Description
GARAGE DOORS
This invention relates to garage doors.
Known garage doors are provided with a locking handle which operates a catch at the top of the door and is attached to the handle by a cable.
The cable is susceptible to tampering and presents a significant security risk.
According to the invention, there is provided a garage door incorporating at least one deadlock.
The deadlock gives improved security compared with known locking arrangements such as the afore-mentioned cable-release type mechanism.
In a preferred embodiment, the garage door is fitted with a pair of mortice deadlocks, one at each side of the door, giving improved security.
The or each mortice deadlock may be locked/unlocked either from inside or outside the garage.
An embodiment of the invention is now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a garage door in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged view of the region referenced II in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a partial cross-sectional view of the region shown in Figure 2; and
Figure 4 shows another embodiment of the invention.
Figure 1 shows a garage door 1 of the up-and-over type. The door comprises a leaf 2 mounted in a frame consisting of a horizontal cross member 3 and two, wooden upright members 4. Leaf 2 has a handle 5 which could be a fixed handle or a cable-release type handle of the kind already described.
In accordance with the invention, the door incorporates a deadlock giving improved security.
In the illustrated embodiment, the door is fitted with a pair of mortice deadlocks 10,11 which are positioned at opposite sides of the door, typically about 1/2 metre above floor level. An example of a suitable mortice deadlock is a 3",5 lever mortice deadlock, such as the 308
Mortice Deadlock marketed by the Applicant, and this is illustrated in the accompanying drawings. Alternatively, a cylinder-operated mortice deadlock could be used, such as the 351 Mortice Deadlock also marketed by the
Applicant. This may be fitted with either the known
Euro-Profile type cylinder or the known oval-type cylinder.
As best shown in Figures 2 and 3, each mortice deadlock 10,11 comprises a body 12 and a face plate 13. The face plate 13 is secured to a side flange 2' of the leaf using self-locking nut and bolt fasteners 14, with the body 12 projecting through a slot in the side flange to extend parallel to the front face of the leaf. The leaf is formed with suitable keyholes 15 fitted with escutcheon plates 16, which may be of the type having a cover plate.
Each upright 4 is formed with a recess in which the deadlock bolt 17 is received and the upright is fitted with a striker plate 18.
In the case of a garage door having a relatively large clearance between the leaf and each upright ( > 6 mm say), the striker plate 18 may be face-mounted on the upright 4, as shown in Figure 2. However, in cases where the clearance is smaller, the striker plate 18 may be rebated, as shown in Figure 4, and, if necessary, the surrounding woodwork may be relieved to allow unrestricted movement of the leaf relative to the frame.
As explained, a garage door fitted with mortice deadlocks in this way gives improved security as compared with existing locking arrangements used in garage doors, such as the afore-mentioned cable-release mechanisms which are susceptible to tampering.
An additional significant advantage of the described arrangement is that the mortice deadlocks can be locked/unlocked either from inside or outside the garage.
In further alternative embodiments of the invention, the uprights may be made of other materials or dispensed with altogether with the bolt recess being formed in the surrounding masonry.
Whilst the preferred embodiment has the deadlock body fixed to the leaf and the bolt recess in the upright, other arrangements will be possible. For instance, the deadlock body may be carried or located in the frame or surrounding masonry with the bolt recess located' in or on the leaf. The deadlock may be located at other positions on the leaf.
