Abstract

226,960. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., and Jewitt, D. E. Dec. 17, 1923. Driving-arrangements for screw propellers.- A direct current systern of electric propulsion for multiple screw ships comprises a single power supply and propeller motors in a series circuit in which a full load current is maintained automatically under manoeuvring conditions. Two propeller motors 1 are in the circuit 3 with a generator 2. The field 4 of each motor is excited from a supply 5 provided with a reversing potentiometer type rheostat 6. These rheostats are operated by a motor and protected by apparatus described in Specification 202,117. The field 7 of the generator is also excited from the circuit 3 and is provided with a rheostat 8 operated by a motor 10 controlled bv a relay 9 in the main circuit 3. Instead of the motor, a solenoid or equivalent controlling device may be used. The relay automatically maintains a full load current in the series system, a tendency to a rise or fall in the current resulting in the relay putting the motor 10 in action to control the rheostat 8 and thus reduce or increase the field 7 and consequently the generator voltage.
