less than 0.07%, of phosphoric acid and a trace of ammonia to act as a corrosion inhibitor, the remainder being water.
A preferred cleaning composition according to the invention will now be described with reference to the following example:
A cleaner for aluminium alloy wheels contains the following components by volume: 4. 18% hydrochloric acid, 0. 181% ofa nonionic detergent marketed under the proprietary name Synperonic, 0. 067 % phosphoric acid and 0.0016% ammonia, the remainderbeing water. The aforementioned non-ionic detergent Synperonic is said to be a 90% fatty alcohol 7 mole ethoxylate and has proved particularly suitable for the cleaner of the invention.
The cleaner is brush applied to the wheel to be cleaned and preferably agitated with the brush during application. Thereafter, the cleaner is left on for at least one minute and then washed off with water. It has been found that the preferred composition is particularly efficient on baked on brake dust, and not only on aluminium alloy wheels but also on lacquered wheels for cars and motor cycles and on plastics wheel trims. Even if the cleaner is left on for as long as half an hour, the composition will not harm the article being cleaned, as long as it is not applied to chrome-plated objects. It is also important that the composition should be applied by brush. If it were to be sprayed on, there is a risk of losing its effectiveness, quite apart from the danger of polluting the atmosphere and harming the user. However, if brushed on, the composition according to the invention is nonhazardous and will not act as an irritant.
During extensive testing, the composition has also proved useful on engine casings, various aluminum components for cars and motor cycles as well as on carburettors.
