227,831. Dictaphone Corporation, (Assignees of Carpenter, D. E.). Jan. 18, 1924, [Convention date]. Lined boxes; fittings, internal.-A carton for sound-record cylinders, glass ware, electric lamps &c. comprises a bottom end closure provided with a supporting-member or disc having a flexible or pliant edge portion which is engaged bv the end of the article and absorbs shocks. When the article is dropped into the carton the disc or its support or both are flexible and the removable top cap or cover may also be provided with a disc secured thereto, or the carton itself is dropped. As shown each of the closures 11, 12 is recessed inwardly so as to form an airpocket 19 between the closure and the stand upon which it rests, and the supporting-member or disc 22 is arranged on the central part 21 of the raised portion 18. The periphery of the disc forms with the container an internal annular airpocket 24 which retards the movement of the disc. The wall of the carton is made of several lavers of cardboard &c. and the disc is confined between the bottom and the end of one of the layers of the wall. The disc mav be formed of paper the covering being of a different quality from that of the main portion so as to counteract the tendencv of the disc to curl downwards under the weight of the article or other causes. For a sound-record cylinder 23 the carton is lined with flannel &c. 15 which stops short of the bottom of the carton and so provides a space 2 in which the dust removed from the cylinder collects: the lining is carried over the edge 17 of the carton.
