Abstract

A hinge guard 9 comprises an angle section plate 10 having one flange 11 that is located between a hinge leaf 2 and a side face 14 of a frame 3 and a second flange 12 that extends adjacent to the hinge 1 on an outer face 19 of the frame 3. Screws 4 extending through the hinge leaf 2 and flange 11 provide a concealed fixing for the plate 10 when the hinge 1 is closed and a transverse compression bolt 20 extending between opposite outer faces 19, 29 of the frame 3 through the flange 12 clamps the plate 10 to the frame 3. <IMAGE>

Description

HINGE GUARD The present invention relates to hinges.
Butt hinges for mounting a door are traditionally secured by screws which are concealed when the door is closed. It is possible, however, to remove the door by forcing the hinges using a suitable tool inserted between the door frame and the hinges.
The present invention has been made from a consideration of this problem.
According to the present invention there is provided a guard for a hinge comprising an angle section plate having a first flange adapted to be positioned between the hinge and a frame to which the hinge is secured in use and a second flange adapted to overlie an outer face of the frame adjacent to the hinge.
The invented hinge guard prevents the hinge being forced by insertion of a tool between the hinge and frame when a door or like closure mounted by the hinge is closed.
Advantageously, the plate is adapted to be secured to the frame by the same fastening means used to secure the hinge to the frame. For example, the first flange and a leaf or similar mounting part of the hinge may have one or more aligned holes for passage of screws or similar fastening means. Such concealed fixing prevents removal of the plate when the door or like closure mounted by the hinge is closed.
Preferably, means is provided for clamping the plate to the frame. Such clamping means may comprise a headed fastener such as a bolt arranged to extend through the second flange and the frame and secured on the opposed outer face of the frame, for example by a nut engaging a threaded shank portion of the bolt.
In this way, the frame is locally strengthened at the hinge location to resist further forced removal of the hinge.
Other features, benefits and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description of an exemplary embodiment depicted in the accompanying drawing wherein the single Figure is an exploded isometric view of an assembly embodying the invention.
In the drawing a hinge leaf 1 of a butt hinge 2 is secured to a jamb 3 of a timber doorframe by means of screws 4. The other hinge leaf 5 is secured by screws (not shown) to a door (not shown).
Each hinge leaf 1,5 has a cylindrical boss 6 that is received in a complementary cylindrical aperture 7 in the other leaf when the door is closed to prevent the door being removed if the hinge pin 8 connecting the leaves 1,5 Is removed. The number and/or shape of bosses 6 and apertures 7 may be chosen to suit different hinge sizes.
The jamb 3 is reinforced to strengthen the hinge fixing by means of a guard 9 comprising a steel plate 10 of angle section having a pair of flanges 11,12 extending normal to each other.
One flange 11 is seated between the hinge leaf 1 and the jamb 3 in a rebate 13 formed in the inner side face 14 of the jamb 3 and is secured by the screws 4 passing through aligned holes 15,16 in the hinge leaf 1 and flange 11.
The flange 11 is provided with clearance holes 17 aligned with the bosses 6 on the hinge leaves 1,5 which ensure that the boss 6 on the hinge leaf 5 does not foul the flange 11 and prevent the hinge 2 fully closing for right or left hand fitting of the guard 6 and hinge 2.
The depth of the rebate 13 is the same as the combined thickness of the flange 11 and hinge leaf 1 so that the hinge leaf 1 is flush with the inner side face 14 of the jamb 3.
The other flange 12 Is seated in a rebate 18 formed In the outer face 19 of the jamb 3 and is secured by a bolt 20 passing through a square hole 21 In the flange 12 and an aligned cylindrical through bore 22 in the jamb 3.
The depth of the rebate 18 is the same as the thickness of the flange 12 so that the flange 12 Is flush with the outer face 19 of the jamb 3.
The bolt 20 has a smooth domed, tamperproof head 23 that seats on the flange 12 and a shank 24 with a square-section portion 25 on the underside of the head 23 that is non-rotatably received in the hole 21 and a cylindrical portion 26 that is received in the through bore 23.
The cylindrical portion 26 is formed at the outer free end of the shank 24 with an external screw thread 27 to which a hexagonal nut 28 is secured on the opposite outer face 29 of the jamb 3 to clamp the plate 10 to the jamb 3 on tightening the nut 28. In a modification, not shown, a washer or plate maybe positioned on the shank 24 between the outer face 29 of the jamb 3 and the nut 28.
As will be understood, the plate 10 prevents the hinge 2 being forced by insertion of a tool between the hinge leaf 1 and inner side face 14 of the jamb 3 when the door is closed, and the concealed fixing of the plate 10 by the screws 4 prevents the plate 10 being removed when the door is closed even if the bolt 20 is released.
It will be appreciated that the invention is not limited to the embodiment above-described. For example, the plate 10 may be made of any material having sufficient strength for the intended application including metals, alloys, plastics, or composites thereof.
The plate 10 may be formed in any suitable manner and may be cut to the required length from stock of the desired anglesection formed by rolling, extrusion or other suitable method with the openings in the flanges 11,12 formed by drilling, pressing, punching or other suitable method.
Although the invention has been described with reference to a butt hinge, the invented hinge guard has application to different types and sizes of hinge for mounting doors, windows and like closures on a surrounding frame of timber, metal, plastics or composites thereof.
