Abstract

A printed paper sheet 1 is folded into five by four concertina-like folds, 2a, 2b, 2c, 2d of alternate senses parallel to the long edge of the sheet, and folded into four by three concertina-like folds 3a, 3b, 3c of alternate senses parallel to the short edge of the sheet. The outermost surfaces of the folded sheet are protected by covers, 4 and 5, which may be of plastic. The sheet may carry a map or time-table, and may be arranged to fold into credit-card size. <IMAGE>

Description

Folded paper map or the like The invention relates to a folded printed paper sheet carrying information, which may include, for example, a map or street plan.

Maps, particularly street maps, are commonly provided by hotels, clubs and the like for the benefit of their customers. For convenience they are generally printed on a single sheet of paper which is folded into a convenient form for carrying in the pocket or handbag. Other printed documents, such as coach, rail or air timetables, sets of rules for the playing of games, or programs of meetings or conferences, may also be provided in such a form.

An object of the present invention, which is defined in the claims appended hereto, is to provide a compact and convenient format for such documents.

The invention will be further described with reference to the single figure of the accompanying drawing, which shows a sheet according to the invention, provided with cover sheets, and indicating the manner of folding.

Referring now to this figure, the sheet 1, which is rectangular in shape, carries printed information, such as a map, time-table or other useful data, and possibly also advertising material. This printed matter is not shown in the figure.

The sheet is folded concertina-wise by four folds, alternately downwards, forming ridge folds 2a, 2c, and upwards, forming valley folds 2b and 2d, parallel to its long dimension, so as to form a strip of the length of the original sheet and one-fifth of its width. This strip is again similarly folded into four by three folds, 3a, 3b,and 3c, again alternately downwards and upwards, parallel to its shorter dimension. Covers 4 and 5 are fastened by adhesive to the outermost panels of the folded sheet. These are slightly larger than the outline of the sheet in its folded form, and are of stiffer material, preferably of plastic, so as to protect the folded sheet from damage.

Preferably the dimensions of the sheet and of the covers are chosen so that the overall dimensions when folded and provided with covers correspond to the outline of a credit card, namely 85mm x 54 mm. A suitable size for the printed sheet before folding is therefore 320 mm x 250 mm, giving a folded size of 80mm x 50 mm, and so, when provided with covers of credit-card size, allowing the covers to project by a margin all round of about 2mm to protect the folds from abrasion.

With the pattern of folding of the present invention the covers will need to be attached to the same side of the sheet and at the ends of the longer edge adjacent to a ridge fold.

The sheet may be printed on both sides. If printed on only one side, this is preferably the side opposite to the covers, as this allows a greater printing area.

Claims

1. A folded paper sheet comprising a printed rectangular sheet of paper folded into five by four concertina-like folds of alternate senses parallel to the long edge of the sheet, and folded into four by three concertina-like folds of alternate senses parallel to the short edge of the sheet, the outermost surfaces of the folded sheet being protected by cover sheets of a material stiffer than the paper.

2. A folded paper sheet according to Claim 1 in which the four folds are carried out first to form a five-ply strip, which is then further folded as aforesaid.

3. A folded paper sheet according to Claim 1 or Claim 2 in which the printing on the paper sheet includes a map.

4. A folded paper sheet according to any preceding claim in which the covers are of plastic.

5. A folded paper sheet according to any preceding claim in which the covers extend beyond the edges of the paper when folded.

6. A folded paper sheet according to any preceding claim whose overall dimensions when folded correspond to the outline of a credit card.
