Abstract

A locking bolt for an espagnolette mechanism has a T-shaped head 14 which, when the locking bolt is extended from a window leaf 22 into a fixed window frame 23, is rotated to lock the locking bolt to the frame in such a way as to resist separation of the leaf and the frame in a direction parallel to the length of the locking bolt. This prevents the locking bolt being rendered ineffective by such levering action. <IMAGE>

Description

CLOSURE LOCKING MECHANISMS The invention relates to closure locking mechanisms.
A closure such as a door or window comprises a fixed frame and a leaf hinged to the fixed frame and closable into the fixed frame. It is desirable for security reasons to lock the leaf to the fixed frame to prevent the leaf being pushed out of the frame and there are a wide variety of mechanisms available for doing this.
In one such mechanism, the drive rod is mounted on the leaf and is movable between an operative position and an inoperative position. For example, the drive rod can be part of a handle-operated espagnolette mechanism. The drive rod carries a locking bolt which, when the drive rod is in an operative position, projects from the leaf and engages with the fixed frame.
This engagement between the locking bolt and the fixed frame provides significant resistance to the leaf being pushed out of the fixed frame. It is not unknown, however, for such a locking mechanism to be rendered useless by inserting a lever between the leaf and the frame and levering the leaf away from the frame in the direction of movement of the locking bolt to such an extent that the locking bolt is removed from engagement with the frame. Once this has been done, the leaf can be readily opened.
According to the invention, there is provided a closure locking mechanism comprising a drive rod which is mountable on a leaf pivotable into a fixed frame and which is movable between an operative position and an inoperative position, a locking bolt carried by and movable with said drive rod, the locking bolt projecting from the leaf when the drive rod is in the operative position to engage with said fixed frame to lock the leaf to the fixed frame, the locking bolt including a device that co-operates with the frame when the locking bolt is engaged with the frame to prevent relative movement between the locking bolt and the fixed frame in a direction parallel to the direction of movement of the drive rod.
This engagement between the locking bolt and the fixed frame resists the levering movement referred to above and so is an added security feature.
The locking bolt preferably includes a shaped locking member which, when the locking bolt is engaged with the fixed frame, co-operates with the frame to prevent said relative movement.
The device preferably includes means to rotate the locking bolt as the locking bolt engages with said fixed frame to move said locking member into said operating position.
The rotating means preferably comprise a pin and a guide engaged by the pin, the guide and the pin being so arranged that, as the locking bolt engages said frame the locking bolt is rotated to move the locking member to the co-operating position.
The locking bolt preferably has a cylindrical outer surface with the groove being provided on said cylindrical surface and the pin being for mounting on the said leaf.
In this case, the groove preferably comprises a first axially extending portion traversed by said pin at the commencement of said movement of the locking bolt from the inoperative position to the operative position, a circumferentially and axially extending portion traversed by the pin as the locking bolt is engaged with said fixed frame to rotate the locking bolt to bring the locking member into co-operation with the fixed frame.
Preferably there is provided a second axially extending portion leading from said circumferentially and axially extending portion for receipt of the pin after said rotation.
The locking member preferably comprises a T-shaped head provided on the bolt, the limbs of the T being for co-operation with the fixed frame.
The following is a more detailed description of an embodiment of the invention, by way of example, reference being made to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a locking bolt mounted in an inoperative position in a window leaf, and Figure 2 is a side elevation of a locking bolt of Figure 1 in an operative position in which a locking member of the locking bolt engages a fixed window frame.
The locking bolt to be described is an attachment to an espagnolette mechanism of any suitable known kind. Such an espagnolette mechanism is shown, for example, in GB-A-2252359 and is the subject of our U.K. Patent Application No. 9303481.
The locking bolt is made of drawn brass and comprises a cylindrical body 10. At one end, the body is provided with a hole 11 for receipt of an end of a drive rod (not shown) of the espagnolette mechanism. The hole 11 may be threaded for screw engagement between the parts.
The other end of the body 10 carries a locking member 12 which is generally T-shaped and which includes a neck 13 and a cross-piece 14. The end of the cross-piece 14 is provided with a pip 15 for marking purposes during installation. The neck 13 is of smaller diameter than the body 10 so that there is an annular frusto-conical surface 16 between the body 10 and the neck 13.
The outer surface 17 of the body is provided with a groove 18 that has a first axially extending portion 19 leading from the frusto-conical surface 16 along the surface of the body 10 to a circumferentially and axially extending groove portion 20 which extends about 450 around the body surface. This in turn leads to a short second axially extending portion 21 which has a blind end.
The espagnolette mechanism is carried on a window leaf 22 which is hinged to a fixed frame 23. The locking bolt is mounted for sliding movement in a bore 24 provided in a surface 25 of the leaf 22; the leaf face 25 being parallel and closely adjacent to a frame surface 26 when the leaf 22 is closed into the frame 23.
A pin 29 is mounted in the bore 24 and engages the groove 18.
The frame surface 26 is provided with a keeper which has a rectangular entrance 27 and a widened interior 28.
The locking bolt is arranged so that the cross-piece 14 is in register with the rectangular entrance 27 when the locking bolt is in the inoperative position shown in Figure 1. In this position, the pin 29 is in the groove portion 19 adjacent the frusto-conical surface 16. As the locking bolt is moved by the espagnolette mechanism to the extended position shown in Figure 2, the pin moves along the axially extending groove portion 19 so constraining the locking bolt to axial movement. The pin reaches the circumferentially extending groove portion 20 as the cross-piece 14 has passed through the entrance 27. On engaging this portion 20, and on continued movement of the locking bolt, the bolt is rotated to engage the cross-piece 14 in the interior 28 of the keeper.
In this way, the locking bolt resists any attempt to lever the leaf 22 apart from the frame 23. This is thus an added security feature.
On retraction of the locking bolt by the espagnolette mechanism, a reverse movement occurs and the cross-piece 14 is disengaged from the interior 28 and passes out through the entrance 27.
It will be appreciated that there are a large number of variations that can be made to the embodiment described above. For example, the groove could be provided in a bush carried by the leaf 22 and the pin 29 be carried by the locking bolt. The engagement between the locking bolt and the fixed frame need not be by a T-shaped locking member 12; the locking member could be L-shaped or any other suitable shape.
Indeed, the retraction and extension of the locking bolt could operate a mechanism within the locking bolt that retracts and extends a locking member from the end of the locking bolt to disengage it and engage it with the frame.
The locking bolt need not be operated by an espagnolette mechanism; it could be operated by any suitable mechanism. The locking bolt need not be cylindrical; it could be square or any other suitable cross-section permitted by its mode of operation. The angle of rotation need not be 450; it could be any other suitable angle.
