Abstract
Apparatus for removing dust from e.g. the floor surrounding wood working machinery comprises an inlet nozzle 15 and an ejector 1 which discharges directly into the suction duct 20 of an extraction apparatus, via which the dust laden air is conveyed to a filter or similar means. The ejector may be fed by compressed air, gas, or some other fluid, including liquids. <IMAGE>
Description
Tie.e - S tion apparatus for cleaninq or other purposes
This invention relates to suction apparatus and has for its object to provide simple and effective apparatus primarily for the removal of dust, dirt or the like, especially, but not exclusively, for use in conjunction with dust extraction apparatus, e.g. as employed for dust removal from machinery such as wood working machinery and in other industrial applications.
Whereas dust is largely removed from the operative part or parts of machinery or similar equipment by one or more hoods of dust extraction apparatus, some residual dust falls onto the machinery and surrounding floor area and the apparatus according to this invention is particularly effective in enabling such residual dust to be readily cleaned up as and when necessary.
This and other practical advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description.
According to the invention suction apparatus more particularly for cleaning purposes comprises a hollow body having a suction inlet and a discharge outlet and also provision for directing compressed air or a like medium along the hollow body so as to create suction at the inlet and to direct sucked in dust or other matter to the outlet. The hollow body preferably has an internal venturi formation through which the compressed air or the like is directed for creating a high degree of suction at the inlet.
A practical form of the apparatus for suction or vacuum cleaning is shown by way of example in the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a cross sectional side elevation of the suction
cleaning apparatus or unit, and
Figure 2 shows the unit used in conjunction with dust
extraction apparatus.
Referring to Figure 1 the suction cleaning unit 1 comprises a hollow or tubular body 10 having a suction inlet 11 and a discharge outlet 12. That end of the tubular body 10 adjacent the inlet 11 receives within it a jet or nozzle 13 for directing compressed air along the tubular body 10 towards the outlet 12 in order to create suction at the inlet 11 and in a duct or pipe such as a flexible hose 14 communicating with it and having a dust pick up nozzle 15 at it's free end. The compressed air jet 13 can be conveniently connected at 16 to the usual workshop or similar compressed air line via an on/off control valve 17.
As shown the interior of the tubular body is provided with a venturi formation 18 whereby, due to the increased velocity of air flow through the construction or throat of the venturi formation, a high degree of suction is created at the inlet 11, and also a high rate of discharge or ejection of dust laden air at the outlet 12. As will be seen in the drawings the jet 13 is arranged to direct air under pressure into the commencement of the venturi formation 18 but may be otherwise suitably positioned in relation to it.
The unit 1 can be conveniently used in conjunction with dust extraction apparatus 1, as shown in Figure 2, by connection of the outlet 12 into the suction duct 20 of the extraction apparatus 2 in which latter dust is collected and also suction created in the duct 20 by the action of a fan drawing air through a filter or by other suitable means.
The unit 1 can be conveniently used by a machine or other installation in cleaning dust from it by means of the flexible hose 14 and pick up nozzle 15 and also from the surrounding floor area and any adjacent equipment or goods. Thus the machinery etcetera can be readily maintained in a clean condition especially where the presence of accumulated dust is hazardous and/or contrary to health.
As will be appreciated from the foregoing, apparatus or a unit according to this invention is capable of use in a wide variety of cleaning or other suction applications such as the movement or drawing of water or other fluids.
Whereas for most practical applications compressed air is the convenient medium for use in the unit in creating suction at the inlet, other suitable fluid i.e. a gas and/or liquid may be used as necessary.
Various modifications may be made to the apparatus within the scope of the invention herein defined.
Whereas the invention has been described primarily with respect to a suction apparatus for cleaning purposes it can also be used for example for pneumatic conveying of particulate material.
Claims (6)
1 Suction cleaning apparatus comprises a hollow body having
a suction inlet and a discharge outlet and also provision
for directing air or a like medium under pressure along the
hollow body towards the discharge outlet so as to create
suction at the inlet and to direct sucked in dust or other
matter to the outlet, which outlet is connected, or adapted
to be connected to the suction system of dust or like
extraction apparatus.
2 Suction cleaning apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the
discharge outlet is connected, or adapted to be connected,
to a suction duct of dust or like extraction apparatus.
3 Suction cleaning apparatus according to claim 1 or 2
wherein the suction inlet is connected or connectible to a
dust or like pick up nozzle such as by flexible hose
connection.
4 Suction cleaning apparatus according to claim 1, 2 or 3
wherein the provision for directing air or a like medium
under pressure along the hollow body towards the discharge
outlet comprises a jet for directing compressed air or a
like medium within the body towards the outlet in order to
create suction at the inlet.
5 Suction cleaning apparatus according to any of the
preceding claims wherein that part of the interior of the
hollow body directed towards the discharge outlet includes
a venturi formation through which the air or like medium is
directed under pressure to the outlet for creating a high
degree of suction at the inlet.
6 Suction cleaning apparatus connected, or adapted to be
connected, to dust or like extraction apparatus when
substantially as herein described with reference to the
accompanying drawings.
