Abstract

A security device which incorporates a non-volatile electronic "tag" which can be programmed with a PIN number and is capable of being read by a reader on an automatic teller. The electronic tag can be hidden in a personal artifact e.g. finger ring, watch, pendant or key, which is presented to the automatic teller for reading, either instead of a conventional manually inserted PIN or in addition to the conventional PIN.

Description

DESCRIPTION SECURITY DEVICE The present invention is concerned with a security device which has particular application in connection with banking cards.
The fraudulent use of banking cards is increasing , > rapidly and becoming more and more sophisticated.
Conventional banking cards have a magnetic strip which encodes the card number and a separate personal identification number (PIN) which is entered into the automatic teller by the user. A computer in the automatic teller then checks the PIN with the card number and, if they match, the transaction can proceed.
There are several potential methods of fraudulent use, most of which involve stealing the card and obtaining the PIN number by theft, by surveillance of the automatic teller, tampering with mail etc. In particular, the users of so-called gold or platinum (high value) cards tend to be targeted.
It is the principal object of this invention to substantially reduce, if not eliminate completely, the risk of this fraud.
The invention takes advantage of the availability of modern non-volatile electronic tagging circuitry and in particular, circuitry which can be programmed with, for example, a PIN number and then capable of being read by a reader such as on the automatic teller.
Thus, in accordance with the present invention, there is provided a security device incorporating a nonvolatile electronic "tag" which can be programmed with a special PIN number, and is capable of being read by a reader on an automatic teller.
A typical circuit design for this purpose could be based on the circuits disclosed in U.K. Patents Nos.
1572342 and 2142172 or more recent fully integrated devices, such as those manufactured by Xicor and Hughes.
A particular preferred feature of the invention is that the electronic tag can be hidden in some personal artefact, such as a finger ring, watch, pendant, within a key and the like, which is presented to the automatic teller for reading, either instead of a conventional manually inserted PIN or in addition to the conventional PIN.
The security tag may, in some cases, be fashioned by the card provider, especially for the high value prestige gold cards, as a promotional feature.
In some embodiments, 'unauthorised' removal of the artefact from the wearer could also be designed to erase the PIN from the device, for example in unclasping a wrist watch variant, thereby rendering the circuit useless to a thief and preventing him/her from activating the automatic teller.

Claims (5)

1. A security system for preventing the fraudulent use of banking cards, comprising an automatic teller having a reader and a plurality of portable personal artifacts, each of which incorporates therewithin a respective non-volatile electronic "tag" circuit which is programmed with a special, individual PIN number and is capable of being read by said reader on the automatic teller to check whether to enable a transaction to proceed.
2. A security system as claimed in claim 1, wherein said personal artifact is a finger ring, a watch, a pendant, or a key within which said electronic "tag" circuit is hidden.
3. A security system as claimed in claim 2, wherein unauthorised removal of the artifact from the wearer is arranged to erase the PIN information from the electronic "tag" circuit.
4. A security system as claimed in claim 3, when appendant to claim 3, wherein, when the personal artifact is a watch, unclasping of the watch is arranged to erase the PIN information from said electronic "tag" circuit.
5. A security device incorporation a nonvolatile electronic "tag" which can be programmed with a special PIN number and is capable of being read by a reader on an automatic teller.
