Abstract
The video game machine comprises a casing (1, 2) shaped to be gripped at opposite ends by the hands of a player and containing video game control circuitry (3); game playing control keys (11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18, 19) positioned towards the opposite ends of the casing so as to be operable by the player when gripping the opposite ends of the casing; and a radio signal transmitter (21) provided on or in the casing for transmitting a game signal by radio transmission to a receiver for a television set This construction removes the need for wires between the control keys and the control circuitry, and between the control circuitry and the television set. <IMAGE>
Description
VIDEO GAME MACHINE
The present invention relates generally to a video game machine and in particular to a video game machine with game playing control keys built therein.
Video game machines usually comprise a host machine with at least a control set in electrical connection therewith via electrical wires. Signal lines are connected between the host machine and a television set to transmit a game signal to the television set and thus display the game program on the television screen. The control set provides communication between the host machine and the player. Generally, a control set comprises a casing on which a START key, a SELECT key, direction control keys and other function control keys are disposed.
Although the host machine and the control set are -electrically connected together, they are physically separated from each other. This makes the whole video game machine occupy a large space. Further, the connecting wires therebetween cause trouble when players are installing the machine and playing the video game.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a video game machine comprising: a casing for video game control means, game playing control keys positioned on the casing, and a radio signal transmitter provided on or in the casing for transmitting a game signal by radio transmission to a receiver for a television set.
By incorporating the control keys with the host machine casing, the total space occupied by the video game machine is reduced and the problems caused by the wires connecting the host machine to the control keys are eliminated.
By providing radio (i.e. wireless) communication with a television set to display the game program on the television, the problems caused by signal lines connecting the video game machine to the television set are eliminated.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, the video game machine comprises a host machine encased within a casing having a game cartridge slot, a power inlet, a radio frequency transmitter, a secondary joystick connector, a one/two player selection switch and/or an earphone socket as for a conventional video game host machine. However, the casing further comprises a direction control key, a reset key, a select key and/or a turbo key, a select key and a start key disposed thereon to serve as the conventional control set. The circuit for the control keys is incorporated in the circuit board of the host machine so as to provide a single unit video game machine.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description of a preferred embodiment taken in connection with the attached drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing a video game machine made in accordance with the present invention; and
Fig. 2 is fragmentary view, viewed from a different orientation, of the video game machine shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, wherein a video game machine in accordance with the present invention is shown, the video game machine comprises a cover piece 1 and a bottom piece 2 which together define a casing inside which a circuit board 3 (Fig. 2) which actuates a game cartridge (not shown) and
Initiates the game program of the game cartridge is mounted.
The cover piece 1 has two opposite end sides. On an area in the proximity of one of the two opposite end sides, a direction control key il, a reset key 18 and a select key 19 are mounted in a conventional way. On an area close to the other end side of the cover piece 1, action keys 12 and 13, turbo keys 14 and 15 and a start key 16 are mounted in a conventional way used to construct a conventional control set.
The size of the casing is suitable for a player to grip and hold with two hands, the left hand controlling moving direction of the game and the right hand taking suitable action in the game with the action keys 12 and 13, just as a conventional control set. This is similar to the arrangement and use of a conventional control set and no detail will be further given herein.
The casing of the present video game machine further comprises a lateral side surface connecting the cover piece I to the bottom piece 2. The lateral side surface has a plurality of openings to define a speed selecting switch 26, a one/two player selecting switch 27, a secondary joystick connector 28 and an earphone socket 29 (Fig. 1) and also a radio frequency signal transmitter 21 which transmits a game signal to a receiver (not shown) connected to the television set, a game cartridge slot 22 which is formed within a recess 23 suitable to receive and hold therein the game cartridge, and a power inlet 24 (Fig. 2). The arrangement of these openings and/or elements may be in a conventional form which is known to those skilled in the art or in any other suitable way to provide a handy and convenient disposition thereof.
From the above description, it is understood that the present invention provides a video game machine which incorporates the game playing control keys which are conventionally disposed as a control set on the casing of a host machine so as to reduce the space that is occupied.
It is apparent the circuit board 3 should be modified to provide thereon electrical contacts for the game playing control keys or to provide thereon signal generation devices corresponding to these control keys. This, however, can be done easily by those skilled in the art and thus no discussion will be given herein in order to simplify the description and illustration of the present video game machine. It is also apparent that although the invention has been described in connection with a preferred embodiment, those skilled in the art may make changes to certain features of the preferred embodiment without departing from the invention.
