Description
IMPROVEMENTS IN COCKSPUR HANDLES
This invention relates to improvements in cockspur handles for fasteners for windows, doors or the like.
The invention is particularly concerned with cockspur handles of the type mounted for pivotal movement on a base plate and having a projecting spur for co-operation with a keeper in a closed position of the handle to secure an opening wing of a window or door relative to a surrounding frame.
In order to accommodate variations in dimensions of different types and styles of windows and doors, it is already known to adjust the spur height of the known cockspur handles by changing the base plate on which the handle is mounted. This adds to manufacturing costs as a separate base plate is required for each spur height.
The present invention has been made from a consideration of this problem.
According to the present invention there is provided a cockspur handle for a fastener for a window, door or the like comprising a body member for mounting on a base plate for pivotal movement between open and closed positions, and a spur member mounted on the body member for co-operation with a keeper in the closed position of the handle to secure an opening wing of a window or door relative to a surrounding frame.
The invention enables the handle to be adapted for different spur heights by fitting the appropriate spur member to the body member. In this way, fasteners having a range of spur heights can be obtained in a cheap and simple manner using the same body member and base plate.
Preferably, the spur member and body member are provided with cooperating formations to locate the two members together. The formations may be of any suitable cross-section, for example one of the members may have a dove-tail groove arranged to receive a dove-tail rib on the other member. Conveniently, the formations are an interference fit to retain the spur member in position on the body member.
Advantageously, the body member has a nose, tongue or similar projection arranged to provide an abutment for the spur member and to overlie the spur member when the handle is mounted on the base member.
In this way, the spur member is partially concealed and does not detract from the aesthetic appearance of the handle.
Preferably, the spur member is a plastic moulding and the body member is made of metal, for example a zinc alloy die-casting, although it could be a plastic moulding.
Advantageously, a set of spur members are provided for selection and fitment respectively to the body member to provide a range of spur heights as required for different styles and types of opening wing and frame. For example, the handle may be adapted to a spur height of 11mm, 14mm, 17mm or21mm respectively.

With reference to the accompanying drawings, there is depicted a fastener 1 for a casement (not shown) supported in a surrounding frame (not shown) for opening movement about a vertical or horizontal axis.
The fastener 1 comprises a cockspur handle 2 mounted for pivotal movement on a base plate 3 provided with countersunk through holes 4 for receiving screws (not shown) for attaching the fastener 1 to the casement.
The handle 2 has a projecting spur 5 for co-operating with a keeper (not shown) mounted on the surrounding frame to secure and hold the casement closed. In known manner, the spur 5 may also co-operate with the keeper to secure and hold the casement in a partially open vent position.
The handle 2 comprises a metal body member 6 to which any surface finish may be applied as desired. The body member 6 is provided with a spigot 7 projecting from the underside that is rotatably received in a bore 8 in the base plate 3.
A counterbore 9 in the underside of the base plate 3 receives the free end of the spigot 7 which is peened over to secure the handle 2 to the base plate 3 for pivotal movement with washers 10 mounted on the spigot 7 providing bearing surfaces therebetween.
The body member 6 has an integral grip portion 11 by means of which the handle 2 is pivotal between the closed position shown in Figures 1 to 3 in which the body member 6 overiies the base plate 3 and an open position in which the body member 6 extends at an angle to the base plate 3.
The base plate 3 has a unitary shoot 12 secured in a pocket 13 in the underside of the base plate 3 by a cover plate 14. The shoot 12 is moulded from plastics material having resilient properties and has a striker head 15 supported by a pair of arms 16 to project through an opening 17 in the base plate 3. The striker head 15 is received in a recess 18 in the underside of the body member 6 to secure the handle 2 relative to the base plate 3 in the closed position.
The body member 6 has a stepped bore 19 parallel to and offset to one side of the pivot axis. The bore 19 opens into the recess 18 in alignment with the opening 17 in the base plate 3 when the handle 2 is in the closed position.
A barrel 20 is mounted for rotation in the inner end of the bore 19 and is biased outwards by a spring 21 acting between opposed shoulders 22,23 of the bore 19 and barrel 20 respectively.
The inner end of the barrel 20 projects into the recess 18 and is provided with a circlip 24 for retaining the barrel 20 in a raised position under the biasing of the spring 21 as shown in Figure 3.
The outer end of the barrel 20 is provided with a manually operable push button 25 that projects from a counterbore 26 at the outer end of the bore 19 in the raised position of the barrel 20.
The barrel 20 is axially movable against the biasing of the spring 21 by depressing the push button 25 to move the striker head 15 out of the recess 18 thereby releasing the handle 2 for pivotal movement from the closed position to the open position.
The body member 6 clears the striker head 15 in the open position of the handle 2 allowing the striker head 15 to project from the opening 17 in the base plate 3 due to the resilience of the arms 16.
The striker head 15 has an inclined upper face 27 and the lower side edge of the body member 6 co-operates with the side edge cf the face 27 as the handle 2 is moved from the open position towards the closed position to lower the striker head 15.
As a result, the body member 6 rides over the striker head 15 and the striker head 15 automatically engages the recess 18 in the underside of the body member 6 when the handle 2 reaches the closed position due to the resilience of the arms 16.
The barrel 20 is rotatable by means of a key (not shown) inserted into a keyway 28 in the push button 25 to a disenabling position in which axial movement of the barrel 20 by depression of the push button 25 to release the striker head 15 from the recess 18 is prevented by co-operating formations (not shown) of the barrel 20 and bore 19.
The handle 2 is locked in the closed position on removal of the key by a detent 29 that prevents rotation of the barrel 20 from the disenabling position and is released when the key is inserted preventing rotation of the barrel 20 by a non-matching key.
The handle 2 further comprises a plastics spur member 30 provided with a dove-tail groove 31 for reception of a dove-tail rib 32 on the side of the body member 6. The rib 32 is an interference fit to locate and secure the spur member 30 on the body member 6.
The body member 6 is provided at the upper end of the rib 32 with an integral nose 33 that provides an abutment for the spur member 30. The nose 33 is of complementary shape to and covers the spur member 30. In this way, fitment of the spur member 30 does not detract from the aesthetic outward appearance of the handle 2 when fitted to the base plate 3.
The spur member 30 has a flat spur surface 34 that projects from the side of the body member 6 and is engageable with the keeper in the closed position of the handle 2. Typically the keeper will be a wedge plate having an inclined ramp face that is engaged by the spur surface 34 as the handle 2 approaches the closed position and leads to a flat surface that is engaged by the spur surface 34 in the closed position of the handle 2. As shown, the spur surface 34 is provided with angled lead-in faces 35 on each side to assist initial engagement with the keeper.
The spur member 30 is retained in position by engagement with the keeper and is provided with a rectangular boss 36 that is received in a complementary blind hole 37 in the underside of the nose 33 to prevent the spur member 30 twisting when the spur surface 34 engages the keeper.
The spur height can be adjusted to accommodate variations in the dimensions of different types and styles of casement and surrounding frame by changing the disposition of the spur surface 34 with respect to the body member 6 by selection and fitment of an appropriate spur member 30.
For example, Figures 6 and 7 show a set of four spur members 30a,b,c,d for fitment of any selected one to the body member 6 with spur surfaces 34a,b,c,d respectively arranged to convert the handle 2 to spur heights of 21 mum, 17mm, 14mm and 11mm as desired.
As will be understood, the same body member 6 can be assembled with different spur members to adjust the spur height without changing the base plate 3 on which the handle 2 is mounted.
By this simple provision of the spur member 30, and the use of common components for the body member 6 and base plate 3, manufacture of fasteners having any desired spur height can be achieved in a cheap and simple manner.
It will be understood that the invention is not limited to the embodiment above-described. For example, the spur member may be located and retained on the body member by any suitable means.
Any suitable means may be provided for latching andlor locking the handle relative to the base plate in the closed position. Alternatively, such latching and/or locking means may be omitted.
The handle may be adapted for operating a tilt/turn mechanism and/or a locking mechanism such as an espagnolette, cremone or the like. For example, the spigot projecting from the underside of the body member may have a blind axial bore for reception of a spindle arranged to actuate the tilt/turn mechanism and/or locking mechanism on rotation of the handle.
The handle may be adapted for mounting on the opening wing or surrounding frame of a window, door or the like with the keeper being mounted on the other of the wing and frame.
Other modifications of the invented cockspur handle without departing from the principle of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art and are deemed within the scope of the invention.
Claims (11)
1. A cockspur handle for a fastener for a window, door or the like comprises a body member for mounting on a base plate for pivotal movement between open and closed positions, and a spur member mounted on the body member for co-operation with a keeper in the closed position of the handle to secure an opening wing of a window or door relative to a surrounding frame.
2. A handle according to Claim 1 wherein the spur member and body member are provided with co-operating formations to locate the two members together.
3. A handle according to Claim 2 wherein the formations comprise a rib and a groove.
4. A handle according to Claim 2 or Claim 3 wherein the formations are an interference fit.
5. A handle according to any one of the preceding Claims wherein the body member has a nose, tongue or similar projection arranged to provide an abutment for the spur member and to overlie the spur member when the handle is mounted on the base member.
6. A handle according to any one of the preceding Claims wherein the spur member is a plastics moulding and the body member is made of metal.
7. A handle assembly according to any one of the preceding Claims wherein a set of spur members are provided for selection and fitment respectively to the body member to provide a range of spur heights as required for different styles and types of opening wing and frame.
8. A handle assembly according to Claim 7 wherein the handle can be adapted to a spur height of 11mm, 14mm, 17mm or 21mm respectively.
9. A cockspur handle for mounting on a base plate for pivotal movement between open and closed positions wherein the handle has a separate spur insert for adapting the spur height of the handle.
10. A set of spur inserts for adapting the spur height of a cockpsur handle by fitment of a selected insert.
11. A cockspur handle for a fastener for a window, door or the like substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
