Abstract

An adjustable wrench for loosening (or tightening) screwed components such as bottle tops, cans, oil filters and nuts in which one jaw, A, is a roller joined to a pinion B, travelling along a rack, C, in a handle D in such a way that pressure on the handle D in the direction indicated leads to rotation of the roller A in the direction indicated against an object to be loosened, E, causing the roller to press harder, and grip tighter. Another jaw F is provided which may be of any conventional shape and may be pivoted. <IMAGE>

Description

SELF-TTGHTENING ADJUSTABLE WRENCH This invention relates to a wrench for loosening, or tightening, screwed components such as the tops of bottles, cans, oil filters or similar objects, many of which are round and smooth, and difficult to grip.
The basic invention is shown in the drawing. The droller, A, is joined to a pinion,B, which travels along a rack, C. In use, the roller is pushed into contact with the object to be turned, E. In this drawing, as shown, upward pressure on the handle of the wrench, D, causes the roller, and with it, the pinion, to rotate anti-clockwise around the object, so that that the pinion, and therefore the roller also. travel towards the object, gripping tighter. Because the roller is much larger than the pinion, so is the pressure against the object much large than the pressure rotating the roller. ThP more the object resists being turned, the tighter will the roller grip.
The drawing shows a pivoted opposing jaw, F, which further assists in the gripping action, but any conventional shaped jaw could be used.

  1. CILAIM.
A self-tightening adjustable wrench in which one jaw is a roller joined to a Dinion travelling along a rack in such a way that any rotation of the roller and pinion which occurs whilst turning a nut or anp other screwed object causes the pinion, and therefore the roller, to travel towards, and therefore grip tighter, the object to be turned.
