Abstract
A disclosing tooth cleaning material comprising a tooth cleaning material in combination with a substance having a property of identifying plaque on teeth. The substance either highlights plaque on teeth by means of a colourant, or alternatively discloses plaque on teeth on application of a light source to the teeth after the substance has been applied.
Description
Disclosina Tooth Cleanina Material
This invention relates to disclosing tooth cleaning material for use in disclosing plaque remaining on teeth during the brushing process.
In the past, disclosing tablets have been known which are chewed before a person starts to brush their teeth.
Colourant in the disclosing tablets highlights the plaque on teeth which needs to be removed in order to avoid tooth decay and maintain dental care. Toothpaste is then applied to the teeth with a brush and the teeth brushed until all the colourant has been removed.
This has the disadvantage that it is time consuming and requires a certain level of discipline to use disclosing tablets regularly. Parents need to ensure that children use the disclosing tablets. Also, young children and toddlers may have problems chewing the tablets sufficiently for the tablet to work effectively.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a disclosing tooth cleaning material comprising a tooth cleaning material in combination with a substance having a property of identifying plaque on teeth.
Preferably, the tooth cleaning material is toothpaste.
The substance having a property of identifying plaque on teeth may be a colourant preferably in the form of a food dye.
Alternatively, the substance having a property of identifying plaque on teeth may highlight the plaque on teeth only on application of a light source to the teeth once the substance has been applied.
The substance may be combined in the tooth cleaning material and dispensed from a container.
Alternatively, the tooth cleaning material and the substance may be contained, prior to use, in two separate compartments of a container and combined on dispensing from the container.
Preferably, the two compartments of the container have a common aperture through which the tooth cleaning material and the substance are emitted, thereby inducing the combination of the substance with the tooth cleaning material.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a container for dispensing a disclosing tooth cleaning material, said container having two separate compartments, a first compartment containing a tooth cleaning substance and a second compartment containing a substance having a property of identifying plaque on teeth, the two compartments having a common exit through which the contents of the two compartments are dispensed.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only.
A disclosing tooth cleaning material is provided formed of toothpaste combined with a disclosing substance of a colourant in the form of a food dye. The tooth cleaning material is used in the same way as standard toothpaste by applying the material to a toothbrush and brushing the teeth. When the brushing action has started the material is spread throughout the mouth, and therefore around the teeth, and the colourant identifies plaque on the teeth by colouring it. Food dye which is used in known disclosing tablets colours the plaque but does not colour teeth which are free of plaque thereby allowing the plaque to be located.
Whilst the brushing continues, the toothpaste in the tooth cleaning material removes the plaque and in this way the progress of the tooth cleaning process can be monitored until all the plaque has been removed and no colourant remains on the teeth.
A second embodiment of the present invention is a disclosing tooth cleaning material in which a toothpaste or other tooth cleaning material, for example a mouthwash, is combined with a disclosing substance which disclosing substance is not visible to the human eye in natural or household artificial light.
The disclosing substance can then be seen by application of a particular light source to the teeth after brushing in order to highlight the areas of plaque remaining on the teeth. The light source could be in the form of infra-red light, intense light or a particular wavelength band of light. The light source can be applied by a handheld apparatus for use at home, or a fixed apparatus if used in a dental surgery.
This has the advantage that the toothpaste or other tooth cleaning material can be used without the requirement that the teeth are thoroughly cleaned in order to remove unsightly colour from the teeth. This is beneficial if the cleaning is being undertaken in haste.
The disclosing substance and the toothpaste can be combined and dispensed from a standard toothpaste dispenser or tube. Alternatively, the disclosing substance and the tooth cleaning material can be disposed in separate compartments within a container.
The separate compartments have apertures leading to a common dispensing exit at which point the toothpaste and disclosing substance combine on being applied to a toothbrush.
An operating means can be disposed on the container the operation of which can prevent or allow the exit of disclosing substance from the separate compartment thereby allowing the user to select whether or not to have disclosing substance combined with the toothpaste.
Modifications and variations of the above described embodiment can be adopted without departing from the scope of the invention, for example the disclosing colourant can be combined as a mouthwash and used prior or after brushing the teeth to ensure that all the plaque on the teeth has been removed.
Claims (11)
1 A disclosing tooth cleaning material comprising a
tooth cleaning material in combination with a
substance having a property identifying plaque on
teeth.
2 A disclosing tooth cleaning material as claimed in
Claim 1, wherein the tooth cleaning material is
toothpaste.
3 A disclosing tooth cleaning material as claimed in
Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the substance having a
property of identifying plaque on teeth highlights
the plaque upon application of the substance to
the teeth.
4 A disclosing tooth cleaning material as claimed in
Claim 3, wherein the substance is a colourant in
the form of a food dye.
5 A disclosing tooth cleaning material as claimed in
Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the substance having a
property of identifying plaque on teeth highlights
the plaque on teeth only on application of a light
source to the teeth once the substance has been
applied.
6 A disclosing tooth cleaning material as claimed in
any one of the preceding Claims, wherein the
substance is combined in the tooth cleaning
material and dispensed from a container.
7 A disclosing tooth cleaning material as claimed in
any one of Claims 1 to 5, wherein the tooth
cleaning material and the substance are contained,
prior to use, in two separate compartments of a
container and combined on dispensing from the
container.
8 A disclosing tooth cleaning material as claimed in
Claim 7, wherein the two compartments of the
container have a common aperture through which the
tooth cleaning material and the substance are
emitted, thereby inducing the combination of the
substance with the tooth cleaning material.
9 A container for dispensing a disclosing tooth
cleaning material, said container having two
separate compartments, a first compartment
containing a tooth cleaning substance and a second
compartment containing a substance having a
property of identifying plaque on teeth, the two
compartments having a common exit through which
the contents of the two compartments are
dispensed.
10 A disclosing tooth cleaning material substantially
as hereinbefore described.
11 A container for dispensing a disclosing tooth
cleaning material substantially as hereinbefore
described.
