Abstract

A concrete building block has U-shaped channels and projections for interlocking with other, similar blocks. The blocks may be made in a shaped mould subdivided by members having U-shaped portions flanked by flat portions to mould channels and projections. <IMAGE>

Description

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOK MANUFACTURE OF CONSTRUCTIONAL ELEMENTS This invention relates to a method for producing constructional elements such as building blocks and in particular to blocks made from cementitious materials and having convex or concave keyways thereon in the form of ridges and/or channels the invention also relates to a mould for producing such blocks.
The cementitious materials used for producing the block will be made up by mixing cement fi llers such as sand or pulverized fuel ash water and ballast or granite.
The invention consists in a method of making constructional elements from cementitious materials having two major sides and four minor sides and having concave alld convex keyways thereon in the form of elongated ridges or channels shaped and dimensioned to fit corresponding convex or concave channels or ridges of adjacent similar elements where in a mixture of cement sand ballast granite and water is poured into an elongated mould shaped to required specification.
The constructional element preferably has a top side with three convex ridges the middle one being larger than the other two a bottom side with three matching concave ridges or channels at end face with three convex ridges or channels and an opposite end face with three concave channels.
One course of such building blocks will comprise of a line of blocks laid end to end ridges of each block fitting into the end channels of the next and forming continuous concave channels formed on the underside of the blocks in the next course laid above it (See diagram) The mould should be separable into as many parts as may be necessary to allow removal of the moulded blocks.
Each of the sides and end portions of the outer frame may be a separable member. Top could also be separate with an open 'sot.om end for filling the mould.
(See diagram) Figures IA IB IC and ID show a side elevation an end elevation a perspective view and a top plan view of a building block of the type which can be made by the process in accordance with the invention.
Figures 2A 2B and 2C show respectively a side elevation an end elevation and a perspective view and a top view of a base block for use in conjunction with blocks of Figure I.
Figures 3A 3B and 3C show respectively a bottom of a block fitting into the top of a block Figure 3B.

Figures 4A VB 4C 4D and 4E show respectively a side elevation an end elevation an empty mould a top and the finished product.
Figures 5A 5B 5C and 5D shows respectively a corner piece top view of a corner piece and an end view of a block.
Figures 6A 6B 6C and 6D shows respectively one convex end a corner block a concave end of a corner piece a birds eye view of corner piece and an interlocking view of a corner piece.
Figures 7A 7B 7C and 7D shows respectively a side elevation a perspective view and a top plan view an end view of a building block made by the process of the invention with concave and convex ridges at each end as well as the top.

  1. I. A method of making constructional elements from an cementitious material having two major sides and four minor sides and having keyways thereon in the form of elongate ridges or channels shaped and dimensioned to fit corresponding channels or ridges of adjacent similar elements wherein a mixture of cement a filler such as sand ballast or granite and water is poured into an elongate mould shaped and dimensioned to accommodate an elongate body of cementitious material of uniform cross-section of a length to form a plurality of said constructional elements and having ridges or channels extending along a longitudinal inner surface thereof and wherein there is interposed between adjacent elements prior to hardening thereof dividing means the cross-section of which comprises a U-shaped central portion flanked on either side by a flat portion whereby channels are formed in one said element and ridges are formed on the other.
  2. 2. A method according to claim I wherein the mould has ridges along one longitudinal inner surface and channels along an opposite surface to form respective channels and ridges along opposite minor sides of the moulded body.
  3. 3. A mould for the manufacture of building blocks substantially as herein described with reference to Figure I of the accompanying drawings.
    3. A method according to claim I or claim 2 wherein the said dividing means comprises at least one divider extending across the mould itself whereby the cementitious mixture is divided into a plurality of constructional elements as soon as it is poured into the mould.
    4. A mould for the building blocks by a methad according to claim 3 comprising an outer frame separable into at least two parts said outer frame comprising a pair of opposed elongate side portions and a pair of opposed end portions two side portions and spaced from the two end portions wherein one said side portion and one said end portion each have an inwardly facing moulding surface with central longitudinal ridges flanked by a pair of logitudinal flat surfaces wherein the other end portion each have an inwardly facing moulding surface with central longitudinal channels flanked by a pair of longitudinal flat surfaces 1 and wherein the or each dividing member has a projecting central portion at one end to fit into the central channel of one side portion and a recessed centralportion at the other end to accommodate the central ridges of the other side portion the cross section of the or each dividing member having a central U-shaped portions flanked on either side by straight portions.
    5. A mould according to claim 4 wherein the dividing members are separable from the outer frame parts.
    6. A mould according to claim 5 wherein lugs or pins are provided on the inward-facing moulding surfaces of the side portions of the outer frame. for easy withdrawal.
    7. A method according to claim I substantially as herein described with reference to Figure I.
