Description
APPARATUS FOR PLAYING A GAME
This invention relates to apparatus for playing a game.
Games such for example as billiards, snooker, pool and table tennis are played on purpose built tables.
When players tire of playing a game, the purpose built tables usually remain unused because the tables cannot serve any other function. The purpose built tables are expensive items and they take up large areas. It is thus not desirable that the purpose built tables should remain idle for long periods when they are not in use.
It is an aim of the present invention to reduce the above mentioned problem.
Accordingly, the present invention provides apparatus for playing a game, which apparatus comprises a playing surface member which bears a predetermined game design for playing a predetermined game, the playing surface member being such that it is removably supportable on support means whereby different playing surfaces members for playing different games are removably supportable on the same support means.
The support means will usually be a table such for example as one of the above mentioned purpose built tables. Other types of support means may however be employed. The apparatus of the present invention is advantageous in that a household may have a plurality of the playing surface members with each of the playing surface members bearing a different predetermined game design. Thus lots of different games can be played on the same single support means so that the support means is able to be used more often than it would be if it were only for playing one game. With the apparatus of the present invention, it is simply necessary to change the playing surface member. There is no need to alter the construction of the support means and this is particularly advantageous when the support means is in the form of an existing purpose built table which can thus easily be adapted for playing other games simply by placing one of the playing surface members on top of the table.
The playing surface member may be a playing board.
The playing board may be a foldable playing board or a non-foldable playing board.
The playing board may include playing holes.
The apparatus of the invention may include removable playing pieces having peg members for fitting in at least some of the playing holes. The removable playing pieces may be for adding to the predetermined game design.
In an alternative embodiment of the invention, the playing surface member may be a fabric member which requires to be pulled taut for playing the game.
The fabric member may be a stretchable fabric member, or it may be a non-stretchable fabric member.
The fabric member may include fixing means for retaining the fabric member taut during playing of the game. The fixing means may be ties. Other types of fixing means such for example as clips may be employed.
When the playing surface member is the fabric member, then the apparatus of the invention may include removal playing pieces for adding to the predetermined game design. The removable playing pieces may be stickon removable playing pieces.
The apparatus of the invention may be such that the playing surface member has a baize playing surface.
Other materials may be employed as may be suitable and appropriate.
The predetermined game design may be provided on the playing surface by printing, painting or any other suitable and appropriate means.
The apparatus of the invention may include the support means.
The support means will usually be a table. The support means may be a snooker table, billiards table, pool table, table tennis table or a dining table.
Generally, any suitable and appropriate type of table maybe employed.
If desired, the support means may be a table framework. The table framework may have a recessed area for receiving the playing surface member when the playing surface member is a playing board, or for receiving a platform member when the playing surface member is a fabric member, the fabric member being able to rest on the platform member,
Generally, the support means may be any suitable and appropriate type of support means. The support means may be collapsible or it may be rigid.
The game apparatus may include game playing members appropriate to the predetermined game. Thus, for example, the game apparatus may include cues and balls for a golf type game. Generally, any suitable and appropriate type of game playing members may be included.
The support means and the playing surface member may both be of any suitable and appropriate size. The support means and the playing surface member may also be made of any suitable and appropriate materials including wood, metals and plastics material.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows first apparatus of the invention in use;
Figure 2 is an enlarged view of part of the apparatus shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 shows second apparatus in accordance with the invention; and
Figure 4 shows a support means for supporting a playing surface member.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, there is shown apparatus 2 for playing a golf game. The apparatus 2 comprises a playing surface member 4 which bears a predetermined game design for playing a predetermined game of golf. The playing surface member 4 is such that it is removably supportable on support means in the form of a billiards table 6. Because the playing surface member 4 is removably supportable on the table 6, it can easily be removed from the table 6 and replaced by different playing surface members for playing different games. Thus one table 6 can be used for supporting a plurality of different playing surface members for playing different games so that the table 6 can be more fully utilised than would be the case if it were just used for playing billiards.
The playing surface member 4 is a playing board.
The playing board is a non-foldable playing board but it may be a foldable one if desired. As can be seen, the playing board includes playing holes 8.
The apparatus 2 includes removable playing pieces 10. As shown most clearly in Figure 2, the removable playing pieces 10 may each have a peg member 12 for fitting in one of the holes 8. The removable playing pieces 10 are for adding to the predetermined game design as will be described in more detail hereinbelow.
Referring now to Figure 3, there is shown a playing surface member 14 which is a fabric member which requires to be pulled taut for playing a game. The playing surface member 14 is a stretchable fabric member which is made of baize. The stretchable fabric member may be made of a material other than baize. If desired, the fabric member may be a non-stretchable fabric member.
The playing surface member 14 is provided with fixing means in the form of ties 16. The ties 16 are for retaining the playing surface member 14 taut during the playing of a game.
The playing surface member 14 is provided with a predetermined game design (not shown) for playing a predetermined game. The predetermined game design may include hole markings 18. The playing surface member 14 may also include cueing-off members 20.
Figure 4 shows support means in the form of a table framework 22. The table framework 22 comprises a top frame portion 24 supported on legs 26. The legs 26 are held in position by struts 28. The struts 28 can be such as to enable the legs 26 to fold if desired.
The top frame portion 24 is provided with a rebate portion 30 for receiving a playing surface member 4 such as that shown in Figure 1 which is a rigid playing board, or for receiving a playing surface member 14 such as that shown in Figure 3 which is a stretchable fabric member. If the playing surface member 14 shown in
Figure 3 is used, then this will usually be supported on a platform member (not shown).
In order to promote a full understanding of the present invention, the apparatus of the invention will now be described in connection with the playing of a specific game.
The game is called "Eighteens" and it is similar to the game of golf. Eighteen holes 18 are drilled through the playing surface member 4 shown in Figures 1 and 2 in strategic positions. The holes 18 are the housing positions for a ball in play. The ball in play only rests in the holes. The ball does not pass through the holes 18 because of the table 6 below the playing surface member 4.
The game is played with eighteen playing pieces 10 in the form of odd-shaped obstacles. The obstacles cover the holes 18. Only one of the holes 18 is exposed at a time.
The object of the game is to get the ball in play into the exposed hole 18, via an obstacle course.
The ball in play commences from a fixed starting position 31. The ball is moved by being struck by another ball called a cue ball. The cue ball commences from selected marked position 33. This selected marked position has an identical number to the hole being played.
Throughout the game, each stroke made by a cue onto the cue ball is counted until the ball in play rests in the chosen hole. Should either the ball in play or the cue ball drop into a pocket 32 during play, then that ball will be replaced on its starting position and this will count as a stroke.
The apparatus 2 also has playing pieces in the form of permanent obstacles 35 fixed on the playing surface member 4. These permanent obstacles are placed in strategic positions. Different playing surface members 4 will have different strategic layouts. Each playing surface member 4 will have its own name for a particular course, to allow for competitions to arrive at the best score per course.
Stick-on numbers 37 are interchangeable at the cue ball marked starting positions. This allows each course to be varied.
The above described game played on the -rigid playing board which forms the playing surface member 4 can also be played on the stretchable fabric member which forms the playing surface member 14 shown in
Figure 3. With reference to Figure 3, the holes 18 are just marked holes and they do not extend through the playing surface member 14. The ball in play passes over the markings for the holes 18. The obstacles are stickon obstacles.
The table framework 22 is for those persons who do not have an available table such as the table 6. The pockets 32 may be dispensed with if desired.
The table 22 is shown as having rubber cushions 34.
Rigid side cushions may be alternatively employed if desired. The removable obstacles can have peg members 12 like those on the illustrated removable playing pieces 10 shown in Figure 2. Other designs for the obstacles may however be employed. The various playing pieces including the obstacles can be made of any suitable and appropriate material such for example as wood, plywood, plastics materials and metals.
In Figure 1, the playing surface 4 can be located on the table 6 leaving the perimeter cushions untouched and available for the new game.
Some games playable with the apparatus of the present invention may require holes and/or fixings on the playing surface member, in which case a playing board will usually be used. The playing board may have a material covering such for example as baize. Other games playable with the apparatus of the present invention may only require diagrams and/or stick-on items, in which case a fabric playing surface member such for example as that shown in Figure 3 may be used.
The fabric member shown in Figure 3 is preferably baize but another material may be employed if desired. The ties 16 may be attached to each of six pockets 32.
The playing surface member may be provided in various sizes to suit the various sizes of existing tables such for example as existing billiards tables or pool tables.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiments of the invention described above and the specific Eighteens game have been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus a wide variety of games played with a wide variety of predetermined game designs may be provided. Examples of games other than golf-based games are those based on football, cricket, rugby, tennis, fishing, athletics, animals and the
Universe. The shape of the individual playing pieces may be varied from those shown in the drawings. The top frame portion 24 may be provided with holes 36 for receiving the ties 16. The removable playing piece 10 shown in Figure 2 can be an obstacle for hole 4. The removable playing piece 10 can have a random slope 38 and it can be of any suitable and appropriate design.
Usually the design will be of the same design as a positional mark 40 on the playing surface member 4. The support means, for example a table, can be circular, octagonal or of other shapes if desired. The predetermined design can be landscaped, mapped, drawn or stamped on the playing surface member.
