Abstract
A driving mirror that embodies the advantages of a plain mirror 1 with those of a convex mirror 3 to give a driver good distance and speed assessment with one observation coupled with a very wide angle of view. The combination mirror can also incorporate an angled area 2 for low level observation of the wheel to kerb relationship. <IMAGE>
Description
DRIVING MIRROR
This invention relates to a combination Driving Mirror.
Driving mirrors are well known features of vehicles which allow the driver to see in a rearward direction.
The plain mirror in common use, has a very narrow angle of view and the convex mirrors (part of a sphere) formally used in wing mirrors, have a wider angle of view but have the disadvantage of diminishing the image and therefore making the judgement of distance and speed difficult, which has resulted in the decline of this type in modern driving conditions such as motorway traffic.
According to the present invention, there is provided a combination driving mirror having a plain minor set transitionally tangential to a convex mirror formed from part of an elliptical cylinder. In the plain mirror section an optional angled area is provided for low level observation.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with specific reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Item 1 shows the plain mirror
Item 2 shows the optional angled area
Item 3 shows the convex
Referring to the drawing, the driving mirror comprises a plain mirror 1 with an optional angled area 2 (formed integrally or separate) set to give a low level view.
The plain mirror is set transitionally tangential to the convex mirror 3, which has various focal points on the horizontal axies only, to progressively increase the angle of view, the convex mirror being 'plain' (without curvature) on the vertical axis.
Claims (5)
1. A combination driving mirror having a plain mirror set transitionally tangential to a
convex mirror formed from part of an elliptical cylinder. In the plain mirror section
an optional angled area is provided for low level observation.
2. A combination driving mirror as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the plain mirror
provides within a narrow angle of view, a true mirrored reflection giving a driver
good rear-wards distance and speed assessment of other vehicles.
3. A combination driving mirror as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein means are
provided by a convex mirror formed from part of an elliptical cylinder, and therefore
having varying focal lengths is set so that the greatest focal length is adjacent to the
plain mirror and the shortest focal length is furthest from the plain mirror, and
thereby giving a true vertical image on the longitudinal axis of the cylinder to assist
in distance and speed assessment, and a diminished image only on the horizontal
cross axis of the cylinder. This orientation produces a view with the least diminished
horizontal image next to the plain mirror for maximising on the distance and speed
observation, whilst giving a much wider angle of view and the greatest diminished
horizontal image furthest from the plain mirror to maximise on the angle of the view
where the image is not used for any assessment other than being potentially
dangerous for manoeuvring.
4. A combination driving mirror as claimed in Claim 2 or Claim 3, wherein means are
provided by the provision of an optional angled mirror set to give a low level of
observation for viewing the wheel and kerb alignment.
5. A combination driving mirror substantially as described herein with reference to the
accompanying drawings.
