Abstract

A baseplate 9 from a vibratory compaction plate has a liquid holding trough 1 formed into its leading edge, into which liquid flows. A cover 5 over the trough prevents liquid escaping other than by the correct path which is a series of outlets 4 in the edge of the baseplate wearing plate 2. Fixed to the cover 5 is a connection 7 through which the liquid is fed by gravity. The vibratory action of the plate causes the liquid to flow through the outlets 4 and onto the underside of the baseplate wearing plate 2. <IMAGE>

Description

LUBRICATING LIQUID APPLICATION SYSTEM FOR VIBRATORY COMPACTION PLATES This invention relates to a new system for applying lubricating liquid to vibratory compaction plates for use in compacting adhesive materials.
When vibratory compaction plates are used to compact adhesive materials eg: Bituminous Compounds it is necessary to provide a liquid layer between the machine and material to prevent the material from sticking to the machine.
Existing application systems spray, by various means, liquid in the form of droplets onto the material to be compacted, before it has been compacted.
Existing application systems pressurize the liquid to produce the spray of droplets. In the case of materials which are laid at higher than ambient temperature this can lead to premature cooling and a consequent deterioration in the finished quality of the material.
According to the present invention there is provided a lubricating liquid application system for vibratory compaction plates comprising a liquid holding trough formed into the baseplate of the machine, a series of outlets in one side of the trough through which the liquid flows onto the underside of the baseplate, a cover over the liquid holding trough either fixed in position or removable, the cover being used to prevent the liquid from escaping from the trough other than by the outlets in one side, the cover also being used to provide a connection for a means of feeding the liquid into the holding trough. The liquid is fed to the holding trough under gravity. The liquid within the trough is not pressurized and it flows through the outlets, in the liquid holding trough, onto the underside of the baseplate under the vibratory action of the plate. The liquid adheres to underside of the base plate and does not form droplets.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which.
FIGURE 1: shows in perspective, a baseplate incorporating the liquid application system, with the cover in place.
FIGURE 2: shows in perspective, a baseplate incorporating the liquid application system, with the cover removed to show the liquid holding trough.
FIGURE 3: shows, in cross section through the centre of the baseplate, the iquid application system.
FIGURE 4: shows in perspective, the underside of a baseplate incorporating the liquid application system.
Referring to the drawings, the lubricating liquid application system comprises the following: 1. A "V" shaped liquid holding trough 1 formed by bending the edge of the baseplate wearing plate 2 up and the baseplate top plate 3 down. The wearing plate 2 and top plate 3 are continuously welded together. A series of holes 4, of a diameter suitable to regulate the rate of flow of the liquid onto the baseplate, are drilled along the bent edge of the base plate wearing plate 2 to allow liquid to pass through to the outer surface of the baseplate.
2. A cover 5 over the liquid holding trough 1 to prevent any liquid within the trough escaping other than by the holes 4. The cover is fixed to the top plate 3 by suitable size bolts 6 so that it can be removed to enable cleaning of the liquid holding trough 1. A viscous sealing compound is applied between the cover 5 and the wearing plate 2 and between the cover 5 and the top plate 3 to stop any liquid escaping.
3. A connector 7 through which the liquid passes into the liquid holding trough 1. The connector 7 is attached to the cover 5 and a hole 8 of a specific size in the cover 5 regulates the flow of liquid into the liquid holding trough 1.
The lubricating liquid flows into the liquid holding trough 1 via the connector 7 from a holding tank placed elsewhere on the machine. The flow of liquid is controlled by a hole 8 in the cover 5 through which the liquid passes. At any time, the amount of liquid in the holding trough 1 is less than the volume of the holding trough 1. The vibratory action of the baseplate 9 causes the liquid in the holding trough 1 to vibrate and it flows through the holes 4 and onto the baseplate wearing plate 2. As the liquid is not pressurized it does not form droplets when it leaves the holes 4, but flows down the baseplate wearing plate 2 under the vibratory action of the baseplate 9 and the effect of gravity.

Claims (6)

2. A lubricating liquid application system for vibratory compaction plates as claimed in claim 1 wherein the cover is permanently fixed to the vibratory compactor baseplate.
3. A lubricating liquid application system for vibratory compaction plates as claimed in claim 1 wherein the cover can be removed from the vibratory compactor baseplate to allow access to the liquid holding trough.
4. A lubricating liquid application system for vibratory compaction plates as claimed in claim 2 or claim 3 wherein the cover is fitted with a connector which can be used as a means of feeding liquid into the liquid holding trough.
5. A lubricating liquid application system for vibrator compaction plates as claimed in claim 2 or claim 3 wherein the liquid within the liquid holding trough is at no time at a higher pressure than atmospheric pressure.
6. A lubricating liquid application system for vibratory compaction plates substantially as described herein with reference to figures 1 - 4 of the accompanying drawings.
